This is a pathetic attempt at inconveniencing a population that is majoritively very law- abiding and one eager to develop and progress both economically and socially.

By limiting the ability of thousands and thousands of civilians to access a service that the rest of the world enjoys freely, takes for granted and one that is affordable, I feel the Indian government should be very very embarrassed! What are you guys doing? Waht were you thinking of!

Will they now disable pre-paid contracts in other parts of India where terrorism/unrest is an issue?

This knee-jerk response by the government to contain what is now a world-wide issue (terrorism) in this manner is emabrassing and most Indians will be appalled to hear that J&K has been targetted in this manner.

Surely the 'brains' could have proposed something more sensible and practical because let's face it ... "where there's a will, there's a way" and if someone is hell bent to hide their tracks and their identity then they will find a way to easily clone an identity that permits them to acquire a mobile ... even on a contract basis.

Come on Indian government make us feel prouder and rethink what you have done. Please wake up and find a better way to address this issue. Please, please allow the honest, hard working civilians of J&K to live and enjoy basic facilities!

dear staytrue,
you have sent some personal observations on the issue of ban on pre paid mobile. can you suggest a better alternative. i mean to say, how the security aspect and low cost communication facility can go hand by hand.

Anti-India protests, strike in Srinagar

Srinagar, December 11 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, complete strike, marked with anti-India demonstrations, is being observed, today, in Srinagar district on the seventh phase of protests against the illegal occupation of Kashmiris’ private land by Indian troops.

Veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, gave call for the protests in the district.

The occupation authorities have imposed section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code and deployed a large number of Indian police personnel in the whole district to prevent people from holding peaceful protest demonstrations.

On the other hand, forceful anti-India protest demonstrations are being held in the city after the troops shot at and critically injured an 8th class student, Faizan Ahmad at Maisuma locality, today. Pitched battles are being witnessed between the demonstrators and Indian police, who have been using brute force to break the demonstrations.

Meanwhile, Indian troops and policemen have been deployed in strength and all roads around the Khankah-e-Mualla area, where Syed Ali Gilani is scheduled to address a gathering, have been sealed.

Indian troops martyr 3 including girl in IHK
162 troopers commit suicide since Jan 2007

Srinagar, December 14 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, Indian troops, in their fresh acts of state terrorism, martyred three innocent Kashmiris including a girl in Doda and Kulgam areas.

The troops martyred two youth at Gandoh in Doda during a siege and search operation while a nine-year-old girl was deliberately hit and crushed to death by a speedy vehicle of Indian army in Frisal at Kulgam.

People took to streets in the area and held a forceful anti-India demonstration against the killing of the girl.

On the other hand, two troopers of Indian Central Reserve Police Force committed suicide at Batamaloo and Soura in Srinagar, raising the number of such deaths amongst the troops to 162 since January 2007.

Addressing a function in Sopore town, today, the speakers including senior APHC leader, Shabbir Ahmed Shah reiterated that Kashmiris were determined to continue their struggle for right to self-determination to its logical end. The function was organised to pay rich tributes to prominent Kashmiri liberation leader and founder of Mahaz-e-Azadi, Sufi Muhammad Akbar on his death anniversary.

The Jammu and Kashmir Mahaz-e-Azadi Patron, Mohammad Azam Inqilabi in a statement said that services of Sufi Muhammad Akbar for the ongoing liberation struggle would always be remembered. The JKLF-R also held a function in Srinagar to commemorate the death anniversary of the leader.

Meanwhile, four persons are feared dead in an avalanche at Kanzalwan in Gurez.»
