The main question concerning fireworks is whether people are absolutely free to do what they want, even if that hurts somebody else, and whether the substances of fireworks are toxic or not. Just because some unhealthy, hazardous, obnoxious, or otherwise undesirable or environmentally / socially / economically destructive practices exist somewhere in the world doesn't mean that all or any other such practices should continue just because they have been. Slavery, sufferage (voting for women), racism anyone?
Some point to automobiles (cars, trucks, buses, aircraft, etc.), to Kilauea and other sources. These are the same people that in a manner without regard for the consequences of unconscious living such as driving an automobile often, living 20+ miles from a place of frequent work or education, smoking, consumption of animal based foods (meat), wasteful use of energy and resources in general.
Most will challenge some or all of the above, but it's a fact that the choices of individuals to engage in such behaviors makes it more difficult for everyone to live free of physical / emotional health challenges. The results of animal consumption are known to cause the most extreme environmental and health problems of all because it involves transportation, packaging, and often long term freezing of the flesh on a scale unlike anything else, worldwide - all very energy intensive and interdependent on many levels.
All of the above cause consequences that affect the lives of us all, yet those that practice these behaviors claim personal freedom while others that choose to respect themselves and others are forced to endure the consequences of these unfortunate choices.
Please consider what I have stated above before replying in hostility thinking somebody is stepping on "your" rights. How many people's and animals basic rights to clean air, water, food, general health and right to life are you stepping on by clinging to your ways?

I live right across the street from Universal Studios in Orlando, FL. I have fought this cause with them and their fireworks displays for the past five years, to no avail. Only the City has jurisdiction in these matters, and we who reside across the way are not within the city limits. The state has virtually NO power to impose on the City Fire Marshall, who is backed by her Chief to seemingly allow Universal to do whatever they want for the sake of money (taxes). I have even tried to change the laws at the state level, but hard to do when your state representative (Steven Precourt) won't even return your calls!! Our polititians are pathetic.

THANK YOU for writing articles such as this, for the potential good of all. And, please know there are people who believe in your cause and champion your attempts to clean up our air and protect the weak from harm. You are the one who is patriotic, not the ignorant masses who just want their "fix" come the end of the day.

Well, GL, it's not going to change in Hawaii...some traditions are deeply rooted in culture, and banning is not the right answer.

Hey I'm open to compromise. In fact there's always compromise, but if you want to outright ban it, forget it. Move out of the state in my honest opinion.
