I love my Ravens, but our 2005 draft was less than stellar as well.

1. Clayton
2. D. Cody
3. A. Terry (we traded-up to get him)
4. J. Brown (he took awhile to develop,but is now a stud)
5. Justin Greene
6. Derrick Anderson ( the one that got away)

Geez I wish we had hired Marvelous Marvin as our coach...

A similar argument about how a draft has its greatest impact three years down the road could be made about the Ravens 2004 draft and how it clobbered us in 2007 where we went 5-11. Here's who we drafted in 2004:

2 DT Dwan Edwards (disappointing backup player)
3 WR Devard Darling (released by the Ravens)
5 LB Roderick Green (released by the Ravens)
6 QB Josh Harris (out of the NFL)
6 WR Clarence Moore (out of the NFL)
7 WR Derek Abney (out of the NFL)
7 OL Brian Rimpf (out of the NFL)

We got almost nothing out of this draft, and we sure felt that loss in 2007.

Nothing wrong with the talent of the players that the Bengals selected...the players just were immature and irresponsible. Some fault lies with the Bengals for selecting them but most of the fault lies with the individual players themselves. A huge "Bravo" to Roger Goodell for setting standards of behavior in the NFL. Pollack was a wonderful person who had a tragic injury that ended his short career. Thurman and Henry are/were head cases who never realized what a good deal they had. Those two blew potential million dollar careers. Very sad.

Great point Charles. Of course you should add Boller to the list b/c we technically used our first pick to draft him the year before.

Not that I care a whit about the Bengals, but you can't fault a guy or for fracturing his neck or blame the Bengals for drafting him.

I liked your comparison of Ocho STINKO and Steve McQueen's character in The Great Escape, though.

I agree with some of the others that our drafts as of late have been less than stellar. As a Ravens fan, I can only be optimistic about this year's draft, although I think we may have been able to get some of our picks for less than what we gave up.

Here's hoping that the new coaching staff will be able to optimize our team's talent; also that we don't get any more major injuries!

Well guys even though they say the bengals draft was a bust vegas still says that cinn will win more games then the ravens this year.That in itself doesn't say to much for the RAVEN"S.

Hasn't stopped the Bengals from dominating Baltimore for the last 4 years. What is it now? 6 of 7?

You beat me to it. I came on to point out Edwards and Darling. Still, I'm glad you got here first because I was unaware that the rest of the draft was so pathetic.

And yes, as someone pointed out, it's fair to add Boller to the list, which makes it even worse.

Check out the ravens draft of 2004. Dwan Edwards is the only remaining player and is widely regarded to be a bust.

the 2005 draft was not nearly as bad as 2004. Clayton, Terry, Brown are all starters. Brown should be a probowler. Clayton if he stays healthy is a 60 - 70 catch guy. The 2004 draft sucked. Edwards is at best average and the rest of the draft is gone. But in general we do a good job of drafting. No one hits on all their drafts. You hope on balance that your hits outnumber your misses and that your high draft picks become good to very good players. If you look over the history of the Ravens that is about what happens. And to the Bengals fan that jumped on - let me put this in simple English since I can't expect formal thought from you - please come back after you win a playoff game or two, or a superbowl or a couple of AFC North titles. Because in the entire history of your "storied" franchise, you have the distinction of being one bottom 4 or 5 teams in the history of the NFL and that includes such notables as the Tampa Bay Bucs in their early days, and the New Orleans Aint's of the Archie Manning days. Win something and then come back and beat your chest. Otherwise, go crawl back into the hole that you call a city and play footsie with the Clown fans on the mistake by the lake.

Will many more 'gifted' but also character- lacking athletes coming out of college, it's essential, due to the huge investment, that new ways are used to find the individuals that can overcome the character flaws once they cash the big check.
I think the biggest thing that shows those who can, is their personal feelings about the game itself. Do they love the game? Do they love to compete? How team orientated are they? How driven are they to be the best and why? Do they feel a responsability to their teammates as to what they accomplish or fail to?
Backround information needs to be able to accurately accertain the answers to these questions.

You're right, it doesn't look good. Let's look at the draft choices immediately following Cincy's picks. Instead of Pollack, the Bengals could have had Erasmus James, Alex Barron, Marcus Spears, Matt Jones, or Mark Clayton. The best pick in round one after that was Heath Miller.

Instead of Odell Thurman in round two, the Bengals could have picked Marcus Johnson, Ronald Bartell, Nick Collins, Khalif Barnes or Dan Cody. In round three, the Bengals DID pass on Ellis Hobbs, but drafted Henry instead of David Greene, Kevin Everett, Scott Starks, or Sione Pouha.

My point is I think you have to have a little perspective when it comes to these three picks. Sure, several years later they didn't work out. But save for a player here or a player there, a bunch of picks around them look pretty bad too.
