<quoted text> Can you document this a bit more? do you have an alternative chain group of more american alternatives to reommend? I do not shop at Walmart. I shop local, at small stores, and pay mroe gladly, to my friends, the town merchants and store clerks. It supports our entire lovely life-style in a nice little town. I go to the local Dollar Store sometimes, and to the second-hand store often. I go feed the cat outside the Dollar Store at times. that is the type of town and the type of store it is. They feed the cat too. Lucky cat! Bet that does not happen outside walmart!
You can google wal-marts use of government services to subsidize their business. It isn't just happenstance.

Many Wal-Mart workers use Medicaid

Of Pennsylvania's 10 largest employers, Wal-Mart has the highest percentage of employees enrolled in the state medical assistance program for the poor and disabled.

About one in six of Wal-Mart's 48,000 employees are enrolled in the Medicaid insurance program, at a total cost to the state of more than $15 million a year, according to state data.

The retailers with the second- and third-largest numbers of employees in the state, Giant Food Stores L.L.C. and Weis

OLYMPIA — More than 3,100 Wal-Mart employees in Washington were benefiting from state-subsidized health coverage throughout 2004 — nearly double the total for any other company, according to two confidential state reports.

That total is much higher than previously thought. And it indicates that as many as 20 percent of Wal-Mart's employees were getting taxpayer-funded health care for themselves or their dependents....

----------
A November 2004 New York Times article cites a study in Georgia that found 10,000 children of Wal-Mart employees were in the state's healthcare program at a cost to taxpayers of $10 million a year. The same article describes a hospital in North Carolina that found that 31 percent of its 1,900 patients were Wal-Mart employees on Medicaid, and an additional 16 percent were Wal-Mart employees with no insurance at all. And in California, a study released in August 2004 by researchers at the University of California at Berkeley determined that the healthcare expenses of uninsured Wal-Mart employees were costing the already economically-strapped state $32 million a year in taxpayer funds. Wal-Mart has disputed findings that the company encourages its employees to apply for public assistance and called the California study "biased," noting that the researchers at Berkeley did not contact the company for facts and statistics.

Costco is generally considered the blue state version of Wal-Mart. At least they appear to treat their employees well but they are still flogging lots of excess from overseas onto consumers who really don't need it.

====
"An August 2004 University of California, Berkeley Labor Center study found that many Wal-Mart workers in California rely on government safety net programs such as food stamps, Medi-Cal (California's version of Medicaid) and subsidized housing at an estimated cost to taxpayers of $86 million annually--$32 million for health-related expenses and $54 million for other assistance.

Further, families of Wal-Mart employees utilize these services considerably more than the average for families with employees of all large retail companies. In fact, if other large retailers in California were to provide wages and benefits at Wal-Mart's level it would cost California taxpayers an additional $410 million in increased public assistance costs. According to the study..."

Speculation is that Wal-Mart's backing of mandated health insurance is simply to try and destroy competitors like Target.

Wal-Mart isn't doing anything for anyone other than itself. That much is crystal clear.

The socialist mindset of so many Californians has already impoverished that "progressive" state, but your type still thinks money grows on trees and Santa Claus will bring us what we want.
If France, that reviled state in the minds of all Republicans, for standing up to GW Bush's BS about weapons of mass destruction, can afford health care for all its citizens, as well as any visitors, why can't the almighty US of A? Please explain.

How can GM and any other corporation compete with companies that don't have all the expense of covering their employees as well as retirees. Or is it ok to screw the people that have worked for you for 15 or twenty years. I have a friend who just retired from a second job of 15 years, that's right two 15 year stints, and both times just before she retired, the company or county in the 2nd case, pulled her health benefits.

Welcome to America.

Because we are friggin' broke. Watch the documentary: http://www.youtube.com/watch... - and pay special attention to the part between 9 and 11 minutes.

But it's really about much more than health care. Health care is just one of many scare tactics being used to create a society of helpless and dependent people.

We started off as a one-of-a-kind individualist free market Republic that allocated power to a diffused government. A government that was controlled by the people.

Our nation is being subverted to a collectvist, centrally planned government of concentrated power. A government that controls the people AND how much freedom they have.

What good is healthcare if you are murdered by your own government?

The first reality check is going to be when all the new patients start lining up for our already over burdened medical system.

If the Liberals were 1/2 as samrt as they THINK they are, they would have started with a plan to increase the number of health care professionals and facilities.

I actually look forward to listening to the crying these government health care suckers are going to be doing when they realize they've been screwed.

Daily Horoscope for December 20

Taurus

As Mars turns retro, emotional tension makes you feel as though you're walking on eggshells. The temperature has risen by several notches, making the situation at home more fraught. Better to clear the air quickly and cleanly than to sulk and brood in ways that simply prolong the agony.
