I have had a copper iud for over a year now, and have gained over 20 pounds, the first period after getting it fitted was horrific. Now I suffer with cramps, two days of very very heavy flow and a awful smell whilst on period, my partner has also commented on this and I have ruined underwear due to what I can identify as copper been released from me, does anybody else have this ?? Thanks

i'm a 34yr old mother of 2. i had my babes back to back and got the paraguard a month after my 2nd was born, 3 years ago. i have never had a problem maintaining a healthy weight and within the first month post partum after my first baby was only a few lbs away from my pre-preggo weight. i went on the pill (don't remember which one now) and within a few months gained 40lbs. i stopped the pill and before my DH and i figured out another reliable form of BC, we got pregnant again. so my 2nd pregnancy started with me already being overweight, but healthy eating and light exercise kept me from gaining too much too fast and i sort of shifted my weight from my body to my babe. i delivered at very close to the same weight as with my 1st baby. i started to lose weight after the delivery and got the IUD 1 month post partum. 3 years later, with a very healthy diet and a naturally active life (being a mom of two small kids without a tv!) i'm a solid 50lbs overweight.
aside from my weight, i have other symptoms. my body seems to be trying to flush it out. i have an almost constant discharge unlike my normal fluids. i was 30 when i had my first child and had become pretty well acquainted with my body. i can accept change due to birth, but what i've been experiencing shouldn't be. and i have seen my dr about it. anyway, i also believe my sex drive has been negatively affected. i have seen a nutritionist and am told i have a dysfunctional adrenal gland. we're working on correcting that, but it could very well have been caused by my body "fighting off" a foreign object for 3 years. it leaves me with less energy during the day, trouble sleeping well at night, weight gain and high blood pressure (from all the excess fluid i'm carrying around). i have accepted most of these side affects because it is the lesser of all other evils, so to speak. i am far too sensitive for hormonal BC and have a latex allergy. but now that DH and i have decided our family is just the right size, he's getting a vasx and i'm having my IUD removed. i will report back in a few months to let you know how things go. i have searched through this thread for updates and have found a few, but would like to see more. so please come back and let us know how you're doing!!

Please wait...
Hi Laura - Your story sounds a lot like mine. Just a couple of remarks for you... - I did have abnormal discharge when I had the IUD. That completely resolved after removal. - I had gained about 10 pounds after the IUD was inserted, and I lost those 10 pounds after removal, with no change in diet or exercise. - You are the mom of two small kids, so keep in mind it is totally normal to want/need more energy and more of a sex drive during this time of life. So many moms have this problem, whether or not they have an IUD. Don't let it get you down. It's hard to be a mom! Try a good B-Vitamin complex to help. - I found myself snacking a LOT when my kids switched to solid food. I would eat a lot of their leftovers. Watch yourself around the kids' food, as those calories add up fast. - My hubby had a vasectomy and my kids got a little older and I feel back to normal these days. My IUD absolutely caused me to gain weight, but my kids wore me out! It gets so much easier as the kids get older, I promise.
Good luck!

Just read all these posts and wanted to add that I too have experienced weight gain, hair loss and hip pain after having the Paraquard Iud inserted. I attributed all this to turning 40 until my sister, who also had the Iud inserted and was experiencing hair loss, told me to look it up on the internet because everyone is saying it's caused by the Pargurad IUD. I was shocked I never thought the Iud could be the cause of all this. I thought I was just getting old. I am also very upset that my doctor didn't tell these symptoms could be possible and that many other people on the chats have said their doctors don't believe the paraguard causes these symptoms. Well I am going to have it removed! I just don't know what to do for non-hormonal birth control! Any ideas?

It's NOT a coincidence when SEVERAL women have shared the SAME kind of stories. I myself have never had trouble losing weight or keeping a steady weight until I started the Paragard. I have started dieting and exercising EVERY DAY! Nothing has changed..I keep gaining weight and it's not muscle either. I feel myself jiggle, I have never had a jiggle to my body before. I was upset when I read your post because you do NOT know that the Paragard isn't the cause for these women's weight gain so stop acting like it.

