Is buying a gun a suicidal act?

Americans often buy guns for self-defense, a purpose that now has Supreme Court validation.

Matthew Miller is one of a small but vocal group of anti-gun zealots, supported by grants from the Joyce Foundation, whose,"research", supports the pre-defined views of their sponsor.

If they showed that there was no statistical connection, the funding tap would turn off.

Personally I am shocked by such a rational editorial in the Chicago Tribune.

Sure buying a gun leads to suicide, amongst criminals attacking armed potential victims.

I'm still trying to figure out what the article was about. That had to be the most convoluted piece written as of late. Suicides will seek any convenient method around. Usually after much thought. (The thinking preceed's the action). Suicides have been around before guns. Guns are just an easy and quick way to ends ones life. I must say that I've seen a few that changed their minds just as they pulled the trigger and missed a killing shot and created a lot of work for a plastic surgeon.

When I was in the military,I seen a few Suicides. Most of them I say about 90% where not with weapons. They either hung themselfs, used drugs and even tryed using car to commit Suicides. There was only one of them that used a gun,it was a freind of mine.Who before going on patrol toke his weapon out of the armor hands and walked about 20ft,than killed himself because of his wife.

There are many purposes for this article, and all of them are fraudulent.
If you want a gun, you have a mental disease and should be prevented from owning one.
Guns are only good for killing.
We (the government) know what is best for you, will protect you, and you have no need for a gun.

Repeat after me: Law-abiding citizens who own guns are not the problem.

Miller is from the HSPH. A "school" that is funded by the same anti-gun organization that funds the Violence Policy Center, numerous anti-gun websites, and bankrolls most of the anti-gun "research" in the US.

Only if you point it at or around your head loaded with your finger on the trigger. Then maybe.

I'm really beginning to wonder if the anti-gun advocates have ever listened to anyone with common sense much less had any themselves.

Thanks for writing an article that illuminates the paranoia on at least this aspect.

One statistic I don't see mentioned that the gun controllers would probably like is the erratic and hard to track instance when someone suicides by gun using one not owned by anyone in their home. Be it illegal or another neighbors legal one. People who feel they need to die find a way.

I just say; Death is not an option, it is an inevitable eventuality but it should never be a choice.

I hope allot of people get to see the article.

Interesting the auto locater got my location a bit off. I'm actually in Reno Nevada.

I'm kinda surprised by some of the other comments. It is obvious that a Gun is a Tool designed to Kill. But it can also be used to disable and has been in the past not just living but also vehicles and other machinery have been disabled by the action of guns.

The most dangerous thing around any gun ever is ignorance. Even ignorance so common as knowledge of it's present location can be considered the cause of many accidents. And then ignorance from people not knowing of the dangers of the tool or how they work.

Imagine if wood shop class didn't point out (saying not demonstrating) that saws can cut hands just as easily as wood. Sure it sounds like common sense but there are allot of people I know who would want to touch just to see how sharp it is and there goes a finger. All tools even as simple as the fulcrum of a lever have their dangers. Should that pivot point shift any load on the lever goes the wrong way and it could lead to injury.

Just a little more food for thought.

There is nothing wrong with suicide aside from the emotional trauma brought upon family & friends. People are allowed to do anything they want to themselves. Let them remove themselves from the gene pool in order to make society stronger.

Gotta break some eggs to make an omelet.

Harsh? Yes. True? Also, yes.

Dependency:

You seem to be trolling several threads at once.

Surprising that someone with so little to say is saying it so often.

Stupid little gun girl. You talk tough on line but are all cowards where it really matters.
If you're so bad why aren't you out there protecting people.
Oh that's right. You're too afraid of your own shadow.
Please put your gun in your mouth and pull the trigger! LOL!

I guess that means if you own a car, and a gas stove, and a knife (or any sharp objects), and have access to a tall building and/or a body of water and/or a bridge....you and the whole family are doomed to commit multiple suicides.

What an idiot
