Im 20 & ive had the copper IUD since 4/10. The first week I did have cramping but it was takeAble to me. The first 6months my periods were irregular with slight cramping and normal flow. After that my period went back to normal(monthly) hardly any cramps and if I do have cramps they arent bad and still normal flow. My sex drive is normal as well. I couldnt be any happier bcuz it has no hormones and its been successful to me, its doing its job. I guess it just depends on every different women/body types but if u do decide to try it and like it, u will be satisfied.:-)

I have had the Copper IUD for almost a year until a couple of days ago when I removed it personally. Ever since I got it I had constant infection, cramps, mood swings, and my period was 10X worse. I hated it, it always felt like it was in wrong and i could always feel more than the strings when I checked to make sure it was still there. The doctor always said it was normal. But I don't find me being depressed so much more normal. Ever since I have removed it I have been happier, more active and not so tired in the mornings. My infection has seemed to go away too and by infection I mean a constant smell that was not normal. I'm much happier.

I am on Alesse (light) birth control pills which is great.. periods 3-4 days, NO bloating but now I have NO sex drive. I am only on the pill to protect from getting pregnant. I went to get my yearly today and my gyno said maybe I should think about a copper IUD. I would like to know if people's sex drive has returned back to normal since they are not on bcps anymore. . I have been on the copper iud paragaurd for 7 moths now and I am getting it taken out!!! My gyno told me I'd get heavier periods but it was terrible!!! I literally have had my period for 6 months straight! I get really bad cramping and I have to change my tampon all the time! I used Mirena before this and that was great but eventually I felt like it had too many hormones. I prefer the pill.

I have had my copper IUD for about a year now. At first I had extremely bad cramps (had to sit down at work, but lying on my stomach was best) but eventually they went away (maybe 4 months in?). My sex drive seems pretty normal. I took pills for years before this and not only did they affect my sex drive, they affected my mood in general. I was a nutcase. I haven't had weight gain, infections, or anything else serious since the cramps stopped (they were really bad but I could almost predict the day they'd start before I stopped having them). The only downside, as mentioned by some other ladies, is that although my regular period is lighter and shorter, I still have spotting for like a week and half afterwards. It's not a huge deal, doesn't affect my sex life much, it's just annoying to have to keep using feminine products for such a long period of time. Overall I'd recommend it. (Side note: I haven't had kids either. I'm 26. My understanding is it's fine for anyone who hasn't had kids just keep in mind they'll have to stretch your cervix and that hurts really bad... but it's like one appointment and a little pain for 5 years without kids!:))

I have had a Paraguard copper IUD for 7 years. I suggest waiting it out. Your period will get back to normal by next year, at least mine did.

Erica wrote: Has anyone liked the copper IUD? It seems that some of the side effects are the same as regular birth control. I became interested in it because it is hormone free. I haven't heard of anyone that liked it. So I wonder if it is worth a try. I had my copper iud for about two weeks. I love it aside from depo and the pills. It hurts when it is inserted but after I felt ok just cramps. I ran the next day. The first 4-5 days I bleed. My sex drive is great , but my boyfriend just told me he felt something so no I'm thinking my strings are to long , but overall I actually like it

Theresa wrote: Does any one out there realize that the way an IUD works is by not letting a fertilized egg attach to the uterine wall. You are unknowingly aborting your own children! Ask your doc or read the insert and find a natural way to monitor your gift of fertility. - actually, although this is a secondary defence provided by the copper iud, the primary defence is that the copper acts against sperm motility. Which means it's almost certain that there will not be a fertilised egg. Unless you have a problem with condoms or with mutual masturbation, it seems a fairly similar preventative measure. If you do have a problem with the onanistic waste of seed, I fail to see the point of the rhythm method as a form of more religiously sanctioned non-procreative sex.

It seems a shame to waste the days where you are most desiring one another by using this method. I understand it's comparatively effective, but the 'it's natural' argument falls a little bit flat in light of our bodies' design.

I have had the copper iud 6 years now. The cramps and bleeding are a little brutal at times, but it doesn't make you gain weight like the marina. I also love the fact I don't have to worry about taking a pill everyday. Good luck ladies with what ever you decide.

