Question 1- if we change r mind an want to have a baby is it at all difficult? Question 2- I understand everyone's body is different an may reject it, but hearing all of the bloody horror stories is freaking me out.. Am I risking putting myself in a lot of pain an mess by getting this? Question 3- I live in CA any suggestions for good docs who have been using and inserting Thr IUD for awhile? Question 4- mood swings are another large concern of mine? Any input more or less? Thank you again for all of the posts it's really informed me an helped. But I'd love if someone could get back to me thank you, an good luck I totally forgot to answer 2 of your questions. Once you removed the IUD you can immediately start trying for a baby next ovulation. There is no waiting time. I am going to expect some bleeding again after removal but there is no affect on fertility. Something people don't realize is that the insertion of the device causes the body to release natural hormones...even though there are no hormones released from the IUD. Mood swings, breast sensitivity, weight gain, even slight lactation can occur until your body regulates. Can't recommend any doctors in your area, though, I'm sorry!

Kristen wrote: Hey Nicole or anyone else do you guys know if the IUD makes you gain weight?????????? Hi Kristen, I have the paraguard iud. Ive had it for 11 months. In that time I've LOST 35 pounds! Within the first 2 months of having it i lost 20 pounds! I find that I have more energy and work out a lot harder than I did when I was on the pill, I also eat less. I think the hormones in bc really messed with my natural body and now I feel and look better than I ever have. Good luck!

24 years old 2 children both delivered by c-section.
I got the copper IUD inserted yesterday, & I felt 2 cramps when she put it in. I haven't had much cramping and just a little spotting. Not even to where I need a panty liner. I have read so many different reviews so I am just waiting to see how my body handels it and I will keep everyone posted. Thanks for all the reviews I enjoyed reading them.

Hi,Erika
Yes, I have had the same issure, had my copper IUD fitted in April (2011) periods became heavy as discussed with nurse, so that was expected, have had no other discomfort apart from period pains when im due on. September came and I started spotting, started to worry, so have had every test going [blood, swab, smear and internal scan] to see what the problem was, test came back normal apart from my swab, confirmed I had an infection [course of antibiotics prescribed] seconf batch of swabs confirmed I Still had the infect [currently getting this sorted] scan showed my Copper IUD had slipped and twisted at an angle, tried to have it removed, and have never felt so much PAIN in my life!!!! Excruciating!!!! Doc confirmed I will need it surgically removed - under general. NOT happy, so to confirm, this has caused me nothing but stress and worry, was hoping to get along with it as hormonal contraception did not agree... Look to be having the op in 2 weeks time, so Will update!
Has any one else had any problems or drama's with theirs??
Thanks

I have had the copper IUD for almost a year now and I love it. It so great that I never notice or think about it. I had tried all the different types of hormonal birth controls but just couldn't deal with the side effects. I will admit, the IUD was pretty darn painful when they put it in, but the pain only lasted a few seconds. Following the insertion, I definitely had some crazy cramps. But with a heating pad and some IBprofin I was able to go back to work an hour afterwards. Although, I would not recommend working or other activities the same day if you can avoid it. Schedule the insertion on a day you can go home and relax. As far as intercourse goes, I waited a week or two. The first 3 or 4 months that I had the IUD were an adjustment for me. I spotted and bled more during my period. I also had more intense and a different type of cramps during my period than I was used to having. In addition, I felt "aware" of the IUD in my body. Like I could kind of feel it when I sat in certain positions. However, this did not last very long at all. Every month that passed got better and better to the point now, I feel like everything is totally normal. My periods are back to how they were before the IUD. In fact, in the last two or three months, my cramps have been less intense and last less time then they used to be. I would say this is the best form of birth control out there, at least FOR ME. Everyone's body is different so not everyone will have the same reactions.

Hi there, I've had my copper IUD in for a little over two months now. Getting it inserted wasn't really painful, I just felt a lot of pressure and then it was over. Afterwards, I was a little dazed and crampy so I would definitely suggest having someone drive you home when the procedure is over. My first period was very heavy, and I wasn't entirely sure how to deal with it, because I've never bled that much before. I would suggest getting your iron checked a few cycles after your IUD insertion, because apparently my iron is very low, which makes sense because I am losing so much more blood every month now. I've started taking slow release iron pills though, and am now feeling much better. My second period was heavy, but not nearly as bad as the first so that was definitely a relief. Other than that, I've definitely noticed spotting between periods, particularly during/after sex. Between my period and spotting after sex I have been bleeding for the last month or so, so I hope that my body is just getting used to the IUD, and that this will stop over time. Overall I'm so happy I don't have to worry about taking a pill, or hormones, and would recommend the IUD for women who don't already have an extremely heavy period. Hope this helps!

