Okay guys. For all of you wondering about the insertion process. And if it is worth it.
I had mine inserted yesterday. I worked myself up for nothing. I have had no children and I can't handle the hormones in pills to me and my doc decided this would be the best for me.
I had to sign my release form and then insertion began. My md said that it may feel like cramps. This is wrong it doesn't necessarily feel like a cramp, more like the feeling of how a shot feels except it is on the inside. It feels like a sharp pain. This only lasted for a minute though, once the IUD was in he cut the strings, he left them long enough so that they would wrap around the cervix instead of poking straight out. This will decrease the chance of my BF from feeling them during sex. He told me to continue taking my birth control for another 2 weeks, even though they say it is immediatly effective he didn't want to take any chances.
I had minor cramping and no bleeding, I still have a little cramping and I have a pad on hand just incase. But I was probably pretty lucky that I took it so well.
All in all I really worried way too much. The pain was intense but nothing I havn't been through before. It wasn't as much as the pain it was the kind of pain, a weird feeling. For those of you who are debating whether to get one, look at all the options first, I basically had no choice it was either this or nothing. And I can't put my body through any more miscarriages for a while so this was it for me.
If you have any questions, just ask and I will respond.
how is ur iud going as it has been 4 years????

Hello all, I find these comments very comforting. I had my copper iud put in 4 months ago and have noticed a change in me ever since I had it put in. I had my son 9 months ago and we have a 4 year old daughter so we are not sure if we are going to have any more children or not. I cannot have any hormonal birth control as I have MAJOR problems emotionally when I take it and I am allergic to latex so write condoms off the list. Anyway I thought paragaurd was the answer. Now I am having hot flashes, heart palpitations, major fatigue, anxiety attacks, depressed, don't really want to eat and a slew more. The only new thing is this iud, so I think the sucker has to come out. It really sucks because I paid $800 out of pocket for the thing. But it is not worth my sanity. It probably does work well for a lot of people but I am not one of them. I never even considered the fact that I could become copper toxic. I have sooo many symptoms it's scary. Good luck all. I hope it works for you. Every woman's body reacts differently. Just be informed.
Hi Natalie, I had the copper IUD fitted on July 26th 2011 (around 6 weeks ago). It was quite traumatic getting it fitted. Very painful and I had to have an injection to relax my uterus to allow it to be fitted. To cut a long story short, I've always been a kinda 'nervy' person and have a history of panic attacks though I could more or less keep a lid on them. Since having the copper IUD fitted though they have gotten a whole lot worse. I have been off work since two days after having IUD fitted as I was panicking all the time and felt I couldn't cope. I was given antidepressants for anxiety/depression by my Doctor to though still waiting for them to work.

Anyway I'm going to have the IUD removed as soon as I can as, whether they are responsible for the increase in my anxiety or not, the idea is firmly planted in my head and I have no choice now but to get it removed.

Hi Melissa, I got the IUD taken out on Tuesday and it was a very simple, quick procedure. I felt a slight scratch then it was out. I feel relieved I have it out now. I just couldn't handle having it inside me.

I've had the copper t iud since 2005 never had any complaints thought it was awesome. Over the years I've had a yeast infection n bacteria vaginosis besides I was ok. But this year has been a battle first I was getting my period twice a month for the first four month of the year then a couple of months later I started having mood swings anxiety, depression that I'm still battling with panic attacks headaches( really bad) weird pain I have gotten test done my doc says everything is fine. But I'm still scared I don't feel like myself my period was spotting last month. I started to read up on copper toxicity and I'm wondering if that could be the answer. I forgot to mention that ova the years I have gotten a rash on my hand. But this whole situation is just too weird. I'm really the opposite of what I used to be. I think I'm going to get this removed I feel like I'm being poisioned. Also went to see an endocronologist (waiting for results).also my gyn said he doesn't see strings so I might have to go in the OR I'm just fed up n want Me back!

Just wondering why the IUD is so expensive to get? I didn't get mine in the US, so didn't have this issue. I called my doctor to have it removed, and they are checking my insurance to see what the charge is going to be, because they are not sure the insurance will cover it.
Great question, Betty! My insurance did not pay for the IUD ($550 out of pocket) and it DID NOT PAY FOR REMOVAL ($150 out of pocket). So, I advise ANYONE considering the IUD to ask for the price up front on not only insertion, but removal. Also, you need to ask if insurance will cover removal if the IUD becomes embedded in the uterus, thus requiring a surgical procedure and sedation. Ask if your health insurance covers treatment for any complications, too. It can be VERY expensive if things go wrong and you are not covered.

