Most of these comments are really accurate! I had my IUD inserted 6 months ago. I've never had children, always had a screwy period with heavy cramping and didn't know what to expect.
The doctor gave me pills to insert into my vagina to loosen the cervix. The night before the procedure and the morning of. They gave me mild cramps like I was on my period (strange feeling because I had just finished my period!)
Right after it was inserted, I felt ill. I fainted in the doctor's office at the reception desk (embarrassing!) and I had dizzying cramps to the extent that I couldn't drive myself home. The next few days were pretty painful too.(But not much worse than my previous periods..)
Until now, everything has been great. I got very little cramping during my periods, No spotting between periods, and verrry light periods (lightest periods of my life!)
Everything was awesome until last month....
I didn't get a period and I've been cramping every few days since. I don't know what is going on! I'm worried that it has moved and is not providing me with the contraception that I desire. If so, how do I know if I'm pregnant? Will the mirena provide false preg test results??
Any suggestions?

Hi all, I just want to let you know my story. I had the Mirena fitted 13 months ago to help Endometriosis. I have suffered for years with very heavy painful bleeding so when my doctor recommended this option to me, I was keen to try it. For the first few months I experienced some cramping (sometimes quite painful) but usually helped by taking a couple of Ibruprofens. I also experienced intermittent bleeding, sometimes heavy, sometimes not. I gained a bit of weight and my boobs grew by one cup size (woo hoo!) Eventually after about 6 months the cramps eased right off and my periods stopped. This was great and was just the result I was after for so long. HOWEVER.... recently I have been experiencing very severe pains, been off work for two weeks so far. I am unable to walk upright, I have pain passing urine and opening my bowels. I can even feel the gases passing through my digestive system! My tummy has swollen up and I sometimes feel like I'm "pushing" as if I were having another child. I have been to my doctor, who initially suspected a pelvic infection (as my strings were still in place). But the results of that test have now come back negative and I am going back tomorrow to request the removal of the Mirena. As brilliant as this device has been for my Endometrial growth, I cannot live with this pain. I thought I was dying last week and I have a very good pain threashold (2 C-sections, appendix and laprascopic surgery twice and three tattoos). My blood pressure has also been very high for over a week now due to the pain (180/120) so after weighing it all up, it has to go. I hope this post helps people experiencing the same problems or trying to decide whether to have one fitted xx

I got mirena put in about 4 months ago, hurt like hell, but had zero problems with it until now. My boyfriend and I had been apart and he is huge btw lol..now it kind of hurts. He didn't say he could feel it but it feels like maybe he moved it or something. I had cramps now, like all the time and when we have sex I can feel pressure. Is it possible for that to happen??

I don't mean to be too graphic so I'll keep it simple. I have paragard and I can't feel it at all except when I have sex and my legs go over my head, I get a pinching pain! I need to get this checked! And my husband feels the string but he said it doesn't hurt.

Hi, since we are on the topic of iud's. I have had one for a little over 5 years(cooper one). In october I started to spot in between periods, and then spotting went to a light period like bleeding. The dr treated a infection that I had, and that still didn't stop it. She put me on a birth control pill for 21 days to stop the bleeding, and it still didn't stop. She finally sent me in for a ultra sound, and she said everything was fine. But the iud was sitting low. She said she's not sure if it's been there the whole time, and doing it's job. Or if it slipped down there resently. I asked her if it could be causing the bleeding. She said, she's not sure. It could be the reason. That if it's bothering me, I can have it removed and a new one put in. I don't know if I want to put this in again. Has anyone else had a simular problem?

I'm considering Paragard and researching. I'm 17 and have Never been to a gyno, let alone took Birth Control. I am sexually active and using protection, but my boyfriends Penis is really large, I'm afraid he will feel it or move it. Can the people who's significant others who have felt it Shed some light on if size matters? Also, I'm afraid of when I have my period it will come out with the uterine lining. I'm honestly nervous and my mom is pushing for me to have Birth Control.

I got my IUD inserted yesterday. I had cramping right after insertion, but it was a little to my left side. I didn't bother to ask about it. I don't have harsh cramps at all. In fact, I feel great for the most part. Here and there I can still feel a little crampy to the left side of my pelvis. Is it normal to feel cramps more towards one side of your pelvis after insertion? Btw, I tried checking for my string earlier and couldn't feel it. I hope everything is okay because I feel fine.

i can actually feel mine now. i guess during my period and right after, it's easier to feel for it. plus after you are able to feel it once, it's so much easier to find it again. Plus my midwife did tell me that she purposely left my strings longer, about 2 inches, so that i can feel for it and it won't poke my significant other. instead the string will curve more upward. i find that to be true. when i check for my string, i do notice it doesn't hang straight down. the ends curve upward. he did feel it the first couple times, but now he doesn't anymore..and it's still the same length.

I had my jug put in today. I can feel the strings with my fingers just 2 cm up my vagina. If I have the strings cut short, how is it done? Does the Gynae need to remove it, cut then reinsert? I don't think I can do it all over again, those instruments made my stomach turn!!

I got an IUD inserted in march 2008. I have had the strings cut THREE TIMES and my ob/gyn says that if she cuts them any shorter the IUD will slip into my uterus. My husband concentrates more on the pain of the strings than on intercourse. should I just remove it?
I can also feel my iud strings, what happens when u have it trimmed? Is it removed, cut then reinserted? Or is it trimmed with the iud inside? Or do u get a new iud altogether?

I just got The para guard yesterday. I couldn't even go into work I had so much pain from the cramps.. I'm feeling a lot better today and I've had a bowel movement and it was fine. The whole thought of it freaks me out and I can definitely feel it in there. I'm sure that will go away within a week or so. I haven't had sex yet mostly because I want my body to accept it and I want the cramps to be gone.. But for ten years of protection I can deal with it!!

I'm so upset. I had a copper IUD inserted yesterday and tonight I felt it for the first time with my fingers and not only can I feel the strings but I can feel the end of it sticking out :(. So yes I'm guessing that means it has to be taken out. I'm so devastated. All that pain for nothing not to mention how much it's cost me with doctors appointments and the cost of the bloody thing.
