Gould's field goal in OT lifts Bears over Saints

Full story: The Associated Press

Robbie Gould raced over to his tee on the Chicago Bears sideline after the New Orleans Saints tried to ice him with a timeout in overtime Thursday night. After a practice kick, Gould walked back onto the field and booted the Saints out of Soldier Field with another devastating loss. He connected from 35 yards on Chicago's first possession of overtime, lifting the Bears to a 27-24 victory that boosted their playoff hopes. 'I like it,' Gould said. 'I get an opportunity to get a warmup kick in but also see and judge exactly how the wind is blowing. For me, I wish every coach would do that and give me the opportunity. They say ice, but I don't think it really works.'

Icing a kicker from 45 or more yards out might have some value, but the winning kick last night was a chip shot. Kickers are expected to make them every time. All Payton did was delay the inevitable.
It was good to see the Bears fight their way back into that game. When are league officials going to find a way to describe passes that bounce off of receivers into the defense something other than interceptions? It's one thing to throw the ball to the other team, but something else entirely when the receiver has his hands on it and deflects it to a defender.
The offensive line continues to look bad-to-marginal, the defense cannot get to the opposing QB, and the offensive play-calling continues to be less than inspiring.
If the Bears manage to make the playoffs, they will be a good tune-up for whichever genuine contender they play in the first round.

To win ,you need decent play from your QB, your offensive line and your secondary, if you are missing either one of these components you will suck, everything else can be pretty much mediocre but these three have to be good, also you need a defensive coordinator who sets his scheme around his personnel and not one who ask his personnel to run his scheme .....Time to focus on the Hornets...PEACE!!!

you couldnt be more wrong. if you have a good running offense and an ok passing game then you can keep the other teams offense on the sideline. if you have a good run defense then you force them into long third downs and it is harder to throw the ball than it is to run it, especially in cold weather. and you really cant control the clock if you are throwing the ball, because of incomplete passes.

The glaring problem with the Bears is that neither the defensive nor the offensive line are up to NFL standards.
The O-line doesn't give Orton any time to find a receiver, causing hurried passes. The O-line also is pi$$-poor at run blocking. Forte makes most of his yardage on his own.
The D-line consistently does not get to the passer, allowing all sorts of mayhem in the secondary.
We can sit around and bitch about offensive and defensive coordinators, but they are not out on the field.
It's time to stop looking for quarterbacks and start fixing the line problems.

Without a good offensive line you will not have a good running game nor a good passing game (Lions), without a good QB, defenses just stack the box and not even focus on the pass (Raiders), and without a secondary your defense will never get off the feild (Bengals), I shouldn't have to explain this.

i never disagreed about needing to have a good o-line to have a good running game or passing game. but just because you dont have a passing game dont mean you cant rub the ball and do it effectively which was proven by the vikings last season with adrian peterson and chester taylor. opposing teams stacked the box everytime to stop them and still couldnt. hell, that running game and run defense is what got them a .500 record. if they would of just had a decent passing game and a good pass rusher in 07', then they would of been in the playoffs easy and super bowl contenders.

The interference call in the overtime was a joke! The refs must have been late for their flight!
Maybe it was just payback for the non-call when Olsen got mugged in the end zone.

Dude, I said you have to have descent play from your QB, O-Line, and secondary , if you are lacking any one of these then your team will suck. The Vikings had a O-Line , a secondary , but no QB so they ended 8-8 lacking that 1 component to their team. Drew Brees will almost have 5000 yards ,Saints have a O-line , a QB, They can also stop the run, But they do not have a secondary, so they're probably looking at 8-8 also, The Broncos proved with Mike Bell and Reuban Droughnes that average joe can run behind a good O-line, And you can stick your corners on an island and play 9 in the box to stop the run if you have a good secondary. You can run effectively but that doesn't translate to wins, OJ ran for 2000 yards and Buffalo did not make the playoffs when he did it. Something was missing!!!! it wasn't the running game.

first of all the vikings did not have a good secondary in the 07' season because they had no pass rush like they do now and it showed. antoine winfeild is one of the best corners in the league and teams still threw on them. the players who were always getting beat were cedric griffin and dwight smith which is why smith has been replaced by madieu williams this season. if you have a good running game then you can control the clock and keep the other teams offense on the sideline. if you throw the ball a lot, then you cannot do that because of incomplete passes. also if you can stop the running game, then you can force other teams into long third downs situations.

Last year I saw Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor run all over the Colts, and control the clock and time of possesion when Bob Sanders was hurt, Colts and Manning pulled it out in the end. Jags won every statistcal category but the final score. This year, Saints at Cheifs, 4th and 3 Cheifs ball, Saints give up 42 yards, Dude, if your team is 2-14, 3-13 or like 4-12, something is not clicking on offence, if you go 7-9, 8-8, 9-7 your probably missing 1 component on your defence, Most likely a secondary. The only exception I have seen to this is the '99 Rams 9Who noone could stop)

Saints held Peterson to 1.9 yards per carry and we still loss the game, Guess why ???? Our dumbass secondary couldn't stop Gus Frerotte and Bernard Berrian. Only 2 runningbacks ran for over 100 yards on the Saints this year and we are at the bottom of our division,.... You guessed it.... our bullshit secondary. Brees threw over 4,300 yards and was on pace to shatter Dan Marino's yardage mark and we still didn't make the playoffs....Guess why ???(You fill in the blank) this is what lacking a secondary can do to your team...We stop the run, We moved the ball, And teams dissected our secondary like crazy.

Daily Horoscope for December 19

Taurus

Someone is very short-tempered, and they're liable to fly off the handle at a moment's notice. Maybe they're feeling vulnerable in some way or are desperately trying to defend what they see as their territory. Be sensitive to this and don't goad them into being even more irritable or upset than they are already. Frankly, it's just not worth it.
