yeah doc if you never been there dont talkDear Dr. Tracy:
Have you ever suffered from severe, recalcitrant cystic acne? The kind that leaves hard, painful nodules under your skin, that take sometimes months for one to just clear up, & usually leave behind a deeply pitted or red scar as a reminder... If you have not "walked in our shoes", then you do not know how traumatizing it is... mentally, emotionally, physically & socially. Therefore, you most likely will not understand the depths a person will go to in hope of a cure for their cystic acne.
I am a 35 year-old mother of 3 young children... who has suffered with cystic acne since age 17. I am an active, healthy & intelligent woman... but also one who is desperate to find a cure for my cystic acne. I have been on Accutane for three weeks & had many reservations about going on it. It took me several months to finally take the step & many years of suffering to seek Accutane as the cure.
I have tried every over-the-counter medication, prescribed topical & oral medications, natural herbal supplements, vitamins, injections, & laser treatments... & what has helped me... NOTHING. And I am still suffering from cystic acne 18 years later & have a face full of scars to look at in the mirror everyday to remind me of my losing battle with acne.
Let's be REAL, Dr. Tracy... Do you think that any Accutane users want to be on this medication? Of course, the answer is NO... given all the potential severe side effects that are known, as well as the fear of the unknown. Do you not think we would prefer a safer way to rid of ourselves of cystic acne?
As far as depression goes, who isn't suffering from depression if you have cystic acne (when you have all these sore & unpleasant looking cysts & scars covering your face)? This skin disease effects you not only physically, but mentally, emotionally & socially as well. To place the blame SOLELY on Accutane is an unfair accusation.
"Get a Clue" was your closing line to this desperate mother & her son... Is that the best advice you can offer, Dr. Tracy? I found that to be the most offensive, outrageous & insensitive response that anyone could have given... & was completely taken back that it was given by a doctor.

Hey everyone,
I feel your pain. After many years living with acne I have found a simple regimen that works for me: Wash twice a day with mild glycerine soap. Apply topical tretinoin (Retin A creme) after the nightly washing. Apply azelic acid (Skinoren) after the daily washing. Try this if you need a different approach. |

As a medical doctor and as someone who has personally experienced severe acne, I can honestly say that this is a great medicine, and in fact, the only real "cure" that we have for acne. There is not a medicine or drug on this planet that does not have side effects. Look at the back of your aspirin bottle sometime or look up some of the side effects of the many herbal remedies available over the counter. Or think about the many other mood-altering drugs on the market that people take every day. There are millions of people who have taken Accutane and have never experienced these side effects. However, your doctor is there in the case that it happens and you can stop taking the drug, just like any other drug. There is no reason to prevent millions of other people who do NOT experience these side effects from reaping the wonderful benefits of it. I personally had no side effects when I was on Accutane and it changed my life. Your face is the first thing people see and what you are often judged by. It is not just a couple of pimples, as the psychologist said. As a physician, I am aware that this is a disease of the skin, which can become debilitating if not treated. It is not to be taken lightly. It is frustrating to see ignorant people, who actually don't have their facts straight, diminishing this disease. If you are on Accutane and feeling sad or depressed, talk to your doctor. If you are on Accutane, dont get pregnant. It's pretty simple. I think this new system is ridiculous and it is unfortunate that this country is preventing people access to such a life-changing medication.

After losing the ipledge card - I spent 1/2 a day trying to order another. I finally found the trick to calming the 1-866- experience as follows:
1 for english 1 for logging in user id - put a star between each number and pound sign at the end after the last star 4 digit password Once logged in - enter #0 to get an actual person - a very nice person actually (my personal experience) |

Wpw, reading all these comments about the ipledge problems have got me nervous. I am 37 andmy son is 14 and we both are about to begin accutane. I registered with one dermatologist and haven't gotten a presrciption yet and have since tranferred to a different derm but now i have to go into the system to change the doctor but I do not have a username and password only the ID number. I do not see where to put in the ID number for a patient...just for a prescriber. Can anyone advise me on this. My son will start Accutane Monday; I have to wait until the 2nd week of August (they want 2 negative pregnancy tests first-even thugh I got my tubes tied last month) Any advise/help will be appreciated.

Carleen,
How is the accutane going for your 14 year old? My 13 year old starts tomorrow...I feel sorry since school starts soon and hope that it won't be too bad. Thanks, Elle

To anyone wanting to know the accutane has been AMZING for my 14 year old. Two weeks before school started he had huge cists on his nose so the dermatologist prescribed him predisone and by the time school started he had NO cists. I am soo pleased with this medication for my son. AS for me...I started accutane on September 1. Within 10 days...the dark ugly spots I had on both of my cheeks have faded and I had little bumps all on my forehead and my forehead was totally smoothed out. Its Incredible. This week was the start of side effects for me, my chin has broken out with lilttle puss bumps and has even swollen up a bit. I went to see my dermatologist and was told its the acne working its way through my pores. It is NOT a pretty sight but very much worth whats coming. I also experience mild irritation in my eyes but it dosen't prevent me from doing anything. Just having my cheeks clear up was golden and I haven't been on the medication for even a month. The side effects are worth what I have already seen this medication do for me and my son. Because I do not really frequent this site - if anyone wants to share their story with me or ask me questions you can contact me at carleenc4@yahoo.com)

I think this drug should have been pulled off the market. You guys and girls taking this drug now better look really hard at how much money they are spending so they can keep selling this crap. I took it for 2 years!! That was 10 years ago. I never got rid of my acne. I suffered the entire time, from both systic acne, and depression. Every report that has come out in the years since I went off it...scare me more and more. I'm 26 now. I still have acne, and I'm not sure what hidden damage that drug may have done...yet.

SoCalCat I am sorry it didn't work for you but I have seen incredible results and it has and is clearly working for me and my son. It is hard for you to say it doesnt work when I see the results. Perhaps the medicine is better now than 10 years ago. I am not going to make light of your situation. The medicine clearly gives you a list of the potential side effects; including the ones you suffered. Unfortunately, you were one of the unfortunate incidents. It is a risk....what isn't? My son and I are monitored monthly and will continue to take the medicine. I wish you well.

Linda... I know that this sounds dishonest... but the only way I was able to get any help was by pressing the option "that you were reporting a pregnancy on Accutane." I am thoroughly convinced that is the ONLY way that you will get through to an actual person to help you with your problem. I had to do it... & explained to them right away that I was NOT pregnant but caught in an automated loop in the IPLEDGE system & wasn't getting the help I needed. The person was very understanding & helped me with my problem. Just a suggestion. |

Glad to give you my 2 cents worth!

I have been using accutane for 10 years now and have never had any side effects other than dry skin. I also have never had a problem getting accutane until this assinine ipledge system came about. I would LOVE to have a word with the people who came up with this idea. 26 yr old males should not have this much trouble getting accutane.
HOWEVER if it weren't for the stupid underage girls who do not follow orders and get pregnant and then sue the makers of accutane, we probably wouldn't be in this situation. The irresponsibility of the few affect the whole. |

What dosage are you taking? The higher the dosage, the better chance of the acne not returning. |

After nearly $1k out of pocket & still no useful meds ..I'm searching for a black market source.
|
||||
|
How long do you have to wait to get pregnant after you quit using accutane?
