Contract talks begin with J. Long, Gholston

Full story: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Apparently content to keep the No. 1 overall pick, the Dolphins have begun discussing contract parameters with at least two players on their short list of candidates to become the draft's top selection.

I heard about the talks with Jake long this afternoon. Miami Herald only reported the talks with jake, but failed to mention talks with Gholston. I prefer Jake long, and he will stabalize the o-line. I hope they can sign him. Good idea trying to sign him 1st.

JAKE LONG, BABY!

2 of the first 3 picks should be O line. Other first day picks should be QB and D-Line (assuming they can get get value at their picks without reaching too far.) Day 2, lets go DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE. I want the Dolphins to be able to smash people in the mouth on BOTH sides of the ball this year... no more getting manhandled when the other team has a 3rd and 2. Last year was pathetic.

Anybody think we'll see another shocker like last year? "And with the first pick of the 2008 NFL draft, the Miami Dolphins select... Beau Bell, LB, UNLV."
Don't get me wrong... I Like the Ginn pick now... but my jaw dropped when You Know Who wasn't picked.

Plans B and C...and a head fake. Chris Long's agent probably playing hardball after 90% of mocks have him NUMERO UNO. So...Tuna engages Tom Condon (King Dick) RE: Jake Long. But, I don't see it (he's a lesser Joe Thomas) or certainly not Gholston -- a beast but who clearly takes plays off in the film.

Whoever the pick is, get him signed before the draft. That way, he's in camp from Day 1, and no holdout nonsense. Let the other 31 teams mess around with the slotting.

Bill....Be a maverick....Just turn the card in...don't pick anyone. Then watch the fun begin. Everyone will freak out. There may be a run on a player or two...Then turn in the card quick for the player you want not the one you feel you have to take.. NO ONE in this draft is worth over 70 million..NO ONE...

Until I see them draft a normal pick, I am still prepared to be shocked, disappointed, enraged, etc. Ted Freaking Ginn?!? Jason Feaking Allen?!? Ronnie Freaking Brown (as the overall number 2 pick)?!?

I don't understand why C. Long was touted to be the Dolphins pick by so many for so long. Gholston would be just as dumb. Neither would have a place on the team as they stand right now. Porter and Twinkle Toes Taylor are the starting OLBS in the 3-4 (with lots of cap room tied up between them), and and both are too small to play DE in a 3-4 in the NFL, where most 3-4 DEs are really just tall, fast DTs that go in the 6-5 300lb range ala Richard Seymour. We literally have a hole at OT. We HAVE to take the best OT in the draft. The drop off after the first round OTs (Clady,Williams, Otah even Cherilus) go is very significant. I forecast the second round to go best ILB and best OG available, then round 3 look at CB. From then on look for depth, and we can find a QB in next years class.

Like I said in my post yesterday, if we do not let time expire, and the RAMs do not jump up 1 spot, we are drafting Jake Long. All you egg heads that had your hopes up for a QB or DE, take a look at the last 5 years of our whole O-line getting beat in every which way you can. There are dozens of more reasons to improve our line than there are reasons to improve our D. Chris Long is good, but there are other DE's just as good as him. Gholston's might want less money than Long, and therefore they might just work something out before the draft, and then we can go after an OT with the 32nd pick, but people who are crying for a DE, just remember, we will have JT, Ferguson, Starks, and probably a 2nd rounder starting on defense. That is not the point though, think about how Bill won all those superbowls of the 80s, steady running game- eat the clock, score in the red zone, and play solid(not great defense.) Every defense in this league gets better when teams can control the ball and score. The exception is NE, but since they can pretty much score at will, they don't need a defense, but I think their luck is going to run out this year, every year teams see what they do, and when the Giants game planned, it was run, run, run, short pass, and blitz on defense. If Miami builds the same type of team as Dallas did, we can score in the red zone, then we have it made, and we will be competitive again. Just my two cents.

If we talke Jake Long #1 I dont care what else we do, I will be happy.

It ALL starts on the line.
*OL makes running game better
*Running game makes QB better
*QB better makes WR better

Add it all up and a better offence makes the defence better by being on the field less.

They have already taken care of the special teams.

OL is the foundation of EVERY good team.

PLEASE PLEASE SIGN JAKE LONG!!!!!

I agree with your post up until the 3rd round. I think the Dolphins would have to consider picking up a tight end in the third round. This should depend on who is still available. The 4th round could be used to address CB. How much depth there is for CB and TE should determine which position is picked earlier. Parcells likes to have a strong pass catching TE.

My two cents.
Bill Pacells wants to leave his mark early.
Rd.1 Chris Long or Gholston

Rd.2 Best OT Otah, Cherilus, Baker, or Collins.

Rd.3 TE Martellus Barnett

Rd.4 Kevin Smith, Dre Moore, Devin Thomas or Jordy Nelson

Rd.5 LB Geno Hayes, Jon Goff, Shawn Crable

Rd.6 DT or OG Bryant, Cousins, Greco or Kirk Burton, Adam Kraus

Rd.6 LB or Corner Zenon, Terrel,

Rd.7 Rec.or S. Arrington, Demps, Steltz,Tom Z.

Rd.7 Gary Guyton, A. Rubin Corey Lynch

I think this will be the best DRAFT in a lomg time.

Right, and I remember all those people screaming for Brady Quinn. Anyone seen much of him at all? I mean, after the long holdout? Can you imagine what he would have done here, drafted at that spot?

On the other hand, Ted Ginn seems to be meeting all expectations. With all of the attention to the special teams group that has been paid, I guess that we might start hearing some mouths shut wide open.

I am excited, especially when I read this:

"Jake Long's lone sack of his senior season was to Gholston, who finished his junior season with 14 sacks before entering the draft."

Wow, let's hope these guys have their feet on the ground and will put a lot in the performance side. Guys like this can contribute very well in the first year and have a serious effect. I especially am excited about Jake Long. Not a glamorous pick, but oh, so needed.

I think Jake is their man. 2 Sacks and 2 penalties over a 4 year collegiate career not to mention he benched 225lbs 37 times at the combine (most reps of any prospect). Plus he fills their biggest need, LT.

Gholston is better than Chris (Howie) Long (Jr.) and fits the Dolphins 3-4 scheme as an DE/OLB. But a DE/OLB is not the teams' greatest need.

We as Phans have all seen solid defenses coupled with an offense that was unable to put points on the board for too long. It's time the Dolphins made some investments on the offensive side of the ball. Starting with LT and the o-line has to be priority number 1.

Set at running back and Ricky Williams in the same sentence? I gotta go smoke some weed, go to Australia, Canada, and India to study levitation, then I'll think about it.

Jake Long is by far the best choice in the draft for the Dolphins at the #1 pick. This kid is a Beast, he's a leader, very smart, should start right away and if he stays healthy will last on the team at least 10 years.

Daily Horoscope for January 5

Taurus

Everything seems to be getting under your skin at the moment, but this is no excuse to lose your temper, and you know it. Better by far to be discreet and plough on steadily, without looking to the left or right. If you keep your feet on the ground and don't get discouraged, there are definitely fair winds that will blow you along. It's just a question of finding the right balance between confidence and commonsense.
