What problem was your husband being treated for? I take Wellbutrin for depression. Taking it has helped more than any of the other anti-depressants I've taken but I still spend a majority of my days just waiting for the day I can die and be out of here. Now my doctor is recommending the addition of Abilify. Since I've only seen it used for schizophrenia or bi-polar disorder, I wonder if it will be a help at all for me. I do have mood swings, but it usually ranges from normal to depressed/suicidal. I don't get any manic episodes and am not psychotic.
Abilify plus an antidepressant for mood disorders

I hear what everyone is saying, and all points are valid to an extent. Every human being is different. Every brain and individual Brain chemistry is different.
Some meds work, some do not. Find out what works for you, whatever it is and it is very important with Bipolar to stay on track with it. See your Dr. on a regular basis, exercise, get 8 hours of sleep, eat well, try not to smoke herb or drink. The main problem I have and most Bipolar people I know have is staying on the medication and working with the Dr. It is a long process for most of us. Only 23% of bipolar people work with their Dr. to find the correct meds and work with the illness. Most Bipolar people are in denial, deny having it, will not accept it and refuse to take meds. Many people are Bipolar and do not know it. It is very common to want to stop it all, which as some of you know can put you in the Hospital. Holistic medication is another option. My experience is that it has not worked for me. Abilify , a low dose works for me. I also have ADD. I take Desoxsyn for that. It works better than any ADD medication I have tried. I would like to try a non stimulant ADD med.in the future. The world is very stressful as someone mention above, the world is crazy. Well I think it would have been more stressful and crazier running around with Dinosaurs and trying to stay alive every day…lol we really have it ez this day and age. Different humans have different stress levels. I hope this helped someone. I worked in a Psych Hospital as a Tech for 14 years and I now own my own computer repair Company (5th year ) thanks to my spiritual guider, my family, wife, my Psychiatrist my therapist/friend and medication. I almost left out my most important helpful tool. Meditation and prayer. Repeating a mantra like,“give me wisdom and strength “to deal with things. That has helped me the most and I am not a religious person. Meditation and prayer has been a key player and continues to be in my life. Peace Doug |

I've suffered from treatment resistant depression for about 4 years. I have tried and have been on every conceivable drug and have even had electro convulsive therapy. Major depression, paranoia, (What people are saying about me etc) I have an outstanding new psychiatrist. After a few months he took me off one of my meds (Geodon) and put me on 10 mgs of Abilify. Within days I felt a noticeable difference and for the first time in 4 years I actually am enjoying life and people. I may go up to 15 mg of abilify as I can feel the depression creeping around in my background. The drug is expensive even with health insurance $ 130 a month. But for me a small price to pay for finally feeling happy again. I'll be happy to talk with anyone about my experience and help you in any way I can. I have been a tough depression case I will tell you that.

Robert, your post is so comforting. My son is currently in a hospital for medication stabilization following a suicide attempt 2 weeks ago. My son was a happy child and early teen, but some biological change took place a 2-3 years ago, and slowly made itself more and more visible -- apathy, difficulty concentrating in class, lack of motivation, social withdrawal, no smiles. What began as dysthymia became moderate unipolar depression. He is now 19, and in the last year has been on holistic treatment, Wellbutrin alone, Wellbutrin and a tryciclic. It wasn't working and he simply got tired of all the effort and no result. He was diagnosed as treatment resistent the week before he attempted to take his life.
He just began the Abilify yesterday as an inpatient, and I came to this site searching for encouraging words. I saw you were treatment resistant for so long, and that Abilify worked for you --I feel so much hope now. Thank you. And my very best wishes for your continued high spirits.

Question.. My husband has been on Abilify 20MG 2x a day and just recently was but on Wellbutrin XL 150mG. He is a zombie. He falls asleep while you are talking and seems like he is just lifeless. Has anyone else see this with these 2 meds? He is only 34 years old and is just exsiting and not living if that makes any sense. Its like he is stoned or something and I know he is only taking what is prescribed. Please anyone else ever seen this.

What dosages of each med is he taking. I'm considering adding Wellbutrin to my abilify. |

Started Abilify last week and am using 4 mg. It helped quiet the rapid cycling thoughts I used to try and process before arising. I never could resolve the catch 22 type thinking until
abilify quieted them. Now I want to tackle the paranoid illusions which still haunt me albeit much lessened now with Abilify. |

I am 17,been in sports last 3 yrs but now I have stopped, I am hearing voices and feel everyone hears my thoughts. Sometimes I am not sure if I am speaking loudly or if my thoughts are being projected. My parents took me to see a Dr who put me on Lexapro 10 mg and now after 3 weeks has added 10 mg abilify. I seem a little better but my thoughts are not clear and and can not handle being in school.