I too hear a ton of horror stories but it really does depend on your body. I had a copper iud inserted 5 years ago after i had my daughter and i didn't even know the doctor put it in until he said we are all done! I just today had it removed and it was a breeze. I read too many bad stories and was all scared to get it out from the pain. It went awesome. Periods were heavier but not too many cramps. I would reccomend taking your multivitamin just in case so you dont become anemic from heavy periods. But either than that my experience was awesome! good luck :)

Hi - I had my second child in June this year and 6 wks after I got the copper IUD (350 euros) insertion was fine just a little blood and cramping but nothing major. After a few days my legs began aching and troubling me at night. To wake in the morning and get out of bed the aches were there. Like an old woman getting out of bed. I'm 35, in good health and not fat. It was like my legs were not working as they should. The aches continued and I just got used to them. I noticed my legs were gaining weight from below my buttock and down to my calf with my knees looking puffy. Like water retention only it wasn't retention. I had that whilst pregnant and this is different. Additionally I became anxious, losing confidence and became nervous around people. I wanted to cry and curl up in bed and not leave my bed. What the hell was wrong with me. The only change was the insertion of the iud. I researched this and found info on copper toxicity. But nothing is mentioned about leg pain. Today I got the iud removed (80 euros). Now I wait to see if my health improves. I am going to post back to update. We'll see if the coil caused my ailments. Also I bled each month for 6 days of which 3 days I could not manage the blood loss with superplus tampons it was so heavy. Pmt was awful and I've no sex drive.

My sister's iud perforated her uterus and attached to her bowel. She became pregnant and had to have emergency surgery to remove iud. the pregnancy was terminated. I told my nurse practitioner this story when she tried to sell me on the "virtues" of an iud, and she just rolled her eyes and dismissed the story as "so rare". Oh yeah?... I'm thinking, not really.

Had my iud fitted this evening, It was painful but only for a few seconds and I felt a bit shaky afterwards. No bleeding at the moment but expect I will get some later. Cramping pains are unpleasant but expected. Fingers crossed.
The negative statements here are insane. I have had a copper iud for 4 years, nothing abnormal about it. Heavier bleeding and I infection ( antibiotics cured). I lived it. Insertion and removal, I was a little shaky, thats all. Best of luck to everyone here.

The negative comments aren't necessarily insane - they just reflect a different experience than the one you've had.

I have had a copper IUD for more than two years now. I originally got it partially as emergency contraception and hadn't thought of the significance of what was actually going to happen. The insertion itself was awful, by far the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. I fainted on the table and they had to send a taxi to take me home. I remember collapsing onto my boyfriend and just sobbing for hours. Cramps for several days afterwards too.

Having said that, things did eventually settle down. At first I got painful cramps about a week before my period began and for about 3-4 days into it. Cramping days gradually decreased and now I only cramp for the first two days of my period (though it is still very painful). My periods are also very heavy (can soak through super plus tampons in only 4 hours) and large clots are normal. They only tend to last 3-4 days max now though and then the rest of the month I can completely forget the IUD is in there. Plus I had quite heavy periods before the IUD anyway, so others will probably find them more manageable.

Overall it's been hit and miss. For only 2 painful days a month now, being able to relax over contraception makes the IUD worth it to me. But I would never do it again.

I had the copper Nova T380 inserted back in the middle of September last year as I have a history of cysts and slightly elevated BP so needed a non-hormonal form of BC. Insertion was great, a little discomfort and some cramps afterwards but that was it. I also started college as well in the September and returned to work in November.

I started suffering from a thrush like infection prior to the arrival of my AF but would disappear as soon as AF started, fatigue, eczema on my hands, feeling nauseous, joint aches and general lack of get up and go and I went to dr's in January because I was depressed and anxious and now suffering from insomnia!

I'm not sure what prompted me to look at the link but something occurred to me that perhaps all these symptoms were a little coincidental as I didn't have any of this prior to starting college or having the coil put in - even with running around after a toddler and a baby! The more I've looked into it the more I realise that I believe it is my coil that is causing these symptoms through copper toxicity and estrogen dominance to the point of I can predict the symptoms as they cyclic - depression and brain fogginess before or around ovulation with thrust like symptoms building up towards my AF. I am going to contact my dr to get it removed as I can't deal with it any longer and I need to see it it helps with the symptoms. I shall keep you updated!

YES! I had my copper iud fitted june 2008 and gradually started losing hair. i didnt attribute it to the iud until i started looking at forums on the net. My hair has thinned so much you can literally see through it to my scalp. i had it taken out a few weeks ago and im just hoping and wishing that my hair returns to its normal thickness.
If theres anyone out there that has had their iud taken out and experienced problems with hair please let me know if i went back to normal.

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Taurus

Get involved in financial transactions at your peril under today's Lunar Eclipse, because certain people will use them as a stick to beat you with. For instance, if you ask someone to lend you money they'll either make you feel guilty about it or dredge up all sorts of past instances when their trust was betrayed. You would also be well advised to avoid any show of possessiveness or jealousy, even if you feel it, unless you truly don't care about the disastrous outcome.
