I recently saw a commercial asking for people who have taken Accutane and then gotten Ulcerative Colitis to contact them. Apparently there is a connection. I called the number to the law firm and am currently gathering information, such as proof that I started Accutane(March 96) and when diagnosed with Colitis(Nov 98). Has anyone been through this process?

No I haven't just been diagnosed, with Colitis still waiting for biopsy. Since they found a polyp and twisted colon that it's causing this colitis to be even worse then it is.
This thing has taken my life over... hope you find the answer you are looking for.
Good luck to you.
I will be back to see, what others have to say.

Jake,

I live in the UK and I'm trying to get the ball rolling to claim against this drug for Ulcerative Colitis. I had two courses, one in '99/00 and again in '04, some months after the second course I was diagnosed with total Ulcerative Colitis, 5 years later and I have only just got the bowel movements under control. The joint pain, lethargy and depression lives on though. I recently went for an eye test and found out this drug has destroyed my colour vision.

I'd be most grateful if you or anyone else reading this has claimed/is claiming and has had success or can offer any advice on claiming to please contact me. I'll be checking this post fairly frequently.

I have no answer to help you with, I have just been put on new medication called Asacol 400mg 4 tablets twice a day and am sicker then I have ever been. So far I have no answers at all, I have major stomach pain, cramping, spasm, etc. It's making my life missurable I hate everything about this Colitis, it has taken over my life. I eat once a day if that, eat imodium like it's a candy, and am in pain 24/7. Doctor said this new med. should help it made it worse for me,...

I will check in from time to time and see if anyone has any answers, as for you Paul I wish you the best.

Immodium never helped me what so ever with colitis. Asacol stopped all the symptoms but I was prescribed 2 tablets every 8 hours. Maybe you need to ask the doctor about taking it every 8 hours. If I missed a dose I was in trouble.
I was transitioned to Lialda after a year and only have to take it every 12 hours which is more convenient. It is slow release.

I am hungry don't get me wrong but I have learned not to eat, only because when I do, price is to hight and then am stuck at home.

Life really hard, with this since I have colon spasms and on top of colitis I have diverticilosis too.

Hope somebody can help me soon!

I lost quite a bit of weight until the colitis was under control. Was also afraid to eat. I had 3 attacks of diverticulitis in the first 2 years along with the diagnosis of colitis. Lialda is being clinically tested by Shire as a treatment for warding off second attacks of diverticulitis so it may be helping me avoid any more infections. My gastro doc and internist both decided to test me for vitamin d deficiency and I was quite low despite taking a name brand multivitamin. Since I have been on prescription vitamin d supplement I have had no antibiotics at all for 13 months now. It stopped the recurrent infections.
My gastro doc also gave me an antispasmodic. It didnt make any difference for me but that might help you. When the colon is raw from the colitis you are more prone to other things I have noticed. I have a doctor who is really good at treating colitis. I have been symptom free for about 9 months- I can forget about the disease as long as I take the Lialda on schedule. He also has me on probiotics permanently. I was still flaring about once a month on 6 pills a day of Asacol so he added a suppository and that stopped it. After a year I was able to discontinue the suppository with no ill effects.

i have had uc for 15 years but it has been controlable to a degree for most of that time with Asacol 400mg x 3 twice a day and i have taken asacol suppositories 500mg x 1 twice a day. when getting flairups prednisolone steroid tablets starting at20mg and slowly reduce over a couple of weeks, but the main thing i have found, that is a MUST, is taking ALL vitamin and mineral, cod liver oil and aloevera tablets.e.t.c. basicaly we have to realise that this condition stops digestion of food properly and absorbing all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals that the body needs to keep performing.Living in the uk i have found that medical help is limited because nhs is free and certain medicines are given protity for presciption due to medical research company sponsors for governmental spendings. So always research as much as you can so you are aware of certain medicines side effects because certain tablets can CAUSE confusion to such a state that suicidal thoughts become out of your control.Good luck to all finding what works for you because like finger prints, nervous systems, blood, chemical balances and biology are all UNIQUE!

I took Accutane for acne when I was 16 and upon turning 20 I developed Ulcerative Colitis. I went down fast, from 165 lbs to 135 lbs in 3 months. Had to take 100 mg of Cortisol Steriods per day just to keep in control.

My colon was so damaged that I had to have J-Pouch surgery to remove it before my 21st birthday. Less that one year! That has been over 17 years ago, and the surgery gave me my life back. Surgery is a scary prospect, but the symptoms described sound horrible. Please discuss with you Doctor.
