I had something wrong with the iPod, so I restored it to original settings. I could not put songs back on it, because when syncing the "Required file could not be found." I tried to restore the iPod again, and this failed "due to an unknown error (1418).
Any ideas? Is there anywhere I can reinstall the software without paying too much (free is best, especially if I'm not sure it will work).

I have exactly the same problem and am desperate to sort it out. When I try and sync (manually, because my iPod has never been able to sync automatically), it does a few tunes and then freezes and says "iPod cannot sync..file not found". I've tried to restore my iPod but it comes up with error 1418...
Please, please, anyone know what to do. I can't live without my iPod and podcasts...

i have the same problem. on the apple website (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html... ) it says to copy and run a batch file but that didnt work for me. i have also noticed that the ipod is messing up my other usb devices. i have a usb wireless receiver that dosent work reliably when the ipod is plugged in. i think it is a hardware issue.

That is usually a file corruption.
The song will have a exclamation beside it just uncheck that song and see if it will work then.
I have the same problem..that has usually always worked for me but today i am having the sam problem and have restored my ipod 2 times today. So im now going to re-install itunes. Hopefully it works!=]
good luck everyone.

Try to deleted the file "ipod photo cache" and resync the photo file fixed my problem in iPhone. I would think the problem is similar for the ipod!
Good Luck to all!

i just had this same thing happen. I disconnected for the USB hub, and connected to a different USB port (one of the ports off the motherboard) and that resolved the issue.

The reason you got the error message is your ipod locked up and you lost the conection to the usb buss this is a pain you have to reset your ipod mine is a classic and I have to push the middle button and the menu button at the same time to reset it you have to hold it for a few seconds you will not loose any songs then push the middle button and the lower buttom to put it in the disk mode it works for me when I loose my syn in I-tunes

when the ipod is pluggged into the usb port you got the error with, reset ipod while connected//menu and middle button// and then swap ports, re check the playlist \ library your synching for songs with an exclamation mark , remove them!

I've reinstalled I-Tunes and also restored the I-Pod and I keep getting the same error. However, when I try putting the files on a memory card instead, I still get an error. I think it might be in the files we're trying to load onto our devices.

That same thing JUST happened to me after spending all night up-dating my iTunes. I freaked out and was frustrated that I would have to re-install iTunes...

I'm not a very "computer-y" person so I dont know if this is just my computer or not, but just before I re-installed iTunes I noticed that my external harddrive and also another USB cord was plugged into the back of my computer.

I unplugged the USB and turned off my external harddrive, and the message disappeared and my iPod synced fine!

Hope that helps.

This is a simple error especially for ipod classics. to fix it, simply plug your usb into another power outlet in your computer. usually, it cannot get enough power from the usb you are using.
