Oxford House Sues Town of Fayetteville

Shame on Fayetteville and the Mayor! Wow! What an example you are settting. This organization has proven successful in helping people regain their lives, making them a contributing member of society. Judge not or you too will be judged. Addiction is an illness, as surely as diabetes or cancer!

Yeah they move into a neighbor hood with addicts, support staff and run a business. They do not care if they ruin a neighbor hood as long as they are getting a government check to run a supposed non profit business... staff all get pay checks, workers are in and out at all hours... should we let our neighbors and children live in fear of addicts moved in to benefit a out of state non profit corporation ?

No you should not tolerate that in your neighborhood. Non profits are just another way to get a government check and not pay taxes. They have no business in a residential area.

Any organization can be non-profit if they pay their principals and staff so generously that they expend all their income. Their headquarters is in Silver Spring, MD. That should tell you how "modestly" they operate.

I agree with the first commenter-shame on my mayor. His behavior is emabarrassing. I think a common thought is that "these people" will "bring down" the neighborhood-this isn't true. Studies have shown that property values after Oxford Houses move in don't go down. We also need to keep in mind that this population is not right out of detox-they are individuals trying to get their lives together, and as part of that process must be productive members of society.

Not gonna buy it. This company from Montgomery County Maryland is not calling the shots in Fayetteville and I very much question your 'studies have shown that property values after Oxford Houses move in don't go down'. Maybe they can move in next door to you. Congrats to the mayor for standing up to these people.

The only defense that I have seen on here is, "Why don't you let them move into your neighborhood?". Come up with a better argument. This one does not work for me. Most people would not be making this big of a fuss over something that helps people. Don't you see that this makes you look like a bunch of closed minded morons? I just wanna say KUDOS to our mayor and friend bill Corley for standing up for our community. Thy takes far more of a backbone than most people here have. Sadly it has gotten them into this mess with this dispicable organization. I hate reading these news articles because they're written very one sided

this story has nothing to do with addiction. however, a city can limit the amount of non-family residents in a single house. and I mean actually legally related (blood or marriage). So while it seems this "oxford house" has not broken a law yet, the local zoning board could have something to say still.

Never had a problem. I also have a dealer in my neighborhood and some addicts. No, I am not overrun with them, but they are here. They are in most neighborhoods. They already live in the midst of elderly widows and young children, and guess what, they aren't even trying to get help.