I have Paragard and I love it. I cramped a lil the night I got it but my doctor recommended I get it while on my period so it hard to say what the cramps were from. So far I've been lucky. No crazy cramps or bleeding in fact I feel like I don't have any birth control at all. It seems too good to be true.

I'm 21 and I got a Paraguard put in 2 weeks ago and so far so good. I decided to get an IUD because my mother had a good experience with it, plus I had been on birth control for 4 years and over time became more and more angry, depressed and suicidal. I didn't like who I had turned into so I decided to get off of hormones.
It was put in on the 5th day of my period, and I did bleed a little for less than a week afterwards, but it was mostly discharge. It cramped only the night after it was put it.
Since the main reason I started birth control was to help my acne (I was on Alesse, and then switched to Yasmin), having no hormones anymore did make me break out but my face is more or less back to normal. I still had breakouts on the pill anyway.
Sex-drive seems increased lately, but maybe that's not related to the IUD. Who knows. I lightly cramp once in a while, but it's more a temporary bloating feeling. Sometimes I feel like maybe I can feel my IUD in certain positions, but it isn't painful so I don't worry about it.
Can't report how periods are yet, but I may post back once I get mine in a little over a week. I never really had an issue with cramps anyway, maybe only 2 or 3 times a year, and it felt like the cramps I had after the IUD insertion. Also, my periods aren't that heavy anyway, so I don't think I'll have any problems. We'll see though.

Im getting the copper IUD next week, I'm a little nervous. I've had 3 children, I'm in my early twenties. I just want to read positive experiences. I appreciate everyone sharing. Everyone besides the psyco abortion lady. I heard it works well for younger women, who have had children. Any thoughts?

Please wait...
I had the paragard inserted in the end of November, 2011. Before the IUD, my periods were lighter and I rarely had cramps. Now, I have cramps and my period is about 1 day longer but not really heavier. The cramps and period are getting better, as my body is adjusting to the foreign object. I did notice that it's a little harder for me to lose weight; however, I have not gained weight. Prior to the IUD, I started to take a medication to treat something unrelated to the uterus/gynecology and it had decreased my libido. About 1- 2 months after getting the IUD (end of December, early January), I noticed an increase of sex drive. I've always had a higher than average sex drive but now, it's insatiable. Recently, I came up with the conclusion that it had to be the paragard because It is the only change in my body since the medication. I wake up thinking of sex. I go to sleep thinking of sex. It is difficult to deal with it because sometimes, people are talking to me and I daydream of sex. Aside constantly wanting to have sex, I have no problems with the paragard. Everyone's body is different. I say, try it out and see what happens.

I'm very interested in getting the Paragard Copper IUD because of some concerns with my current hormonal birth control (Depo injections). Due to a very strong family history of blood clots, heart attack, stroke and my own weight problem (which has been exacerbated by a 40+ pound weight gain since starting the injections just over a year ago) as well as a non-existent libido, I simply don't want hormonal BC anymore. I will also be beginning treatment with a medication called Lamotrigine; it is adversely affected by hormonal birth control (some people say the BC makes the lamotrigine less effective, while others say the lamotrigine makes the BC less effective). After doing some research I've found two caveats that may prevent me from being able to get the IUD so I wonder if other women have had these issues and how it was or wasn't resolved for them in terms of getting the IUD.(1) I have not had a child and know that the expulsion rate for a woman who hasn't given birth is about 7%, additionally (2) I have uterus didelphys, meaning I have two complete and independent uteri each with their own cervix and vaginal canal (one opening that splits into two "tunnels" via a septum). I found a case study in which a 17 year old woman (presumably who had not given birth before) with my condition had an IUD inserted successfully, one in each uterus, for the same reason of being treated with lamotrigine, but the study didn't offer any details as to how long it was successful or her quality of life in terms of cramps, bleeding, etc. My second thought/question for women who are both having awful, extended, heavy periods and those who are experiencing short, mild and light periods is which form of BC you were using prior to the IUD. On the Depo injections, I no longer have any period or spotting at all and wonder if perhaps that would carry over somewhat with the IUD- having short, light, mild periods. For those who were using a BC which didn't affect the flow or duration of your period, did you see the increase? Thanks so much!
