I have a can right here, plus we used one last week.
Husband has been sick to his stomach the last week or so.
Didn't know why, maybe a virus or this damn
recall, don't know.
DON'T EAT THE CHILI EITHER JUST IN CASE

We just opened up a can today!

I ate some of it, but I feel ok so far.

We just missed the *sell by date* recall, so I guess were ok.

Would cooking on high for a while destroy any spores?

Rusty, I would throw it away as the warnings say.
You could kill any bacteria but the toxins (their by-product) would still be there and that is what makes you ill.

I'm glad they DID tell us. Next time, try to make sure it doesn't happen. Tell me, don't you have a lab to make sure this doesn't happen.
Please tell me you aren't buying this stuff from IRAN and just putting your label on it.

I am holding a can of Castleberry Hot Dog Chili Sauce in my hand right now. We had it for dinner last night. Should I be worried. The UPC matches exactly. The date on bottom of can is April 23, 2009. Should I be tested? Now I am scared.

Kathy MacDonald, call your local emergency room and ask them what to do. Don't mess around with botulism.

Sophie,
Didn't several people die last year from eating lettuce???? Vegetarians are not immune. They are full of pesticides if not organic.

Chili sauce is so easy to make and tastes better. Why buy something with meat in it in a can. Who knows whats in there.

Just got the email from the FDA Alerts:

Symptoms of botulism poisoning can begin from 6 hours to 2 weeks after eating food that contains the toxin. Symptoms may include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, and muscle weakness that moves progressively down the body, affecting the shoulders first then descending to the upper arms, lower arms, thighs, calves, etc. Botulism poisoning can also cause paralysis of the breathing muscles which can result in death unless assistance with breathing (mechanical ventilation) is provided.

Individuals who show these symptoms and who may have recently eaten Castleberry’s Hot Dog Chili Sauce, Austex Hot Dog Chili Sauce, or Kroger Hot Dog Chili Sauce should seek immediate medical attention.

NO Rusty. High temps (boiling the food) will denature the bot. toxins, but will NOT kill the Bot. spores. The old sying is; "When in doubt throw it out".

Sophie: C. Bot. is in everything including vegetables. It's the prep.the heath deparments are concerned with. It appears the food company didn't kill the critter when canning it.

Kathy McDonald C. Bot toxins can kill you. Testing is expensive. When in doubt, throw it out out.

Or better yet, hotdogs. I attended Ohio State in the early 70's and part of their program, if you were in the School of Agriculture, was to work in the dairy barn or one of several other areas that actually produced food for the students. I worked in the meat packing "whatever" area. We made some of the hotdogs that were sold in the school cafeteria's. The stuff the students slipped into the "dog batter" as we called it was very nasty and gross. It took me years to be able to eat hotdogs again. I don't think about it much now because it really was gross. Funny at the time though. I wonder if OSU still does that?
