Stewart Cink wins British Open in playoff with 59-year-old Tom ...

This was the 1st golf tournament that has held my interest for a long time. It was
great to see the ebb and flow of players rising to the top only to be beaten back
by a great golf course and the elements. Only Old Tom Watson stayed near the
top all the way through. He just flushed that 8 iron to the green on 18 only to have
it trickle a few inches too far into the rough. The next shot brought all the pressure
to bear and it didn't work out. What he did this weekend even took Tiger Woods
and his failure off the airwaves for one whole day. Even the idiotic frontrunners
that worship him had to support Watson's effort for the impossible. In the end
Watson, like Tiger, proved to be mortal. The saddest thing, really, is that maybe
no one will ever remember Stewart Cink's great victory in a Major, it will always be
Tom Watson's loss.

I feel for Tom Watson because he gave all of us old guys a thrill. However, I also feel for Stewart Cink because he will be remembered as the guy who took it away from Tom Watson. Watson had his chance on the 18th hole but he couldn't control his nerves. But, that's the essence of individual competition; you can't think it, you can't wish it, it can't be given to you. You have to do it yourself! Stewart Cink was able to overcome the obvious intimidating factor of facing the legendary Tom Watson in a playoff. My congratulations to both of them. It was great to watch.
