Full story: Palm Beach Post

Question: My dog has just been diagnosed with bone cancer. I am told by my family veterinarian that this is a very aggressive type of cancer in dogs.

Mike that was a very cruel comment to make. Obviously you are not a pet lover.
Roboblogger I really sympathize as today I found out my Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever also has bone cancer. The specialists wants to amputate his hind leg and do chemo. He might live 3 months with only the amputation and 1 year if he amputates and gets chemo. Monty is 9 years old and I don't want to put him through all that. I intend to keep him as happy as possible until the pain gets too bad then put him to sleep.
What did you decide to do with your dog.

Mike, thanks for your UNkind thoughts.
Sadly to say 4 weeks after Monty was diagnosed with bone cancer he had to be put down as the pain was so bad and it had spread. It was a very sad decision but we didn't want him to suffer just so we could keep him a few more days.
Thanks to all for your kind words. Mike you need to get a life.

I am contemplating today when I will have to put my St. Bernard down due to bone cancer. The tumor in his leg got bigger over night. He is still walking and eating but I know he has to be uncomfortable. It is such a hard decision. I have had him and his sister since they were puppies and they are 10 now. It is painful for myself and to think that his sister will be alone now!!

Meg, I am sorry for your loss! I know it is the hardest thing to have to deal with and so shocking!! I don't know how I am going to deal with this!!

Mike... what goes around comes around! You will reach for kindness and there will be none for you!!

We had to put Monty to sleep in early May. He only lived a few weeks after being diagnosed and the pain got to bad so we put him down. A very hard decision as he was a wonderful pet. How is your lab doing?

Marta I feel for you as I know what you are going through but believe me do not wait until he is in so much pain as it will just be harder on you. The cancer moves very quickly. Please let me know how your St. Bernard is doing and my deepest sympathy if he is no longer with you.

I have a golden retriever named Gus who we just put down yesterday, after he was diagnosed at the end of August. None of us wanted to say goodbye but he could hardly walk and his leg had swollen. He could still eat and would do some of his funny tricks as long as he didnt have to get up. We think it spread to his lungs because he started breathing harder and coughing more day by day. It was the hardest decision we ever made but we couldnt put him through that pain. It definately was agressive..it appeared suddenly and he got worse day by day. It was the only decision we could have made without causing further suffering by amputating or chemo (which btw, makes them really sick too even though it eliminates pain).

i have 2 jack russels, brothers from the same litter. Unfortunatly one has been diagnosed with bone cancer in his leg, we have decided to have him put to sleep even though it is so very hard. He is 13 now and had a great life being able to share it all with his brother ( best mate ) and a lot of love from us. He has not been ill long but it came on so quick and he is in pain, we feel its only fair to let him go when he still has alot of dignity. We just hope his brother does not pine too much. He will be sadly missed by all. love ya billy xx
