I have had the Mirena for 7+ years-2+ years into my 2nd Mirena.
No periods-slight spotting once per month. No cramping. No PMS. No weight gain.
Took ibuprofen before the 2 insertions and one removal to lessen the pain (I have a slighlty tipped uterus so somewhat difficult insertion)-only hurt for a day.
I had uterine fibroids and bled and had huge clots-had them removed 10 years ago.
LOVE not bleeding for the last nearly 8 years!!!
Sorry so many have had problems.

Old thread, but I wanted to pitch in my 2-cents. I'm twenty, monogamous, have never been pregnant, and got the Mirena IUD. I think I had the best-case scenario, but I wanted to share, just to let everyone know it can happen:
- I had very little pain during insertion - Less than a day of cramping afterward - I spotted very lightly for three weeks - I check about once/week, & it's still there - My partner says he *can* feel the strings, but they've been left at a long-enough length so they don't poke him, and he says it's a small sacrifice considering we don't have to use condoms. - On that note, sex drive totally unaffected, and comfortably "do it" on... most nights - No weight gain, but I'm pretty active - No depression, less mood swings than w/period - Skin is *beautiful*!
So far, no problems, so I think I'm good to go. I would hope to have a first child around 25-26, so the 5-year effectiveness period is perfect. I do miss the "birth control pill" boobs, though. I've gone back down to my regular A-cup since then

Hi, I had a mirena put in 2 days ago. I don't need it for contraception as I was steralised 18 years ago, I am now 47. I suffer from heavy periods and severe cramping, more like labour pains due to fibroids. The pain would start 10 days before my period so basically I felt like crap two weeks in every month. So if this device works, it will be well worth it, rather than having my womb removed. I am hoping that this device will stop my periods and pain all together. So far, no spotting or pain. Will keep you all posted. cheers

I had the Mirena put in 2 days ago for heavy, crampy periods and so far, so good. I have a history of having a few periods a year that lasts for months and it is taking over my life. So when I heard that Mirena might work, I jumped rt in on it. The insert hurt for a few seconds and them I was crampy for a few minutes afterwards. Since I was already bleeding heavily before the insert I was expecting to really be bleeding a lot more but that first day it slowed down. Then yesterday I stopped bleeding and today I am back to spotting lightly. Thats it, no pain or cramping!! I'm hoping this works. If not, I will have it taken out.

I have had mine in for a little more than 4 months. I had been worried at the beginning -- all the horror stories I read online. I had no trouble with the insertion - just cramping for a few days. I had my first period on it 2 weeks later and it lasted for 10 days and was hideous. Then I spotted for a week and started right up again. This went on for nearly 3 months. I kept thinking I should get it removed, but each period would get a bit better so I stuck it out. And now, I'm happy with it so far. My period had been starting 1 week after the last one had ended, and then it gradually went to starting 2 weeks after the last one (on 21 days) and now I'm on Day 23 and nothing. I had some minor cramping on Day 21 and thought for sure it would start, but nothing happened. I am hopeful that it either won't start at all or will start like a normal one. The strings are short and sometimes hard to find, but otherwise, I have had no other problems. Feeling crappy for 3 months will be worth it if things continue to go better. I just wanted to offer my take.:)

I had my Mirena inserted in April 2010, 12 weeks after I had my daughter. I had spotting for like a day and haven't had a period ever since. I do have the occassional "monthly cramping" like I would if I were having a period and sometimes I do get a little annoyed and I tell my husband, "after #2 comes, someone is getting fixed b/c I'm not doing birth control anymore", but it's not irritating enough that I feel like I need to get it taken out. I was on the NuvaRing before we started trying for our daughter and we were able to get pregnant on the first try so it didn't mess up anything in that aspect. 6 weeks after delivery I went back on the NuvaRing but b/c of the issues I had during labor, etc. the NuvaRing kept falling out. I was bummed but life goes on so I started looking into other methods... I'm bad about remembering to take pills, I hate shots and condoms were not happening again so I looked into the Mirena and my OB had nothing but good things to say. Of all the women who she had get the Mirena, only 2 women weren't impressed.. That's a pretty good record if you ask me. Bottom line, it's not bad to get the mirena but I would try the NuvaRing first.. Painless, easier to check, only worry about it every 3 weeks... Its a win win. Hope this helps.

I had my mirena inserted a week ago. About 8 weeks after delivery of my son. I felt nothing for the insertion. And just have been lightly bleeding for a week and it's actually slowing down. So far it's been great I go in to have the strings shortened and the only thing I'm worried about is if my "partner" will be able to feel the strings? My doctor said to wait to insert anything duh has tampons and no sex. So idk how that's gonna go over yet. Has anyone not had problems with feeling o the strings?

I have the same boob thing, in fact every few months i get pregnancy symptoms such as SEVERELY painful breasts, tiredness, bloating in my lower abdomen. Other than that strange occurance every now and again, Mirena has been fine. I've had it in almost three years now. I am 22 and have been married almost three years. I never experiences any changes in weight or skin and i liked that. My moods are about the same as any birth control and my sex drive does seem to be a little less than normal, but it isn't completely gone.

I had the mirena inserted two weeks ago during my period. It hurt like bad cramps, the most painful part was when they measured my uterus.
I get cramps, so I couldn't tell if the cramps were from my period or the mirena. Now I feel perfectly fine and normal. Sex is fine. I must admit though, that I cannot find the strings? They have to be there, it was inserted two weeks ago:-) Anyone else have missing strings?

I had my Mirena placed one week ago today,(for severe bleeding leading to anemia). Within the past 4 days I have developed the following: -severe fatigue, it's an effort to move and I am an active person, -back pain, -legs achey and restless, -acne, oily hair and skin, -emotional- don't know whether to cry or "shoot" someone. I think I would rather have the wretched periods and take oral iron supplements along with the occasional Infed infusion than feel like this.
