Valentine's Day Equals Happy Hetness

Full story: www.womanist-musings.com

I'm glad I don't watch much television, because the weeks of adverts of lots of straight folks celebrating romance would quickly drive me up the wall. I mean advertising is usually wall to wall straight folks anyway. It's absolutely everywhere you look, in every media you consume and it's all straightness all the time. Well now we get to throw in the emphasis on love and couples blaring from every direction and the omission is glaring. "It's the time of year where we all celebrate romantic loooove! Uh... but not yours. No we don't want that. Yours doesn't count. We mean real love. And by real love, we mean man/woman love - the only love there is!"

What's with that Milk Tray man?! Am I not worth James Bond rip-off stunts to bring a box of poxy chocolates too?!

If I go shopping I am bombarded "straight love! WORSHIP THE STRAIGHT LOVING! Anyone not in a straight loving relationship right now is sad and lonely in a desolate empty life!" (can you tell it bugs me?) Signs and banners, packaging and jingles. And don't even get me started on the music. Boy meets girl. Girl meets boy. Girl sings about losing boy. Boy sings about wanting girl. Boys and girls sing together about how wonderful the opposite gender is. Gods, if they do a cover of a song that was sang by the opposite gender they change the damn words to desperately avoid THE GAY! *crash of thunder* *lightening strike* *maniacal laugh*

Nah, we’re just sick of heterosexuals flaunting their lifestyle.
I don’t care what you do in private but, I don’t want to see any of that perverted hetero stuff in the streets.

I bought a card for my same sex love. Security did not try to stop me, as a man buying a "husband" card. Hallmark has not contacted me to ask it be returned. The resturaunt seated us as a male couple. Last time I checked we were not out of real grievances.

Actually, you'll find that nearly all, if not all, Hallmark brand cards are non-specific about the gender of the two people in a relationship. The cards that say "to my husband" don't include "from your wife". It's open-ended. And the cartoony animals on the cards no longer have a tie and a hairbow to signify that their genders, they are non-specific.
There may be a few human-cartoons that are specific, but you'll definitely find an option for a same-sex relationship among them. There are a few same-sex specific ones also, but they seem to sold out whenever i've looked.

This doesn't just apply to valentines day, but also wedding, anniversary, birthday, etc.

You know what, I have a hard time feeling all that bad about Valentine's being "straight dominated" or whatever. I mean, it is just a saint's day, St. Valentine. And the Catholic Church is the original "authority" behind declaring this day a holiday.

Not to mention, companies advertise to their largest consumer base in a hope to drum up sales. If they feel that they will make more moeny by advertising to straights, then that's their choice. I don't know how you prove them wrong. Maybe there is one company advertising to gays, and if you purchase form that company it will show them that their adverts worked. You don't see Valentine's Day adverts targeted at the swampy guy who lives in his mom's basement and pretends that he has a girlfriend in Canada either. They don't expect to see much profit return from that kind of advertisement. So while equality would be great, the common statistic is only 10% of potential consumers, so you can't blame the for-profit companies.

Daily Horoscope for May 19

Scorpio

There are days when you feel you can't say or do anything right, but happily this isn't one of them. In fact, it's a wonderful day in which everything goes well and it's remarkably easy to get on well with whoever happens to be around. Not that you want to spend your time with just any old person. You'd much rather get together with some close friends or that special someone in your life.