Just wanted to let you all no there is light at the end of the tunnel :) I have had my IUD for over ten years I have had most of the symptoms like everyone else, the most noticeable was the weight I gained 140lb I thought it was my age, my health, my will power, I just kept getting bigger. I came across this forum and took on board everyone's symptoms and experiences. It was like a light had been switched on and suddenly things made sense. After thinking about what to do I eventually had it removed in august 2011, against the advice of my doctor. I wanted to give it a while to get it out of my system . So new year, new start I have been losing weight steadily and feel like a new me. I have a long way to go but I have lost 16lb up to now and I just wanted to tell anyone who is in any doubt about these IUD's please just listen to your body, you no it better than any doctor, I wish I had listened to mine. At least now I have and things are looking up. Thank you for every comment you have all made it has helped me so much :) x

I can not believe what Im reading. I've had the paragaurd copper t for about six years and thought everything that was changing was normal and with age. Lets see theres the weight gain of 75 pounds, the acne, bloating, heavier periods, and severe cramping every other month. Im 31 years old and I just thought these changes were normal. I think we need to contact someone to inform them that obviously "COPPER" is causing a lot more than the normal side effects. I think I will get my tubes tied instead!

Youjanyce wrote: This is so weird. I have totally gained weight since I got the paragaurd inserted. The whole reason I got it is because there were no hormones. I had my son in January and I lost 15 pounds. About 3 months after his birth I got the iud put in. I steadily gained the weight back. Since then I have been working out for about 9 months and still no change. I had changed my diet and everything. True there is no hormones in the iud but it makes you think after reading all these post's, maybe there is s slight chance something else is going on. I am getting mine removed next week. hi, just wanted to know how was the removal? You did it? I am thinking to do the same even I just had on Jan 18....

I have had the copper IUD for 6 years. It just dawned on me that this has to be the source of my weight gain. I am now 100 pounds heavier than before I had it placed. I have tried everything possible to lose weight. I am a vegan, I exercise, there is just no explanation for this weight gain. The doctors have tested me for everything under the sun. I am having the IUD removed in two weeks.

Ask your health care professional and check out your caloric intake!! I don't think they have to check their menus, they are checking their scale after the insertion and it doens't seem to be a "coincidence" that someone gains weight after something foreign gets incerted into their body. Ladies! Go see your doctor. Abnormal weight gain is NOT NORMAL. Hence the word "abnormal". I lost all my baby weight after my second child. Kept it off and was still losing 4 months after baby was born. I got the paragard put in and have gained 14 lbs in 6 months. NOT NORMAL. I am getting it taken out ASAP. I'm tired of the rising scale even after all my dietary changes.

How ignorant to tell these women to "check their menus". Just because it doesn't have hormones, does not mean that the paragard is not the reason for their unexplainable weigh gain. Nice reply to Gayles dumb post.

So, I, like everyone else have been reading this site in absolute amazement... mixed with both HORROR and HAPPINESS. I had mine Paragard put in about 3 months ago and am almost up to a 10-lb weight gain. I have always needed to watch my weight and I've mostly always been able to keep it under control. UNTIL NOW. I eat extremely healthy and am a marathoner, so I work out all the time. However, I don't know where this weight came from and I cannot get it off! I have also been extremely tired during my excercises which has never been the case before. I am so uncomfortable in my clothes since they barely fit and I look like I am about 4 months pregnant in my lower belly! After reading all of the stories from you brave ladies, I was almost sure that the IUD was the problem. Then, I saw Amber's post about a twitchy eye?!?!?! Oh my gosh, I nearly lost my mind... I am having the same problem and am certain this IUD is no good for me. Sorry, I don't really have anything interesting to say... just so grateful for all of you!
