Why should the drug companies buy in?
There is a fortune to be made with the "symptom relievers" already on the shelves.

Exactly! The pharmaceuticals are interested in relieving symptoms instead of curing illness/disease. There is much more to be made in slowing down an illness with continued treatment.

What I've never understood is why an academic research program can't create a clinical drug? Don't they have the expertise and the labs?

Just think of the productivity gains if we could eliminate the common cold. You would think all the non-Big-Pharma corporations would be screaming at the government to pursue this research.

Gophers fan is right...Big Pharma has never had the public good in mind (unless forced to or paid to).

If no one is going to back a drug to leverage the research results, why is this research being done to begin with? Who is funding the research?

Until we've mapped the genomes of thousands of other viruses there is a great risk of unintended consequences.

What they don't have is money. Grants are a dead end these days. Money from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is damn near impossible to get. I have several out-of-work researcher friends who have switched careers because academic money isn't there.

You have George W. Bush to thank for that one.
