A most cursory glance at a policy directed at increasing the cost of daily consumption and reducing income tax hits one particular pocket of people most drasticaly - the ones with no income! They do not enjoy a larger relief of tax burden because they do not have a source of income thus, not only is there no relief for them, this largely older, less able group of people suffers from an increasing cost of living. Disgusting!

Personally, I'd rather have the Singaporean leaders, rather than the American ones.

o.O and nna u are wrong about the increase cost of living on the poor... theres plenty of areas in singapore where u can find cheap food that are usally better than fastfood and those big restaurant... in fact its the rich with their high spenting that will be the affected the most. even if a 2% increase in gst u still wont see much of and increase in daily item , which only cost almost a few dollars compare to the rich spenting hundreds if not thousand on luxary goods every month.

It is tragic that the poor will get poorer and the rich will get richer. The people most affected will be those in the lower income range. Cost of living will increase and they have to stretch their dollars even more. I hope there is sufficient exemptions accorded to the lower income group.

In my opinion, "the rich getting richer & the poor getting poorer" is one of the biggest lie that has ever been told... The rich can become poor if they allow folly into their lives. The poor can grow rich if they let wisdom take them by the hand =) Anyway, about the GST hike, I think many Singaporeans kind of expected that to happen... Prices only go up... It'll be refreshing if they ever go down, but even then, many will be questioning such a drop... won't they?

PAP states that increasing the GST would HELP the poor. From this perspective, do your calculation based (for example) S$800/mth income home. Each dollar will have a slightly less net worth in the market. For the more fortunate (with recent high pay raise), this increase would increase the amount they spend each month. But please remember, not everyone spends like this every month. I dont think even the richest frequent LV, Tiffany, Prada, Gucci etc every other day. Furthermore, the increase would not bother the rich, because they are already loaded with cash. If a person is going to buy a Ferrari car, would that person bothered with high fuel consumption or high road taxes? NO!

For the Casino "debate", most of you do not even realised that the plot of land designated for Casino were already in the works (preparing for the construction). Your Govt basically wants to "engage" the general citizens with topics to blindfold you of the reality. Why is the butcher asking for permission to kill the chicken when the chicken is already slaughtered and ready for the pot?

Come on, GST is not that bad for the country especially our aging generation. We need Gst to keep our country running. Let's face it. Federal government is giving hands to each individule states or province extract money imcoming. It's up to each state not to miss spend those money. The state government should be greatful because that's an extra revenue. Gst brings down cost in some products and not the other.
I thinks the most corrupted people are the state government and city council who either consume money and miss spend on other things. Every year the land tax keeps increasing and they demand more money from the federal government.

A GST hike of 2% to a total of 7% is nothing to cry about if the additional IRAS revenue is being ploughed back into the economy to benefit the people. If the percentages have not changed since my last browse, Germany has a 19% VAT. Even a country far off our radar like Latvia is doing 18% VAT.
