I didn't take it personally when my son was diagnosed. Actually I knew he had adhd. I went to a psychologist and she gave him these tests which did indicate that he had adhd. Then I proceeded to go to his doctor with this information and we dipped into what was going on at school and also found that he was having lots of problems there. I myself have add and I have had it all of my life. So I knew that he had this for quite some time.

My son has had adhd. So do I. So we both live with each other with this condition. So when he was finally diagnosed with this it was not a shock. We coincide with this everyday. I'm always looking for more info about adhd. The more I know the more I can live with this condition and help my son to live with it as well. Again I'm always looking for info and appreciate if I'm sent info.

My son was on all the ADHD medications from the time he was 5 til he was 14 (he's 17 now). He still got in a lot of trouble in school(I can't begin to tell u how many times he was suspended in jr high), still made bad grades, I still couldn't take him anywhere, he was unbelievable.
I took him off all medications when he was 14, finally got him out of all the SLD classes, he has a 4.0 grade average as a senior in high school and he's graduating with his class all without drugs....I'm so proud of him. I just had to put that somewhere, thank you for your time. |

CAN I ASK U AN HONEST QUESTION? I'M NOT TRYING TO BE RUDE BY ANY MEANS. U SAY UR SON CHANGED AFTER TAKING HIM OFF ALL THE MEDS. BUT HOW DID U CHANGE? I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT YES, PERHAPS SOME OF THESE CHILDREN MAY HAVE SOME CHEMICAL IMBALANCES, BUT I BELIEVE PARENTING HAS A LOT MORE TO DO W/ THIS BEHAVIOR. HERE'S A PERFECT EXAMPLE: MY HUSBAND'S SON CAME TO LIVE W/ US BECAUSE HIS MOTHER COULDN'T "CONTROL" HIM. SHE HAD ALL THE USUAL COMPLAINTS: "HE DOESN'T LISTEN, HE THROWS FITS, HE STEALS, HE LIES"- ON AND ON THE LIST WENT ON. HE HAD BEEN MEDICATED FROM THE AGE OF 4. SUPPOSEDLY HAD ADD, ADHD, AND WAS BIPOLAR BY THE AGE OF 3. YEAH, UN-FREAKEN-BELIEVABLE!!! HE HAD BEEN INSTITUTIONALIZED JUST 6 MONTHS PRIOR FOR HIS BEHAVIOR- WHAT I MEAN BY THAT IS "MENTAL INSTITUTION". WE GOT HIM HOME W/ US, TOOK HIM OFF HIS MEDS, ADHERED TO A STRICT DAILY ROUTINE, HAD RULES W/ APPROPRIATE CONCEQUENCES. BUT AT THE SAME TIME WE LOVED AND CHERISHED HIM, HE HAD CHORES, WE WERE INVOLVED W/ HIM, PLAYED TOGETHER. THEN 2 MONTHS PASSED AND WE BEGAN RECIEVING OUR TOKENS OF THANKS- HIS GRADES IMPROVED, THE FITS STOPPED, HE EVEN GOT "AWARDS OF EXCELLENCES" FROM HIS TEACHER AND EVERYTHING WAS GREAT. HE WAS A NORMAL HAPPY LIL BOY. WHICH, WHEN HE FIRST ARRIVED HE WOULD SAY THINGS LIKE "I DO THAT CUZ I'M BAD- I WAS JUST BORN THIS WAY.. IT'S CUZ I DONT HAVE MY MEDICINE" IT WAS THEN THAT I REALIZED THAT THIS POOR BABY HAD BEEN BRAINWASHED HIS ENTIRE LIFE. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT- HE WENT HOME FOR THE SUMMER, AND NEVER CAME BACK- ALL OF OUR HARD WORK, OUR SWEAT AND TEARS- CUZ LET ME TELL YOU- IT WAS VERY HARD WORK TO GET HIM WHERE HE WAS. HIS MOM FELT THAT HE WAS MORE "TOLERABLE" AND DECIDED TO "KEEP HIM". LAST THING WE HEARD WAS HE WAS AGAIN INSTITUTIONALIZED. ALL THESE "LABELS" PUT ON HIM ARE A COP OUT ON - IMAGINE ALL THESE CHILDREN IN THIS WORLD ARE LIVING DAY TO DAY LIKE ZOMBIES- CAN'T EVEN LET OUT A GENUINE SMILE OR LAUGH BECAUSE THEY'RE SO DOPED UP. WHERE DOES ACCOUNTABILITY COME IN? WE CAN'T LET THIS EXCUSE RUN OUR CHILDREN'S LIVES. Hi i have ADHD and ive been on medication since i was 6years old! My psycologist tells my mum to give me a day of my tablets to see if i can control myself! But each time they take me off them i still cant control myself i blurt things out i dont mean to say and cant think straight i become very jittery and loud and i have an extremely high level of energy! So my mum kept me on my tablets! I thought i would give my view of ADHD because most of the comments on here have been the parents talking about their children! Wow Rosie...How awful for you, my heart really goes out to all that you guys invested and now she takes him back and ruins it. I didn't really change anything myself. I think more than anything he decided he didn't like the way he was either, but he hadn't been labeled bipolar or the like. The only thing I can say that was different is that I left his father (who is ADD) and maybe that made a difference but as far as i can tell he did it himself.

r u diagnosing yourself or has a dr said you have ADD? before you start taking any kind of medication...please check into some natural remedies. |

My son was just diagnosed with ADHD. I had a very strong feeling that he had it, as it is hereditary and I have it and about 4 other people in my immediate family. It was kind of inevitable. I am trying to find out if there is any kind of support groups at all in Charleston, South Carolina, or any kind of groups that meet to offer support to the kids. If anyone knows anything and can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi, Karen. Look for a chapter of the Learning Disabilities Association of America in your area. They usually have information regarding support groups. Also, there might be a CHADD group. They're an excellent resource too. You might want to consult LDOnline.com for good reading material. My best to you and your family.

Does anyone know the rules in schools for children with ADD? My 10 year old is going for a "hearing" for his referrals to the principal and they want to kick him out of school now. Can they do this? I don't know what to do. He's not physical or a Threat he is just very impulsive and his mouth... HELP!

these ladies put a lot into it. check it out. It might be of some real help to you. They ar a non profit site for parents with adhd children. If you have a question about adhd, they will have the answer. they are the most resourceful people on the net! one of the owners has a discipline system that is fool proof and guaranteed to work for adhd kids. she herself is adhd and she created it off her own personal experience. check it out you will love it. her system is called "the marble system, by ogram". She sold the rights to it to several different magazines and to numerous web site. IT WORKS!

My son has adhd i've been trying to get him in a school that deals with the problem here in Columbia, South Carolina. My son gerod has been expelled from two school districts i feel that my hands are tied and i know longer know what to do about the problem.I need help in finding him a school. I'm afraid that his behavior is going to get him institutionalized.

Let me tell yoooou my personal experience. My son has been involved with drugs and jail for the last 10 years. When I read that 50% of jail inmates are ADD I found and read four books on ADD. Immediately I realizd that the same symptoms were my life story, but with good luck and 8 years of therapy I had avoided some of the consequences. There are marvelous benefits to having ADD. Needing to "catch up" constantly with what is going on can make one very intuitive and there are clear links between ADD and creativity and intelligence. If this forum is interested I can explain more on the positives. To the lady moving to Alamogordo, I am in the area and would love to talk in depth with you. Marie
