Study finds Butte high in severe lung ailments

Full story: Chico Enterprise-Record

A state health report this week showed Butte County is well above California's hospitalization rate for lung ailments called "chronic obstructive pulmonary disease." Michael Kassis, a research analyst and leader of the team that wrote the report, said he couldn't explain why Butte ranks high in this area.

Damn! You beat me to it!
Before everybody starts making that claim, let's remember there is empirical data supporting such an assertion.

FYI my hubby has asthma (yes we have a woodstove) but he is more choked up in the spring when everything is blooming then in the winters when were keeping warm. Trips to the ER happen during spring time. So if that says anything. It's been like that for years. He is allergic to alot of the blooming trees we have here, I'm not saying to cut the tree's down, cause they are awesome.

Live next door to someone who uses a woodstove or fireplace. Neighbors on both sides of me use them, it's horrible all winter long. We have worse air here then in the Bay Area!

Weed, plant weed. It smells really good when it is growing and if you smoke it, the smoke has zero effect on the lungs. Unlike beer which is all bad and causes many problems, weed smoke and fireplace smoke are two entirely different things.

One important thing that was not addressed in the news release of the study was average age in the county.

If you look at the Paradise/Magalia Area it is a community much made up of older retired people. Which means poor health.

A correction for age might make a big difference. The "surpentine" rock outcropping might make a difference as "surpentine" is abestos.

I have Restrictive Lung Disease and Asthma. But, the cause of those problems was an occupational risk from the 2008 lighting complex and a non-functioning cab air system on a machine I was operating.

Fireplaces may be a contributor. However, smoking, unpaved roads, wildland fires, and occupational exposures play a much greater risk. Not to mention Agricultural Operations.

Disregarding OSHA workplace air quality requirements is big in Butte Co. THe timber industry and the cutting of certain trees has been proven to produce compounds that cause lung disease. Furthermore, the burned trees that are later harvested have far worse compounds (compoents of combustion) than a live tree.

So, what is the answer. Check the numbers for age corrections. Limit occupational exposures. Stop smoking. And understand natural exposures such as fine forestry "duff", disturbing "sepertine" rock formations wuring extreamly dry periods. Leaf blowers also put both organic and inorganic compounds in the air.

With few pulmonologists in the county it might be great for the paper to do would be to interview the pulmonologists and them have them suggest the causes they see on a daily basis.

This is good. However the hysterical progressive people need something REAL Simple to hang their hats on. Hey! How 'bout fireplaces? There's a simple fix. And you can easily identify the culprits. No thinking needed. Just start shouting. Other half-wits will agree and start shouting too.

GOOD NEWS?! From the article: "It reported some good news: that overall in California, hospitalizations declined by 6.8 percent during the period studied." Sure it declined you Moron! During that time period I was paying $900. a month medical insurance (no dental or vision). I pretty much burned through the value of my house paying the medical pigs for little or nothing. Just Maybe, some folks didn't have the MONEY for insurance and skipped "hospitalizations".

Empirical data shows that, without a doubt, obese people here in butte county are a result of the decline of the family fireplace. People just aren't chopping wood like they used to.

Err what is the point of advocating putting people on CMSP ? It pays so little no doctors will take it and hardly covers and medications at all.
You can only keep people out of hospitals and get them long term care from primary care doctors when all people can have access to such doctors. medi-Cal and CMSP simply don't get you that access.

Now here is some good stuff! Not the "fuzzy science" (ie; threat of cutting funds) that has been used to ban wood burning here. As is always the case with self-proclaimed progressives, they pick the easiest target. Taxpayers. If they were to go after some of the industries mentioned, they would be litigated to no end. So they will just come after regular citizens. And then try to convince us it's for our own good. Like they know...

Let me tell you how it will be,
There’s one for you, nineteen for me,
‘Cause I’m the Taxman,
Yeah, I’m the Taxman.
Should five per cent appear too small,
Be thankful I don’t take it all.
‘Cos I’m the Taxman,
Yeah, I’m the Taxman.

(If you drive a car ), I’ll tax the street,
(If you try to sit ), I’ll tax your seat,
(If you get too cold ), I’ll tax the heat,
(If you take a walk ), I’ll tax your feet.
Taxman.

‘Cause I’m the Taxman,
Yeah, I’m the Taxman.
Don’t ask me what I want it for
(Taxman! Mister Wilson!)
If you don’t want to pay some more
(Taxman! Mister Heath!),
‘Cause I’m the Taxman,
Yeah, I’m the Taxman.

Now my advice for those who die,(Taxman!)
Declare the pennies on your eyes,(Taxman!)
‘Cause I’m the Taxman,
Yeah, I’m the Taxman.
And you’re working for no-one but me,
(Taxman).

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Aries

Take care today Aries, because the emotional landscape in your neighborhood will be full of pitfalls during the coming fortnight, as it has been since the Solar Eclipse on May 20. The more convinced you are that you're right, the harder it will be to navigate your way around forthcoming events. If you feel resentful of someone, perhaps a neighbor or sibling, you need to get your feelings out in the open, rather than burying them deeper, where they'll fester and lead to more problems in the long run.
