I am a smoker. Wished I had never started. But I have 2 sisters, and a sis in law. They quit. Guess what? all 3 of them put on about 40#. So guess I make the choice, be obese and die of heart problems or smoke and not gain all that fat and stil die from medical problems.
Tried the patches. Put on 4# in a little over 2 wks.
I will not be a overweight pig.
Hello Lynn,
The weight gain associated with smoking is completely preventable.
Smoke or don't smoke - it is your choice.
I smoked for 16 years or so before quitting using the laser therapy method. I tried everything else, and nothing worked but this.
As to WHY people who smoke gain weight?
Easy pickins!
Smoking reduces hunger pangs.
Plus, many people gain weight because part of the addiction is the hand to mouth thing. Instead of smoking, quitters end up eating all day.
I quit and yes, I have put on about 10 pounds since. But if you properly adjust your habits, you can do it without weight gain.
Keep lots of baby carrots on hand.
Celery is good too.
Loads of gum works as well.
A benefit I have seen since I quit smoking is increased lung capacity and endurance. Whereas before I would get winded running down two flights of stairs, I can now run miles before experiencing any real discomfort. You have to replace a bad habit with a few good ones.
Instead of sitting on your backside, schedule a few runs a week. Start slow and build slow. Before you know it (really in a few months) you will see yourself losing the LB's and feeling great (as well as looking better than before).
Please bear in mind that I am no crazy reformed smoker who spends time advocating quitting and telling people their habit is disgusting. I believe that a person should choose for themselves when the time is right to quit. While I wish others would quit, it isn't because of the smell or health effects per se, I just want them to feel better. But I NEVER push it on anyone. I always thought that was obnoxious.
I tried the patch, the gum, the lozenge, and a prescription med. None worked and all had horrible side effects.
Then I stumbled upon these guys:
http://www.laserconceptschicago.com/ I was 30 years old and smoking a pack a day. I was at work and I started to feel like I was having a heart attack. I went to the ER and my mom showed up, crying that her baby was dying. She offered to pay for me to quit and I presented her with the laser concepts pitch. She forked over the dough and I set my appointment. Here we are, a few days from the 2 year mark. I smoked the rest of my pack (5 cigs) standing outside the building before my appointment. I walked out a non-smoker and haven't smoked a cig since.
I still have the picture of me smoking my last one.
To prove it to myself, I kept 3 packs in my apartment 'in case'. They are still there, covered in dust (and probably no good anymore) as a testament to the effectiveness of the treatment.
Best of luck on your journey.
If you ever want to quit, I recommend you check out the laser concepts folks.
