It is quite shortsighted to judge a form of government by an alcoholic Yeltsin and idiot Bush or an autocrat who's enjoyed a historic commodities bull market.
History is a better guide. It's hard to name a government/country which promoted free speech and diversity and who's people suffered. And to the contrary, there's not been a country in modern times that prospered under an autocratic leadership.
You definitely have a point...but I think the Russian people have had enough of western meddling for a while and they prefer to do things their way....and it is their right to develop their new democracy at their own pace and speed which their economy can handle....
...I think they prefer to save their country and then worry about the fine points....

I think that now western politicians are ready to recognize any Russian hooligans as Russian opposition if only these hooligans say that they are against Putin because Putin prohibits them to be free.
Of course... they support any hooligans...because they do not like the fact that Putin will not roll over and play dead and do exactly as Washington tells them to do.... they don't really want countries to be free and independent....unless they kiss their behinds...

Even if that were true, Kremlin tactics and mass arrests will only stimulate the opposition
This opposition has very little support in Russia...however...I'm sure that western instigators can try to sneak in and whip the up into thinking they are the great legacy to Russia...it won't be the first time that outsiders have tried to whip up a fervor inspite of the laws and inspite of public sentiment....

<quoted text> Russia hasn't been allowed to rest after years of communism. Yet, it is under constant attack by every nut job. With the present economic turmoil in the US I wonder when the demonstrations will start here and how the US government will react. Will it once again accuse American People of antigovernment demonstrations as it has repeatedly in the past? It seems those who attack Russia on this forum from the US forgot about the way the US labels its people when they don’t like them.
Yes...weren't all the college kids who were against the Vietnam War called commies? when all they were doing is protesting a war they saw no reason for the USA to be in????? and being forced to support a war they didn't beleive in...?