My daughter also at about two yrs new there was something right. Now we are about to enter middle school. So I pray this works. |

DON'T DO IT!!!! My 8 year old son was on Abilify for 2 1/2 years. It made him hallucinate, and he ended up in the hospital with a severe ulcer!!
This is NOT a drug for children, unless you are quite desperate.. He went through withdrawels..we had to wean him off under doctor supervision. When he ended up in the Emergency room with severe stomach pains, the nurse asked,"WHY is he on Abilify"? His father, my husband passed away and his behavior problems started then..moving, his Dad and 2 Grandmas dying...a lot of trauma on us. I went to the health food store, he is on good supplements, like a different child now, Thank GOD!!!! I will never ever ever put my child on any drugs. We also took him to a great counselor. Behavior modification works..I had to cut back work to part-time to spend more time with him and take him to all his appointments. Not easy financially, but I can scrimp on myself, do my own nails, etc!! lol.. But, he is doing GREAT!!! He had severe stomach pains, etc... PLEASE READ AND LOOK UP THE SIDE EFFECTS!!! I IGNORED THEM AND MY SON ALMOST DIED. Please do not let what happened to us..this is a harmful drug, unless you have no other choice. Bless you all... |

I"m 31 and i too had a incredible weight gain on abilify and lamictal. I have had depression for 15 years and was recently diagnosed as bipolar by a hyper doctor. I am sure that i am unipolar depression and that the meds are responsible for the 50lbs i gained in 5 months. now i am mostly depressed about my weight . docs have said eat less and exercise. i need a second opinion.

My step-daughter, too is on Abilify. She has gained so much weight..
Exercise will help you feel much better inside and out. It helps you feel better, happier, too. Find an exercise that you enjoy and stick with it. Also, eating late at night will make you gain weight. Try not to eat after 7pm. Good luck. I know many people do need and benefit from Abilify and other medication. I wish everyone the best. My son is happier and healthier OFF all the medication. He got very sick on the Abilify. It took quite awhile to wean him off...now he is much better. |

My husband was very manic, they placed him on Depokate to begin with, then Seroquel. All he did was sleep. I think they really need to go through a long period of sleep to come back into reality. After several months of this his meds were changed to Lamictal and Abilify....he really started coming around and became his normal self. |

I take Wellbutrin and Abilify, and am coming off Zyprexa and Ambien at night. So far, so good. I hate having to take anything at all, but they tell me I am bipolar with deprssion, so I guess I'll be on this forever. That's enough to cause me to be depressed. I trust in the Lord Jesus Christ to help me out of this mess. May God be with us all in our times of trouble, in mind and in spirit.

I have a 12 year old son that has asthma and bad allergies and since 2006 he has had a very bad anger problem. I took him to his family doctor and talked to them about my concerns and they thought it would be good for my son to see a counciler. He saw her for a year and was very good when he was home after seeing her but then the next day he would be so violent to his little sisters. I didn't want him to be on meds other than what he has to take for his asthma. I feel I have tried everything. He is now 12 and is very active he weighs 120 and is as tall as me. when he gets mad it is very scary1 I started taking him to a psycatrist and he tried him on Resperdal but that made my son more angry and violent so now he wants me to try abilify and I'm very scared because of the side affects and also because he takes abuterol and singulair for his asthma and I worry it might interfere with his asthma meds. I don't know if I should just give up on even trying him on this med or see what it does. I just don't want him to grow up and be violent.

I totally agree I work in a foster home as a helper and the first thing she does is take them to have a doctor to prescribe drugs-Believe me they were fairly normal when they arrive but end up growling and having meltdowns and sent off to mental lock-ups -It is horrible -and even my own children if they aren't completely complacent in school the teachers demanded drug control. How sad is this! |

wow i reacted really differently than most...i've tried almost everything and was hoping abilify would help me, but it made me so restless and achy, i literally couldnt sit down or stay still for longer than 20 seconds because my body would hurt and ache so much...which immediately went away right after i stopped taking it. Did anyone else have this problem with abilify? also... I need some advice on combining meds, I am taking Emsam (MAOI patch) for Major depressive disorder, and it works well for me. But i still cant function well because i also have borderline personality disorder and have a tendency to get manic. Most people recommend lamictal but that made me worse too. My doc just prescribed me Provigil, anyone have any experience on it?

I take albuterol & advair in combination with abilify, & I never had any breathing problems or respiratory issues with the combination of meds. I've tried many different medications for depression and mood disorders & i've experienced side effects but none of them concerning my asthma. but do remember that everyone reacts differently to meds. If your son is trying a new drug you should monitor him as much as possible, especially since he is very young. Medication isnt easy, i know...it takes time, patience, effort, and money to find the right med & the right dose. or it may not be the answer for you, in which you may want to look into therapy, or acupunture , or holistic remedies. hope i helped a little, good luck with everything |

Abilify worked at first for me, but then i ran out of it, and it no longer worked well. It made me have suicidal thoughts. And it caused uncontrolable muscle twitching, and jerking that won't go away even being off the drug. Its subsiding alittle now being off a week. But i am going back on to treat bipolar.
