Eczema story

Hey all! I'm Courtney. I'm 15 and have had severe eczema over my entire body since I was born. There have been nights when I couldn't sleep because of the itching, hours where I sit there trying and trying to ignore the itch, only to finally give in and scratch until it bleeds.(Satisfying, yes, but the scabs stay for weeks.)

My parents and I tried - and still are trying - everything there is to try. Every cream, every home remedy, steroids, plastic wrap on my hands at night, rubbing or thumping instead of scratching. Eventually, we found tacrolymus(probably not spelled right), which really helped to lessen the severity of it, and I've also grown out of it a bit as I've gotten older. I'm not allowed to use tacrolymus or Elocon anymore, as the former may cause skin cancer and both are really strong.

My eczema is still worse than most, but it has receded from some areas(while becoming more severe in others) and I don't have so many frustrating moments.

As for living with it, my parents always work hard to make sure I don't come into contact with an irritant. I happen to have bad allergies to nature in general, so I take allergy medicine and try to stay out of the sun, as that irritates my skin. I try not to sit on carpet and all of my clothes are cotton. I can't touch animals. I keep my nails very short, and that helps a lot. If I go to a friend's house, I make sure they know what I can and can't do. I must admit, though... sometimes, it gets tiring to take so many precautions and to constantly watch what I touch, what I eat, what's around me, and that's when I throw it all to the winds and give my dog a bear hug.(Gotta take a shower immediately after, but what the heck?) After each shower, I have to put scent-less moisturizing lotion all over my body, to keep myself from drying out.

As for the kids out there who are dealing with this at school, I have some experiences and some tips to share. I can't even count the number of times someone has grabbed my hand and said, "Oh my god, your hands are so wrinkled!" or "Why do you have old-people hands?" or "Girl, you need some lotion!" I then patiently explain that I have eczema and that lotion would do no good.(And by the way, the questions do let up a bit as you get older and more people have been exposed to others with eczema, but they don't go away.) Also, you might want to mention to them first and foremost that it's not contagious - that always helps.

As for classes, my doctor always wrote a note for me for PE class, saying that if I got too hot, I could sit out. Most of my teachers were very nice about this and left it up to my judgment. As for embarrassment about my skin, yes, there was some, but I'm sort of a loner and I could brush that off. Actually, I'm mostly fond of my eczema. It's a part of me and it's something that's made me who I am. Because I don't want to be judged for my eczema, I am careful not to judge other people on their appearances.

Your overall tone makes you sound like a contented person Courtney. Hearing someone describe their pain with courage is refreshing. Unless a problem is over, most people won't even begin to talk about it.

Yep. That, and oatmeal... nothing ever helped.

i too am an eczema victim cournty i know how you feel but trust me it could be worse just never give up hope and try to stay clean try to find out if any one of your ancestors has asthma hay fever or eczema cuz then you would have inherited it if not just do your best and keep fighting that dreadful eczema it mght eventually go away!!

Hey Courtney! I'm 17 (almost 18) and I've had eczema since I was four...So I understand what you're going through.

It actually all started when I joined horse riding, and my mum noticed my scratching, but it was only tiny bits of scratching. Then I went on holiday to Butlins, and my mum noticed I was very badly rubbing my feet together (I must have been about 5) and I was covered in tiny little bumps all over my feet.

When we got home my mum took me to my doctor and she told us that it was eczema that I had, and that's when it all started.

It then spread all over my body until there came a point where i was covered in eczema from head to toe. I was still five and my mum even got me one of them bed suits that button from the back. To this day we still dont know how i managed it, but i got out of it, and scratched myself to pieces.

My hair used to be all the way down my back, and it was lovely, and there came a time when i had to get it all cut short because it kept falling out with all the scratching and with it being soaked in cream.

I missed out on alot of school when i was little, and even had to attend in banadages, and when everyone wore socks i had to wear tights. P.E was very embarrassing too, as we had to wear a tshirt and shorts, and i still had to do it. I cant really remember if i got any comments from my other classmates because i was in primary school, but i remember they all made me a huge card signed by them all whenever i went into hospital.

Then i was put on Cyclosporin, which wasnt usually used to treat eczema, but because i was so bad, i was put onto it, and i was the second child in Northern Ireland that was put onto it for eczema.

I think the nurses dreaded seeing me because i had to get blood taken every monday for about 6 months, and because i was so terrified of needles, i used to scream the hospital down and it took my mum and about 4 other nurses to hold me down to be able to get the blood from me, lol.

I was then taken off of the Cyclosporin, and through the next 6 months it started to gradually clear up, to a point where i was able to control it, which i could never have been able to do before, and i ended up only having it on the backs of my knees and the palms of my hands.

Then in October 2007 it started to flare up again, i think it was down to alot of stress, and about a month ago it resulted to me being back in hospital. I got cream and moisturisor all over me 4 times a day, and with the medication and having baths every morning when i woke up, i was out within the week, and ive never seen my eczema so good, even when i was able to control it. it was all down to routine really.

At home im not able to do that routine because i have work, and now my eczema has all flared up again, especially on my arms and neck, as there are days (most days) where i want to tear at them, and days that i do.

I also recently found them little bumps (that i was telling you about that my mum found on my feet on holiday) on the palm of one of my hands, a hand that hasnt had eczema on it for years, so i was very scared of it coming back, and instead spread to the back of my hand where ive scratched and is sore now.

I agree miskris95...i think its all to do with staying clean too. Because i have work i dont get to have them baths in the morning that i was having in hospital, so its probably down to that really, so keeping yourself clean will most likely help too :)

hi i use to have eczema i did every thing to stop it mine wasen't that bad but my friend she has it bad i try to tell he to stop scratching she will scratch untill it bleeds she picks her scabs and she is disclooded out of her family because it i try to tell her that lotion dosent heip she dosent belive me,alot of poeple call her emo.
