The Packers got a great return on the money they spent on Robinson, so the excuse they let him go just because they got some unproven new rookies just doesn't add up. Frankly I don't trust Thompson as far as I could throw him,(mainly due to how he drove Favre out of town) so I am suspicious of any move he makes. There was absolutely no reason let Robinson go. Favre was one of the the strongest voices on the team who pushed for keeping Robinson on the roster. With Brett gone, it was only a matter of time before Robinson was cut as well.
