This is just like the idiots who totally disregard the signs on Fire Island and feed the Deer anyway. They see cars as a souce of food because people pull up and start throwing stuff out the windows to them. Humans will be the death of this planet because we are so not the most intelligent species here by any stretch of the imagination.

What does this have to do with the botulism in these ducks?

Maybe if you had actually read the article maybe you would have some clue as to what the poster was referring to in his/her post. Thank you for your useless contribution to our discussion.

If all you can do is criticize than your comment is quite useless as well. What have you contributed to the conversation and as I asked before, what does feeding the birds have to do with botulism?

Relax, take a deep breath and release it slowly. Now that your feeling better go down by the lake and feed the ducks some bread...... If that doesn't relax you take a ride over to F.I. and feed the deer...

Excuse me, it is becoming more and more evident that you are an uneducated dolt whose only motivation for posting is to stir up trouble. Sir, it is evident by your questions that your literacy skills are lacking because you failed to extract the important information in the article (or you simply did not read it).

I may be an uneducated dolt, but I still don't see what you've contributed to this conversation.

Wow, everyone calm down.

This disease outbreak may be exacerbated by having old bread lying around in the water. The bread rots, and the birds eat it, getting a belly full of toxic bacteria. The dead bodies of the birds become petri dishes for the botulism to spread to other birds.

In addition, the action of feeding the birds gathers them all together, where they are more likely to share food, and exchange fluids- spreading the disease further.

This disease is a bird illness, transferred from bird to bird, but it is generally the fault of humans when there is an outbreak.

I don't know this lake, but I've seen the same sorts of gatherings of waterbirds at Lake Ronkonkoma, Southaven Park, and at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge. People love feeding the birds, but it can literally kill them.

It may be adorable for your grandchild or nephew to hand-feed a goose, or some other wildlife- but if you want a pet, get a pet. Leave the wildlife alone, or there won't be any.

The food given to the birds can create bacteria that leads to botulism, especially in high tempratures (short heat wave at the end of July)

I blame all the new residents moving into the village from Nassau County. Please, stay in Massapequa and Merrick or just move out of state. Stop tearing down the quaint historic neighborhoods and replacing them with brick faced "luxury" McMansions.

As a former resident of the village of Babylon I couldn't agree more! I lived in the village for 25 years and finally left because I just couldn't take the insanity going on with tearing the old homes down. Babylon is losing it's small town feel. The village really made a grave mistake by not enacting a architecural review board for residential properties and to protect the historic homes and neighborhoods years ago. What a shame. There are so many hideous italiano style palaces going up, they have no business being in Babylon.

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Taurus

Get involved in financial transactions at your peril under today's Lunar Eclipse, because certain people will use them as a stick to beat you with. For instance, if you ask someone to lend you money they'll either make you feel guilty about it or dredge up all sorts of past instances when their trust was betrayed. You would also be well advised to avoid any show of possessiveness or jealousy, even if you feel it, unless you truly don't care about the disastrous outcome.
