Bob Hunter commentary: Mickelson's game not living up to his fame | The Columbus Dispatch
#1 Jun 4, 2011
A little "weird" that a guy with four majors and 39 victories would be treated with more enthusiasm than a player with zero majors and 8 victories? Not really. Plus Mickelson has been around a few years longer.
Being "number one" in golf is a function of a rather complex mathematical formula, not the result of winning a recognized championship competition. It fulfills an apparent widespread need for ranking things ... but it certainly doesn't produce any universal agreement about which competitor is "the best" in a given week in a given tournament.
That being said, Luke Donald received more than "an occasional Luuuuuke" from the fans at the Memorial for his efforts. There were holes I watched where the number was closer to fifty than a single beer-enhanced serenader. If Bob Hunter had watched this group come off the 17th green he would have heard a Chorus of "Luuuuuukes". If he were listening.
I suspect if you asked Luke Donald the direct question that he would tell you he was quite pleased with his reception by Memorial fans.

Bob, quit being a hater. Phil is without doubt the second best player of his generation. That's not so bad...see Tom Watson, Sam Sneed, Walter Hagan, etc.
Point is, fans are entitled to cheer for whoever they want.

And they still cheer for John Daly too.

I don't understand the aim of this article. Does sound as if the author is a "hater."
Anyone who follows golf regularly understands the maddening caprice of the sport.
Right now Luke Donald is playing the best, most consistent golf, but in the Tiger era, winning is the name of the game (especially majors). As the author pointed out Phil has 39 career PGA wins in 19+ seasons, including 4 majors. Donald in 10+ seasons has 3 career PGA victories (0 majors).
Whose game is not living up to the fame again? Did you catch that Donald quote in which he said he would trade the #1 ranking for Phil's accomplishments?
We all know at this point Tiger and Phil are focused on winning majors which is the only thing that will enhance their place in golf. Like Phil said last year, a one-win season is disappointing unless that single W happens to be a major championship.
A multi-major winner is a fan favorite; imagine that.

Too bad that Tiger was brought low by thinking with the wrong head. Just a little snatch did him in.
