Yes, we all know that the poor teachers here in Chambersburg are so poorly paid compared to the rest of the world. In these tough times exactly how many have been laid off? How much of a pay cut have they had to take so they could keep working? No teacher has lost their job and none have lost a penny in their paycheck! I have nothing against teachers, but stop with the overworked under paid crying.
And if teachers were layed off, then what? I bet you'd be the first one to complain that classroom sizes are too big and your child gets no individual help. COME ON!!

That would be a bet you would loose! And you would be the first to complain if they were asked to take a pay cut!

Frugal? or just plain down Tight....the point is, this is a story that should have been under the column called "Who Cares"?
Most of these type of people are not fun to be around. They usually are users not givers, they spend most of the time they have figuring out ways to get something free from someone else. Yeah, they give the guy a "gift" for the vacation home....would they be as kind and giving as him? I doubt it. They would spend an hour in line at one of the warehouse stores to get the family a free piece of cheese and then rush over and get in the next line for a free sample of cheerios, call that lunch and go home without buying anything.
They go to every free picnic they can barge in on but never have friends and family over for a "free" picnic at thier house unless everyone brought everything needed.
When you talk to them ,they spend all the "free" time they have in the conversation telling you how much they saved that week and what all they got for "free". They made a pair of pants for the kids from a potato sack and are so proud or went to the movies using box tops they saved for tickets.
This particular family may not be as bad as all this, but I know plenty who are and to me it just does not make sense to be this "frugal" unless you need to be. There was a day I had to be frugal and I learned how to survive and am glad to have that knowledge just in case it gets to the point I need to fall back on lessons learned, but to live your whole life that way just to say you are frugal is crazy in my opinion.
Now that you are famous you can cut this story out and make paper hats to wear on your birthday. You save money and have a hat with your picture on it to boot! Life is way to short to live it this way!
Get a grip!

He has had his irons for two years, but he likes to buy a new driver, hybrid or other kind of clubs to have different options too. If you knew anything about golf you would know that the type of clubs you use impact the type of drive you get, different clubs do different things for you. Even if he didn't buy one new club he still spends over $1000 a year just on green fees.
If I knew anything about golf ? I play 100+ rounds a year. My handicap is 8. What do you know about golf, little one ?

I never said that teachers in Chambersburg are "poorly" paid. I was making the point that compared to other districts and other states that those areas value their teachers more. Anyone is welcome to go back to college and become a teacher. You are not going to be rich but you can have a good rewarding profession and give back to your community by serving others.

By the way, you must not follow the news or know what is going on in the Chambersburg School District. There have been teachers that have lost their jobs and as teachers retire they are not replaced. All that does is increase the class size which research shows hurts student achievement. Currently there is a hiring freeze and teachers are not being replaced.

So Jake, keep bashing the teachers. A few years ago when Letterkenny was having problems teachers agreed to a 0% pay increase to help the community. No one said thanks and as a matter of fact the Chambersburg, Franklin County employees all received 4%, the district administration all took their raise and state employees all took their raise. So actually, the teachers of Chambersburg have lost pennies in their paychecks and tried to help without anyone caring.

I am sad to see how judgemental people are of other people. My family and I live on a budget. We are a one income home and money is tight. My husband just took a paycut so people wouldn't have to lose their jobs at his work place. However, just because two people have jobs do we not think we can learn from them. I loved the article! My husband and I are going to try the envelope system (we had heard about it before) to make sure we don't overspend. We don't have cable, cell phones and a lot of other "normal" things so that we can go on a summer vacation each year. I cook from scratch to save money...does this make me "tight"? No I am just creative with my money. My kids love cooking and baking with me (made bagels this morning) They don't know (yet) that only watching DVD's on our tv isn't normal.

Rachel I am proud of you for not overspending like most americans but choosing to live within your means. We may not be in the same situation financially however we are both choosing to do something better and that is to be responsible with what we have! Thanks for your encouragement

I joined the MOMS Club and certainly didn't find it to be like that...maybe you weren't in the one she is in. I never felt like I had to keep up with anyone and there were many from different backgrounds. Just because you had a bad experience doesn't mean everyone else will

But I thought teachers weren't in it for the money? If someone retires and is not replaced, nobody has lost a job! A 0% increase doesn't mean you've lost anything in your paycheck.

That's funny....grosses you out even if the consignment clothes are washed. So do you think the forks you use in restaurants are new just for you? Nope, they are washed. But maybe you use your hands to eat because the forks are used and using them would be just too gross?
my two cents wrote:
I'm sorry, but the idea of wearing clothes from a second hand shop just kind grosses me out, you never know who wore it first, I don't care if it was washed or not. I'd rather shell out the extra money for clothes that I'm the first owner on.
I also think it's funny how the couple says how frugal they are yet at the end it mentions the hubby taking golf trips, as a 'golf widow' I can tell you that the equipment and days on the green aren't cheap.

Maybe you all missed the point...she's always been frugal. The fact that they know how to live within their means tells you that they aren't living paycheck to paycheck. Why begrudge them that, or a vacation? Read the article, glean what you can from it (shop consignment); and if you need to sacrifice something (no HDTV or gaming system, perhaps?) so you have extra pocket money, then do so but to begrudge them a vacation is uncalled for.
I liked the article...it inspires me to find ways to cut corners.
I agree with you 100%. Color your own hair and get your kids books instead of video games. She's not bashing other people for spending money, just using good sense about the way they spend their money. Good for her! Additionally, their children are some of the nicest you could ever hope to meet and so are she and her husband.

Oh let me guess, he's aspiring to be another Tiger Woods? Maybe your husband really uses golf as an excuse to get away from his overbearing, self-centered wife?

Loved the article. I shop thrift stores. The clothes there are just clothes that other people have outgrown. Smart choices...instead of paying $20 for a shirt I get it for $2-$3. I take it home and wash it in soap and HOT water. My children never know the difference! I get Aeropostle, Gap, Old Navy all the name brand stuff! They don't have a clue! I want to pad my pockets not the retail dept stores! The $ I saved from going to the thrift store..I can use somewhere else...food, out with friends, fun!

I have a philosophy in life....

Do what you gotta do so you can do what you wanna do!

Daily Horoscope for December 11

Capricorn

You're dashing around in several directions at once today because you're gripped by the burning desire to get things done. You're in a tearing hurry, and the problem is that this could make you rather irritable if things don't go the way you want or people don't jump to it. You might also be feeling angry with a friend, even if you can't put your finger on what's wrong.
