So far, no one from Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network or any other coalition has picketed outside of the Golf Channel's Orlando-based headquarters to protest anchor Kelly Tilghman's on-air ...

Maybe the Sentinel should send Shannon Owens to both Picket and cover the story. She could interview herself being that she is one of 5 people who believe Tilghman should be fired.

This is sooooo stupid. I believe people were being hanged way before we had salvery in the US. In fact, who said that hanging was reserved as a 'Blacks Only' membership? If we don't stop getting over some of this dumb retaliation, it may never end..... I believe the Golf Channel is wrong for not embracing that it was not said to offend anyone, and Tiger has already realized that. Sharpton, shut-up already... Step up Golf Channel, she should be embraced as one of the family, and only punish her when she has done something bad.... Get some.... golf BALLS....

We (meaning Americans) used to lynch "cattle rustlers" didn't make any difference what color their skin was. The word has nothing to do with race.

Al Sharpton is nothing but a race pimp. There was no intent to "offend" anyone with Kelly's comments. He spends his life looking for ways to be offended, but guess what? There is no right in this country to NOT be offended!

If only Al would go away. Fat Chance. What a loser. Must be terrible to have such an enormous chip on ones shoulder. By the way, Al offends me.

Get a Life Al Sharpton - outside of the USA. I like the one comment about Al being a "race pimp" could not have said it better. Did Al ever stop to think that his comments make his race look bad not the other way around.

Lynching has nothing to do with race. I didn't associate the word with blacks until this mess. I use that word often, i.e. "my kids would lynch me if I ...." And we are not black.

Kelly, I'm sorry your employer didn't back you up toward Al Sharpton, but bowed down to him instead. Maybe Kelly should consider if she even wants to continue to work for such an employer. Al Sharpton probably doesn't even watch the Golf Channel - he probably has cronies out there looking to report/twist something so he can make some noise. Al Sharpton is the problem - he is keeping prejudice alive and falsely fueling his race.

Kelly needs some support from her employers or she should move to another network. If Johnny Miller can say whatever he wants and they don't suspend him I don't see how they can suspend her. Furthermore, Al Sharpton is a moron of the worst kind. How about we lynch him..???

First of all, Al Sharpton does not speak for all African Americans nor does he speak for me. Having said this, it is unfortunate that there is no one who has responded on this blog who is racially sensitive. Lynching has everything to do with race. The term "lynching" came from an infamous slave master named William Lynch, who was cruel and his ideas and tactics were harsh and inhumane to BLACK slaves.
The comment made by Kelly Tilghman was ignorant. She is not racially sensitive and she was out of order. The Golf Channel should also make her, along with the rest of the staff, take some diversity sensitivity training. This should be in addition to suspending her.
I wonder what the responses would be if the comment was racist toward a white person and the announcer was an ethnic minority.
Unfortunately, Tiger Woods did not acknowledge that the comment was not a back-handed compliment; it was biggotted. He has excused her behavior so other people think it is OK. It isn't. As an African American, I am deeply offended and reminded daily that people who are prejudice and do not realize it are that most dangerous of all.

It is truly amazing the effect that only one voice can have; if there is the possibly of some nefarious involvement.

I acknowledge that race should not be used as a factor in judging Ms. Tilghman's comment. It clouds the real issue of her instructing young players to ''Kill'' someone in order to win. Does the name ''Nancy Kerrigan'' ring a bell to anyone? Violence is rampant in our society. Do we really want to embrace the mob/gang mindset of '' If you can't beat them, Kill them''.

Sharpton needs to calm down and stop trying to make things bigger than what they are. The comment was a poor choice of words that had no ill intent and were directed to Woods not Sharpton so if Woods was able to see that so should Sharpton and let it go. Would Sharpton be pushing for the anchor woman to be fired or making this much fuss about the comment if it were an African American Woman? I don't think so!

What kind of world do we live in that an on air broadcast can recommend the lynching of a black athlete (in a back alley, no less) have no reprocussions until someone of color makes a public statement but an editor can't post a picture of a noose as a play on (her) words without getting fired. She ought to be fired and he (editor) ought to be commended. All he did was put an image to her words.

Many golf fans are African American. Tiger Woods has been dominant in this sport for at least 15 years, yet the industry is still as racism as it was when African Americans could only step on a PGA course as a caddy. Kelly as woman and minority like Tiger Woods should be fired but yet we support an educated woman making such discriminatory remarks as it was a mistake. No it showed what is really in her heart fire her!!!!!!!

Has Tilghman every made a comment similiar to that with regards to any other golfers in the past? If she has not then the correct course of action should be to fire her from the golf Channel. If the Golf Channel does not choose to fire her then they show as an organization that they are in agreement with her "poorly choosen" words. How any one person so chooses to use the word "lynch" in the same sentence as with Tiger Woods knowing the plight of Americans of African descent either shows that they are truly ignorant, blantanly racist or that the education received at Duke University is sorely lacking in fundamental teachings in working in a growing diversified world. It is pathetic that in 2008 people continually use poor judgment in their choice of words. Today there needs to be swift and harsh penalties with no exceptions. Don Imaus ant The Dog Bounty Hunter should have been examples. In racist America appease the poor black folk and then it is on to business. Thanks Golf Channel. Didn't know you cared. Ohhh, you still don't.

It amazes me that white folks who lynched my family member just 35 years ago say it is no big deal to discuss nooses and lynching as it relates to African Americans.

Are we kidding ourselves on our barbaric history as a nation?

We celebrate Martinn Luther King's Birthday on Monday as African Americans did not become true Americans until 1964 when the civil rights act was passed.

It did not matter what educational, economic background we had. We were indentured servants not able to sit at the decision seat of America. Wake up folks. Notice I did not say 1865. I said 1964. I was the first person born in my family with the full right to vote as a citizen of the United States, but yet my family over 400 years built a country where we neither received compensation for our labor or benefit for that building. Then it took 99 years to become an equal citizen as every day white folk were empowered to lynch us if we looked in their eyes.

When your family has sufferd through that barbaric history then you tell me if it is no big deal.

I disagree with you. The point that needs to be focused on is that the comment was made as "poorly" as it was but at least you see the true nature of the beast. No one person can truly hide their character. It is only a moment of time before their true face is shown to the world. it only takes one slip up because then you should know as a person it was not the first time it was said. it was the first time she was CAUGHT saying it on live air nonetheless. A drunk driver with his/her first DUI in court more than likely was not the first time that person was driving drunk. Chances are it was the first time they were caught driving drunk. That is what is so sad about the situation.
