My grandmother recently passed away after a decade fight with Alzheimer's. I am going through her journals and she often refers to Migraine headaches she fought (up to ten years before her memory started to slip). Does anyone know any connection between headaches and Alzheimer's?

We take care of my great aunt who has alzheimer's.She has complained over the last several months now of getting headaches.Right now she is in the hospital for the last week. The most they will tell me is she has pnemonia.I put off having papers drawn giving me permission to make decissions.I understand rules and all that privacy stuff. But when they know a patient has alzheimes, what do they think their going to remmeber.I feel like they could be running unnessasary test and taking advantage of a cituation. They ran 2 gall bladder test, why?I cannot get a straight answer.I finally left the hospital yeterday asking could I please leave a note to her Doctors asking her for permission to let us know what is going on.Sorry I just needed a place to vent.Sorry about your grandmother.I know how special they are.I lost mine two years ago this past Oct.

I know it is hard but until you become your aunts legal care giver they will not tell you much, I do volunteer work with people almost daily in a care center that have alzheimer's and because of the privacy laws and they are more tighter with people that have alzheimer's because they do not want people taking advantage of them. So if you are going to become her legal care giver het started because it is something that dose not happen overnight. I have seen the deceases effect people in many diffrent ways!! Some it gose so far and seems like they do not have it, For some starts down that dark path and is slow and steady and some it hits and is a steady drop off. You just never know how this is going to effect each person, But in the end it takes it toll on everyone.

Thanks for the reply back.We got a call this morning that they were taking her to the ICU,because of her breathing.Once they got her there, they gave her a breathing treatment. She was doing better by time we arrived. We finally got to speak to a Dr. and she said,it's not for sure, but she is almost certain it's cancer. The mass they were concerned about by her lung. They will do some test Tues. when the lung Dr. comes in.She said her health is not really too good to go through Chemo,we should just bring her home and make her as comfortable as possible.Try to keep her health up or she will just slip down hill.Eventually we're probably looking at a Hospic, the Dr. said. I do think now is the time to get all my I's dotted and T's crossed. Thanks again for the advice. My other aunt was basicly saying the same thing. The hospital is just protecting them. They don't know what kind of cituation could be going on.So I get what your saying about not knowing if someone is just wanting to take advantage.

My wife (71) is in her 10th year of ahlzeimers. About three years ago she started getting headaches in the afternoon or evening. Over the counter medice would help it, but recently it seems to be getting more severe wnd harder to cure. OTC meds would usualy help the ha go away. hanging on longer now. I would like to know if this is related to the Ahlzeimers? I have tried to eliminate every thing else I can think of with no success. She is pleasant and easy to care for, but the headaches are wearing on us both. Any suggestions or experiences with that migh help?

I have not heard of many bad head aches? It could be due to confusion on her part, But I would take her to the doctor just to make sure that is it. As you know with Alzheimer's it can do more than effect just her memory, So I would take her to your Family Doctor as soon as you can for a check up.

I was just wondering if you could explain what you meant by,it can effect more than just the memory?I help take care of my great aunt.just wondering what else were in for.Just the last couple of months we learned she most likely has lung cancer. They couldn't get the scope down her throat.and her health isn't good enough for a bi-opsy.Plus she really doesn't want to know, since there's not much she will be able to do for it.Having a hard time getting her to eat and take a shower over the last several weeks.I guess I might need to get some one in to help. But I'm thinking,if she won't do it for us,she won't do it for a stranger. But I had a friend say, sometimes the health aide can be more apt to convince.

Alzheimer's does more than effect just the memory when people think they can not remember who they are or the familly Members it can go into telling the rest of the body how to work also in the advanced stages near the end, that is what I meant when I said it can effect more than just the memory. That is why the brain will forget to send signals to the rest of the body that is why when your family member start to act different or says they hurt or have a headache take them to your doctor for a check up, It could be nothing or something, They may need a increase in the medicine or a addition to it. I had a friend we had to but in a Care Center he had Alzheimer's and near the end for about a year all he did was walk day and night and would only sleep in one hour time frames, then about 3 months before he passed away he said ( you know I am tried of walking) he sat down and never walked again and then passed away. He ate like a horse ever meal, You would never thought he was sick he knew you as long as you were there, when you left his sight you where gone from his memory. Alzheimer's effects every person a different way, I work with about 96 residents 4 to 5 days a week on a volunteer base’s and out of that many 50 of them have Alzheimer’s and each one of them is different. What can you except? Only time will tell.. Her not eating is a hard one. We have a resident with the same problem, she will not eat one day then one day she will eat and will leave the dinning room and come back 2 minutes later telling us she has not eaten that day and she is hungry and will do this time and time again, then the next meal not eat at all and go for days not eat a thing telling us she has already eaten. Or that she has got to the bathroom but did in her pants or we take her to the rest room and she will come to the T.V. room and sit down and stand up say I need to go to the rest room even thou she just went to the rest room. She may do this 30 or 40 time in 2 hours because she can not remember going.. You see each person is different when dealing with this thing you never know what is going to happen that day...

