People Turning To Pawn Shops To Fill Gaps Between Paychecks - N...

Many if not all of these pawned items are stolen property.

I feel so sorry for these people. You get nowhere near the value of what you are pawning. The best you can hope for is to retrieve the item and keep pawning it every 2 weeks or so. The pawnshop gets to know you & starts to give you a little more each time, as they know you will come back. My late husband, who was not good with money, went the pawnshop route for several years. Some of his gifts to me where “lost” when he did not have them money to get them back. No hard feelings just saying this is a risky way to get money.

Pawning things is hard, giving up items for a tenth or even less of their value is awful if as the pawn shop owner says the people need it to buy food or gas. I had to do these things once and what a terrible thing it was. I have risen to better times, but I remember to even buy a wardrobe or a few things I had to go to loan companies. Things were tight and I feel for anyone caught in a tight job market or who is unable to get a higher paying job. I do not feel for the druggies, drunks, and lazy, but all struggling workers are not in this class.

Not all items are stolen. If you were a little more educated about what a pawnshop is about then you would know that. Stolen items are sometimes brought in but they are also recovered and given back to the rightful owners. If it wasn't for pawnshops then you would never get back your items if someone stole them from you!!

You have to understand that pawnshops only can give so much in order to make enough back to stay in business. Most of the time you get between a fourth or a third of the value for a loan. You people really need to get educated before assuming things that you don't really understand.

More educated? What are your talking about? It is a well known fact that pawn shops take stolen goods all the time. And only if the stolen goods are reported and researched in suspected pawn shop records by a detective/MPD may the items be returned to a victom. |

Wouldn't you rather a pawnshop take it and be able to recover your item then have the person just sell it on the street and never see it again??? Pawnshops have to send over reports everyday to the pawn unit so that if anything is stolen it can be recovered. Pawnshops also hold items for 30 days just for that reason. If something is stolen then it should be reported.

Yes very much so thanks. |

The economy is also going to cause those to start stealing more from innocent victim's, you will have robberies, homes getting broken into, offices getting broken into.

Pawnshops suck...they have TVs from the '70s and half their stuff doesn't even work. I got ripped off by the pawnshop in college park. If that is your store, I should kick your a$$. |

I like pawnshops, you can purchase good products at a cheaper price, plus you can get rid of your unwanted crap and possibly turn a profit. I've always had a good experience with pawn shops.

Not all pawn shop are like that. I used to work for a pawn shop and we would check every idem, every button to make sure it worked. Now I'm not saying the product would last forever but there is a saying "you get what you pay for" |

Not all pawnshops are like that and no that is not where i work!!

Really sad that people are having to pawn stuff just to pay utility bills, isn't it? Makes you wonder where the country is headed... On the same lines, I guess more and more people are going for those so-called 'payday loans.' They aren't legal in Maryland, but a lot of people get them over the internet or go to DC or VA. I would urge people to STAY AWAY from those types of loans; it's very, very easy to get caught up in a cycle where you 2 or 3 or more and are using your whole paycheck to pay extension fees each week.

Which will lead to more stealing to get more things pawned for more money for food and gas. It is a vicious circle!@!

Well known fact?? From where? National STATISTICS show that only 1/10 of 1% of stolen goods ever wind up in a pawn shop. And those are discovered ONLY because pawn shops are REQUIRED to report EVEREYTHING to local law enforcement (unlike other venues, like eBay, Craigs List, Swap Meets, etc.) Get YOUR fact straight. |

Don't generalize--we have a clean shop w/modern merchandise, and we even give a warranty! |

How do you expect normal hardworking families to afford the rising cost of gas, food, power and medical expenses? Everything is going up except pay. Living on our moderate income in the last year has been very difficult. When we bought our home we lived off a budget every month and did very well for 10 years but this last year even though its the same income we are having to cut out alot of things such as sports for our kids, cell phones and our family vacation we take every year. So if we are just getting by I can't imagine how hard it is on a lower income family.
