"Top Golfers" are coming? Really? Does that include Tiger Woods, THE "top golfer" in the world?

No?

Interesting. If there's so much going for the Travelers, including a sizeable purse, why is this the case?

Nope, you will never see Woods come to this tournament...and yes he is the only "Top" golfer in the world...the Courant needs to get their definition correct of "top golfer"...

The field should be a little stronger this year because of the US Open being held just down the road in New York. Otherwise, it would just be an average field... Until they move the date of this tournament from the week after the US Open, the field will generally be average at best.

First black PGA champion, Charlie Sifford, Greater Hartford Open.

Only black title sponsor, Sammy Davis Junior Greater Hartford Open.

Golfer who avoids Hartford like plague? Tiger Woods. Is that irony or ignorance?

Because the dates usually conflict with another major tournament. It has for years!

Tiger's people has scouted the tournament past 2 years - like other golf venues and nothing against Cromwell is too small to handle the security required by Tiger Woods

Woods plays the US Open the weekend before and hosts the ATT Tiger Woods National the weekend after.

He never plays three weekends in a row except in the post-season playoffs (September) when companies like BMW and Coke are offering million dollar pots. He also had obligations to the Buick events until this year.

Even when Buick sponsored the tourney, he didn't show. As a Cromwell resident who lives near the course,I agree with the previous blogger that Cromwell and tournament security could never handle Tiger at the tournament.

However, if he does come, I'll start taking names nwo for parking at my house. 5 minutes to course, on Rt 99, and shaded. $100 a car, plus, I'll throw in Cromwell's finest drinking water.

Well, golfers #3, 5 and 8 already made a commitment. Not too bad I would say. I really don't care if that prima donna ever shows up at Cromwell. Like the other post stated, he never showed up even when he and the tournament was being sponsored by Buick. We are better off that the whiney prick stays home. If he requires that much security, there must be a reason.

What is missing from the article is how business and not the government saved the golf tournament.

Just another example how a market solution trumps a government solution.

Didn't the Courant just editorialise against golf courses last week when the people who own land in Litchfield wanted to build one.
How can they be gushing in favor of golf only a week later?
What about the water use?.
What about all the fertiliser?
What about all the expensive housing along the fairways?
What about all the traffic?.
No wonder they are Broke and Zell is ready to pull the plug.

Yes they did. They do not believe farmers should be able to sell their land for development. The Courant wants them to be stuck with it forever, even if they don't plan to do any farming on it.

The editorial board even objects to farmers allowing cell-towers to be built on their property. It's fine if other types of landowners do so, but farmers can never do so.

That's known as "Courant editorial board logic." The rest of us know it as "total horsehockey," if I may use an agriculturally-derived colloquialism.

That's all fine by the Courant, so long as it's never done on erstwhile farmland.

I know, makes no sense to me either. But that's what it is.

TIGER CHEERLEADERS - Who is the real King of Majors Tiger Woods or Roger Federer? The PGA and ATP both have 4 majors a year. Tiger won his first major in 1997 at the Masters at the age of 21. He is now age 33 with 14 majors and is 4 shy of the all time PGA record of 18. Roger Federer won his first major in 2003 at Wimbledon also at the age of 21. He is now age 27 with 13 majors and 1 shy of the all time ATP Majors record of 14. Considering that Roger won his first major 6 years and 25 majors after Tiger won his first and that Roger is only 1 major away from the all time record, is there any doubt who is the real King of majors? In 2009 TIGER CHEERLEADERS will watch Tiger try to win the U.S. Open for the 2nd year in a row. Afterwards, watch Tiger in New York watching Roger Federer try to win the U.S. Open for a record 6th year in a row! Now even TIGER CHEERLEADERS know that deserves a PEP-RALLY!

The fact is Tiger is bigger than the PGA. He could start his own tour and it would get more attention than any PGA event.

That's BS. First, Woods travels with his own people and his security is only heightened when his family is present. Do you know the size of Cromwell PD or it's resources?

One thing is for sure, when the PGA hits town, it's not so much the size of the Dept that could not handle Tiger, but the size of the officer's heads. They all think they are Super Cops when the Tournament is in town.

Daily Horoscope for May 23

Capricorn

You're keen to look on the bright side of things and to ignore anything unpleasant or worrying. That's fine, provided that you're ready to face up to life's difficulties again tomorrow. But it's not such good news if you persist in looking the other way whenever a problem presents itself, especially if it's connected with your work or health. It may be time to face a few facts, Capricorn.
