Sometimes the police must make comunications which cannot be transmitted over the radio or they must use the phone for other law enforcement purposes. That is why on-duty law enforcement and fire personnel are exempt from the law. Read it before you throw blame. Take responsibility for your actions and you shouldn't have any problems.

Ok so police are exempt. Then why when a friend of mine pulled up next to a police cruiser with the officer on his cell phone and looked him straight in the eye, he pulled over and stayed on the phone? Also I work across the street from a police station and see them run the stop signs every single day - are they exempt from that too? They hand out thousands of tickets for doing exactly what they themselves do. Law enforcement personnel are the worst examples for the youth of today.

I see more people of a certain persuasion flaunting the law than any other group. Guess they figure that the law doesn't apply to them.

It's not the fact that a hand is holding a phone to the ear that is dangerous. It is the fact that the mind is pre-occupied and not concentrating on driving.

One problem I see with the new law is that public officials (city workers, etc) are also violating the law, and dare I say even the ones that are sworn to enforce the law. I recently witnessed a local law enforcement officer driving around in a marked police car off duty talking on her cell phone. Get with the program folks. You have to enforce the law. Put your cell phones down and other will follow. When we see you using your cell phone while driving, most feel that they can get a way with it too. Monkey see, Monkey doo.

Cops & Fire slugs are "special". They don't obey laws anyway. Thats why they have a "brass pass" or get "county courtesy".

Watch that truck or SUV doing stupid stuff front of you, when you get close, you'll see the little fire hat decal on the back. That's to tell the cops that the vehicle belongs to a "fire fighter", or bed partner there of, and that they are immune to any traffic laws.

It's unsafe to watch TV in your car, unless you have an MDT in front of you, then you can drive and type all you want. Not to worry, if there's an accident, you won't have to pay, its just tax payer money.

Observation: I concur with the article: I saw almost nobody celldriving in July, but it appears to be back to pre-ban levels now.
If we're going to enforce vehicle & traffic regs, I would first like to see more licensed vehicles - so many drive around here without tags. If I gotta pay, ever one else should too - maybe that will help the budget crisis too!
Most states stop and impound unlicensed vehicles with steep fines to get them out of hock.

"Law enforcement personnel are the worst examples for the youth of today." ???? Seriously? That's a bold statement. I can think of far worse examples for the youth of today: gangs, thieves, rapists, pedophiles...All the people that your worst example are there to protect us from.

I just don't get it - you can get headsets free through the state program, so why risk getting a ticket that can end up costing you over $100 when court fees are included???

I agree with you. Police officers put their lights on to go through red lights as well. They are a rotten examples of how NOT to follow the laws!!!

What is the difference between holding a cell phone in your hand and holding anything else in your hand other than the steering wheel while driving? Why is it not illegal to have a sandwich, makeup, coffee, writing instrument, navigation tool, beverage, roadmap, wallet, eyeglasses, and so on and so on.....?

This is so true. When on the phone, our mind's eye is visualizing the person that we are speaking to, and not consiously focusing on the road. It really has nothing to do with the hands...

Police officers are exempt from the law if they are using their cellphone during their course of employment. Good job of trying to make excuses and rediculous arguments instead of being a responsible person and obeying the law!

Amazing. Ever think that the destination where the officer is going is probably semi or very important? Like maybe to help someone? Not to worry, hopefully if you ever need the police, they will obey every law and get there when they get there. Out society today loves to make excuses and blame others for their lack of responsibility. And shocking that you would try the old stand by of blaming the police and trying to accuse them of doing something you don't like. Amazing. Just be responsible, obey the law and worry about yourself.

You are correct. Never question authority. Do as you're told. Big Brother is your friend. All pigs are created equal, but some pigs are more equal than others.

Make sure you share that belief the next time you see a cop tough guy. Anyone can be tough at home on their computer, step it up and use your freedom of speech to let them know what you think. Ofcouse, you don't have the juevos for that!