Those all sound like completely normal symptoms that come with the IUD,especially in the first few days, but if you are really unsure, you might want to go check with your doctor.

I'm feeling the same thing! I got mine two days ago.. Well I actually had the Mirena for 2 years and went through anxiety and weight gain so I switched for the non hormonal path.. Try and be patient.. I'm taking Ibprophen daily for now and trying to stretch. But other than the pain and bleeding I feel amazing! If you are unsure deff call your dr!

Hi i have used every contraceptive out there, then i decided to go with the copper iud because i was gaining major weight and the pills always made me feel sick, then the doctor said since i already have a child she would recommend it because there was a chance i might not get pregnant again. I was really fertile before and i was really afraid to get preggers, I really regret taking the iud, it hurt like hell when i had my period, then my partner would always complain about the string hitting his penis, and he said it didnt feel the same, i started to dread having sex cause it hurt so bad, so i only had it in for 6 months and i couldnt take it anymore i had the doctor remove it, and i havent been on any birthcontrol at all its been 4 years now and i cant get pregnant no matter how hard i try. I kind of regret it i wish i would have educated my self a little more on that iud.The doctor even told me if i was absolutely sure i wanted cause i might not get pregnant again, cause she said basically i was their hamster. So just some advice stay away from it! It ruins ur womb, or ur insides. For a fertile person like me and in 4 years nothing! Wow thats all i can say ;) Everyones body is different but just be very careful oh yeah and i gained major weight more weight than i was on the pill, and sometimes i even look pregnant but im not. I was in great shape before and now not so great after the iud. I am also 30 years old if that helps

Hello there! I must say its been refreshing to read a mix of reviews and also to see lots of positive outcomes with the Copper IUD. I got my Copper IUD inserted on the 12 April 2012 (two days ago) and yes it was a sore procedure but it only lasted about 2 minutes, the hour after leaving the clinic though was hell, severe period pain type cramps which came in waves but tbh its understandable.. I mean you put a foreign object into your sex organs OFCOURSE its going to hurt for a while after. The only really aggrivating thing is the massive bloat i got and seem to still have, im naturally thin with a flat tummy but have very low self confidense and the past two days with a bloated protruding stomach have been quite hard to deal with. Does the bloat go away soon? Please tell me its not a perminant thing. Other than that though its been an ok few days pain wise, the evenings seem to be more crampy but its just like a bad period, and my bleedings been minimal. I cant tell whether its for me yet but so far its fine. Little tip: walk away those cramps! Trust me... The first day the cramps were quite bad and walking eased them so much :)

I recently had a Copper IUD inserted and I have to say I am THRILLED with the results!! I'm 27 years old, never been pregnant. I have history of intense migraines and it was time to stop playing around with hormone birth control options. I was a little skeptical at first b/c I have read horrific reviews about the insertion process, cramping, crazy heavy periods, pain during sex, lack of sex drive, weight cane, panic attacks, etc. etc. etc. For me, non of the above! The insertion process was for sure uncomfortable, but by no means a painful encounter. My OB/GYN talked me through the entire process before and during the procedure, which lasted ohh less then 10minutes, and it all made sense and I was fine. The first 48 hours were a little crampy, mostly pressure-related, but nothing a little Motrin couldn't tackle. I spotted for about 7 days after insertion and then nada! Felt like my normal self. First time my husband and I had sex was a little awkward, he did not feel the strings, nor was "cut" by them as I have read in some people's posts. My good friend is a mid-wife and told me KEEP going, your IUD is just finding its happy place in your uterus and it will find it spot and you'll be fine. She was RIGHT! Everything is fine. First period definitely a little crampy 1 day before it started, but nothing over the top. And yes my period lasted a few days longer than normal but didn't seem significantly heavier... a few extra days of spotting at the end! I am very satisfied with my Copper IUD and would definitely recommend it to anyone who has easy periods! I love it! Totally hormone free, which for me, means no more migraines related to estrogen drop-offs! And it's hassle free! You just do your thing... exercise, sex, work, play, whatever!! It's in there, happy, doing its thing! Don't be fooled by all the negative posts!! Do your research, talk with your OB/GYN to make sure this is the right choice for YOU... b/c it's not for everyone! GOOD LUCK!!
