Invented it? Meyer was running that offense long before he came to UF. I'd say Meyer mastered it as well. What has Rodriguez ever won with it? Michigan sure ran it well last year?

I hope the nfl wont get too carried away with this spread offense. I'm old school! I like 4 yards and a cloud a dust, then hit cha with the bomb when you least expect it! Now thats football! Too much of this pass happy protect the qb stuff is a little too fru fru for me.

Also give credit to Houston Nutt for popularizing the Wild Cat, Wild Hog, Wild Rebel, Wild Fish, Wild Insert Your Team Mascot.

Play calling in the NFL is so predictable, it's about time some NFL teams start adding new formations and play calling.

The spread was invented back in the '50s, long before Meyer or Rodriguez started using it.

The "spread" isn't as easily defined as "off tackle" -
at least as Meyer runs his offense. Meyer has said repeatedly that his offense is based on his personnel, and he adapts his scheme to fit his personnel. If he weren't able to do that, then he wouldn't have been able to win a national title with a drop back QB like Chris Leak. And Meyer will do the same tweaking for Brantley after Tebow graduates. Meyer's offense is more adaptable than simply attending a seminar on the "spread" - and that's what makes it so effective.

I agree.

All I'm saying is that the spread, and numerous variations of it, have been in use for over 50 years. Hell, Bear Bryant used his own version of the spread! It didn't start with Rodriguez or Meyers, and won't end with them.

No doubt, TMD. Not all fans may realize that, but you're right. But I think Meyer is honest about his system's roots in single wing, option, etc. and his eagerness to incorporate new wrinkles that coaches come up with at other schools. Any good defensive coordinator can come up with an effective scheme against an offense that doesn't evolve.

Exactly. That's what makes it so difficult to slow Florida down. Take it from me, and I'm a huge tOSU alum and fan. With the right athletes, that @#$%&! spread causes all kinds of matchup problems!

That really is unfortunate considering how well they have done in college. Thank god it takes a lot more than WRs to win football games.... We've had our share of NFL contributors at plenty of other positions though.

Actually, the spread was invented about 100 years ago -- as the story explains.

With Tebow, the greatest college qb ever, it really doesn't matter what offense is used! He's fantastic.

Remind me how many championships Peyton Manning and Tom Brady won in college?? If Manning and Brady had better TEAMMATES & COACHES, they probably would have won as many championships in college as they did in the NFL.

Personally, I think it's great when college football TEAMS can win championships with players who are not NFL Hall of Fame caliber.

Brady and Manning may not have won college championships, but they did win Super Bowls as STARTING QB's.

What has this list of NFL underachievers accomplished:

Chris Weinke, Charlie Ward, Shane Mathews, Terry Dean, Danny Wuerffel, Noah Brindise, Doug Johnson, Jesse Palmer, Rex Grossman
Chris Leak.

Do an episode of where are they now, I need a laugh.
