I have used this Grandmother’s cure for years and it helps to reduce the severity and some times it actually stops the development of the cold sore.

When I feel a cold sore coming on, twitching burning sensation in my lip, a immediately apply 90% alcohol to the area for at list five minutes using a cotton batting soak in alcohol and pressed against the lip. The alcohol seems to penetrate the skin and kills the virus. I follow this with an application of yogurt. I smear the yogurt on my lip and let it sit there until it dries. Best done at home in the evening. This seems to stop the further development of the cold sore.

Cold sores are both painful and embarrassing. They often strike at inopportune moments like weddings, final exam week, or before the high school prom. While the direct cause is unknown stress, sun, direct contact or even smoking Sheesha (also known as hukka or a water pipe) may spread or trigger an outbreak. Treating the virus from both the inside and outside may yield the most success.

It is believed that cold sores may result from an imbalance between the amino acids arginine and lysine. Arginine may help the virus grow and can be found in foods like grains and nuts. Unlike arginine, lysine inhibits the cold sore virus and may be taken as a preventative measure. Lysine can also shorten healing time.

Fortunately, there are also several new prescriptions available for cold sore relief in the United States. One of the most effective is sold under the name "Valrex." You take this anti-viral drug (www.valtrex.com ) after that first tingling feeling or sign of pain.

Taking supplements with the live cultures found in yogurt reportedly works as an effective antibiotic. Dannon (yogurt brand) sells a yogurt drink rich in these live cultures. The drink tastes great and should deliver a more potent punch than just consuming yogurt alone.

Add zinc and vitamin c supplements to boost your immune system.

Topical solutions may prevent the virus from spreading to additional cells while limiting pain.

Wash your hands often to prevent further spread. It is possible to spread cold sores to additional sites on your lips and skin. Buy a new toothbrush to avoid re-infecting yourself.

The best cure is TEA TREE OIL; to numb and dry the cold sore and then apply LIPACTIN, an effective cold sore gel you can get at any drug store. It works and gets rid of the sore in 24 hours!!! For this to work effectively, both must be applied as soon as you feel that tingling sensation.

I once was able to stop a cold sore in its tracks at the first sign of symptoms by applying yogurt to the site of blisters and pain. It really worked. This has been several years ago, but when I think about it, I do eat more yogurt now and don't seem to get them anymore. The reason I'm on this site is to look for a cure for my little girl. She's in a wedding on Saturday, and, of course, she seems to be coming down with them. I've promptly applied yogurt AND Abreva. We'll see what happens...

I'm not a doctor but I'm a sufferer and so that makes me as expert as anyone about cold sores. Here goes my advice. I don't think it will work for everyone but who knows.

The first step is prevention. The main triggers, for me, are overwhelmingly changes in the weather (read: heat waves) and stress.

While I can't play God with the weather, I can manage my stress. I've best accomplished this by reguarly exercising and by making enough free time to go out with friends. Sound weird? Interestingly, whenever I get a cold sore, I can almost always confess to myself that I've been behind on my exercise regimen or my social life. Stress causes cold sores; kill the cause to avoid the effect.

However, given you're already experiencing a cold sore, and I'm sorry to hear you are, you can take some small measures.

First you must moisturize by consistently applying Carmex or another lip balm. I prefer Carmex because it cools down the sore, but I beleive this quality is palliative not medicinal.

Second, I swear by a six times per day treatment. you should apply the following directly to the affected area: Red wine and probiotic yogurt. Ideally you would let the wine and yogurt be "absorbed" into the skin, for only a few minutes.
You would also add the aforementioned products into your daily regimen: two small glasses of red wine and two small cups of yogurt, per deum.

Of course, please be careful that you've sufficiently washed your hands after handling cold sores. I'm not saying you have to freak out like most of these Internet hypochondriacs, but a thorough, clinical wash really is necessary.

It sounds quacky but there is actual scientific evidence to support my system. Abreva, etc. are antiviral medications designed by drug companies. While I have little doubt these medications are effective, we already have several alternatives right in our kitchen. It's well known that red-wine contains myriad antiviral qualities; probiotic yogurt contains the microbes necessary to hold back infections. Any surprise these would be effective against an everyday virus?

If you're in the middle of an outbreak, this treatment will only knock a day or two off at best. However, most cold sore sufferers will attest that cutting off this one day would be a considerable boost to their quality of life.

The real trick is to apply the treatment before it ever gets out of hand. When you feel a tingle on your lip, APPLY THE TREATMENT and ADD TO THE DIET. Also EXERCISE and CALL A FUNNY FRIEND (i.e. monitor the stress levelage and chill it down).

I hope this is helpful. Don't freak. The cold sore will be gone before you know it. The real key to dealing with cold sores is to accept that yes, once you have one it's hard to make it go away, but that makes focusing on palliative treatments all the more worth doing. Find what works for you and enjoy your days!

Hi, The remedy that I use to get rid of my cold sores is: is to rinse my mouth wit warm salty water, but I think it only counts if the sore is inside your mouth not on your lip.

I've found a good website that has all the most popular products around on it - apparently the Lysine one is the most effective!!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
I have a little different question though.
My cold sore started early on Monday morning. I always used to get it only on lower left side of my lip. This time, it is really bad and I have got it on right and left side both.
Since I am still travelling. I am in transit right now. I can't do any of those treatments. I am on day two. I started taking L-Lysine (1000 mg) 3 times a day, and also applied carmex that I had with me.
But my question is a little embarassing. Hope someone can help. I am going to go to the doctor to get a check up done anyways. But for now, I am so so scared that can't wait till go to a doctor.
Late at night on Sunday (around in between 10 pm - 3 am), I had oral sex with my BF. But I hadn't felt the tingling sensation then.
He had kissed me and gone down on me.
What are the chances that we both would have spread it to our genital areas.
Thanks a lot

Awww... I feel so so guilty that I went down on him.
But that nite, I didn't feel anything. Felt it only when I woke up in the morning.
I already told my BF to get himself checked up.
I feel so so guilty. Gosh, had I known or felt even a little; i would have never done it.
But what use cryin over spilt milk.

Thanks Fred anyways. Appreciate your feedback.

OK this is more of a rant then anything else. It started on Tuesday with small blisters on my upper lip and i successfully was able to dry it out by thursday and then today I wake up with my whole lip swollen and with tiny tiny lil bumps. I used the tea tree oil and it seemed to start to work and well.. not my lip is swollen all over again. I will try the yogurt the rest of the night BUT can I just say AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. This year has sucked majorly cause I keep getting them every 2 months. STRESS STRESS STRESS is all I can say.

My trick is to dry it out using peroxide or developer, i find developer works faster and also stops it from growing almost completely. Then once its dried out I either wash it with hot sea salt water, or use Lipactin gel...

cold sores are SOOO annoying and embarassing! hope this may have helped someone out there.

I've been doing a lot of reading on treatments. This is what I find that works best for me...
1)applying Abreva
2)popping the blister
3)taking Tynenol or Aspirin to keep lip swelling down
4)Then trying to dry it out with nail polish remover AND/OR Hand Sanitizer
Repeating #1 & #4 freqently

Daily Horoscope for December 28

Scorpio

The thought of the sales is almost too good to resist today, and you'll jump at the chance to see what's on offer. Even better if you can snap up some bargains at the same time. It's certainly a good day for investing your money carefully, but make sure you aren't more seduced by the reduction in the cost of something than in the item itself. Are you certain that you want to buy it?