Thanks T,that helped a lot.My mom worked in a nursing home.I guess she knows what to expect. But it is new to me.Yeah one minute my aunt isn't hungary, then fifteen minutes later, she'll be ready to eat.But she just isn't eating much lately.

My husband is young for Alzheimer's - 59. He is in the early stages and we are still just reeling from the news. It makes some of the past couple of years make sense, however.
He has headaches - terrible ones - that seem to come in clusters.... They are similar to migraines if they are not . sometimes he has involvement down his left arm, etc.
He has seen several neurologists -that is actuallly how we got the ALZ diagnosis - but no one is getting to the bottom of his headaches... the preventative isn't working - and he was put on the patch for a drug that begins with an "E" that is like Aricept. My migraine neurologist says that a side effect is headaches (although these started long before the patches)- I know that there is brain atrophy going on causing the cognitive changes. Is this something else besides ALZ or could this be a painful problem r/t ALZ? I am a RN but am just now digging up info on ALZ - haven't worked with many patients with this diagnosis ..tdr

I am a RN but am just now digging up info on ALZ - haven't worked with many patients with this diagnosis ..tdr I have seen people as young as 45 with the begining of Alzheimer's, It is the worst thing I have delt with. This Diseases is one that you never know where or what it is going to do from hour to hour. Then as the days go on it goes to minute to minute. I have seen people go so far and not get any worse and then I have seen them go to bed one night and never be the same the next morning. I new this one man for three years he walked the halls never ever hardly slept, Nicest man you could now, He ate good, had a problem remembering people once you left his sight, but knew who you where as long as you where there, But like I said this man walked for three years, almost non stop, Then one day he said I am tired and sat down and never stood again stopped eating and passed away within 3 or 4 weeks, I can not remember.... This Diseases is like non other, you can not ever tell where it is going to go.. And it tears the family up... I had a aunt that had to stop driving because she could not remember how to turn the steering wheel on the car and drove her car threw a house one day, Now she could remember everything else about the car, How to stop ,use the clutch, start the car everything but how to turn the steering wheel, as time when went on she would forget certain things like she would cook rice but not put water in the pot.. You have my deepest prayer’s for your husband, I hope and pray that it he will stay up and steady and maintain a healthy life

I realize a while has passed since your post. My mom is struggling with the disease. My grandmother died of it. They both complained of severe headaches as the disease progressed.
My mom is presently in a study for the drug Dimebon. As part of the study we are supposed to encourage her to perform tasks on her own and think through problems as much as possible. I have her read to me and then do some simple arithmetic. Inevitably, the result is a splitting headache. It seems as the though the headache is brought on by the very act of concentrating. This of course makes her want to stop. It makes my step-dad, who is 88, want it to stop as well because he would rather she just didn't have a headache.
I think that the headache and the disease are very closely related. Cure the headache and you will have come a long way towards curing the disease.

There is a new study out now about music, and long term Memory, It works different on each person, You try and find out what music was special to that person and play it to them and it suppose to help bring back some long term memory.. You see the thought on this is it is something they like, reading is something not everyone likes, think about, Since you have or are forgetting the words it will make you mad, so maybe adding music and getting happy first then reading will come easier.

I am on my own personal crusade to get MSG's out of foods because they give me bad headaches. Has anyone ever studied a relation? Both Alzheimer's and MSG's are on the rise. It takes weeks but after cutting all MSG's,(which is really hard because they are in everything),my headaches subsided.

My father who was diagnosed with ALZ 5 years ago at age 80, has been constantly complaining of headaches and nausea in the past 6 months. He has almost no short term memory left. I took him to the doctor office and they could not find anything wrong from a physical examination. He did not submit to any blood or urine, etc test, just a physical examination.
He keeps repeating (mostly talking out loud) that he has headaches and nausea, and has also started OCD type behavior. He is obsessed about making sure the apartment door is locked and placing things in their "right" place by moving them an inch away from where the are or moving them away from near the edge of the table so that they would not fall down. He did not do these things 6 months ago.
He takes Aricept for his ALZ and Metformin for his diabetes type 2. The diabetes is very recent, it started almost 2 years ago. He has been a smoker for most of his life, but he has stopped smoking the past 7 months, he sometimes say he needs to smoke, but since no one else smokes in the house he forgets that he wanted to smoke.
If this account sounds familiar and you have some advice and/or insight please pass it on.
