Gene protects adults abused as children from depression
“But when these tragic events do occur, studies like this one ultimately can help us learn how we might be able to better intervene against the pathology that often follows.”
Some forms of a gene that controls the body's response to stress hormones appear to protect adults who were abused in childhood from depression, psychiatrists have found. via EurekAlert!

I don't see any truth to this article. It's more mental health psycho-babble BS in my opinion.

Huam Spirit, than support your disagreement by explaining why you don't aggree with it. There are reasons why some adults have been able to establish effective lives after having experienced childhood abuse in comparason to other adults who experience depression after similar childhood experiences. Here in the UK, people who are sexually abused are treated with absolute contempt. Many of them have found that their social work/medical records are tampered with. Many of them never get access to the justice system to prosecute the people who abused them.
What abuse victims REALLY need is for the person who abused them to be prosecuted, found guilty and punished. That's when the hurt and resentment can finally begin to heal. Sadly, all to often that is exactly what does not happen. I am extremely sceptical of this research. Human beings are not just a load of old chemicals and electrical impulses. We also have hearts and souls, these things cannot be measured and weighed, praise God! These smart alec scientists are just after a nice little earner. |

I don't think you have the education you claim based on your spelling and sentence structure. I think you are "black PR" invading the forum. |

Thanks for sharing Zoompad. 1. Social work and medical records should never be tampered with. That alone is a disgrace and a crime. Anyone guilty of this should be punished and sent straight to jail. I've had only one supervisor in the past who tried telling me how to write my clinical notes. After I asked them if they would like to explain their reasoning to the state licensing board, they backed off and never tried that again. I'm not real fimiliar with what goes on in the United Kingdom, but here in the US, both the law enforcement and courts try to punish the guilty parties. It's a sad case that many in society often treat the sexually abused badly. But, with education it has become less and less here in the US. 2. The healing process has to take effect immediately for the abused victim and that only happen with the help of therapy and supportive family/friends. 3. I couldn't make any better statement here as Zoompad had made this an excellant point already! 4. In truth research scientists don't get rich from from their research projects. They have to attain research grants/funding to fianance their research. In most cases this is where the problem lies and it's not a good effect on the whole of society. Cheers Zoompad |

Well Human Spirit, you're entitled to your opinion. Cheers |
I would have thought that in the UK you would have been on the front line to defend the children. I am suprised to find this is not true. I agree that the SOBs must be proscuted and that their victims must get the help they need. I am always very sceptiable of these so called mental illnesses. While I do agree that there are many that are real I am just not sure about these new ones. |

It's hard today to know what is true and what is false. Here is a good web site for learning more about health: http://www.medhelp.org/ Cheers |
