Does Chicago Bears' Kyle Orton have blinders on?

Full story: Chicago Tribune

For a guy so into the environment, Kyle Orton does a good job of showing little concern for the things going on around him.

Orton doesn't have blinders on, but Jerry Angelo sure does! What is he thinking? It's hard to believe the Bears are just over 2 years removed from SBXLI. Instead of looking like a team that will be competing for the NFC North title and a playoff spot, they're starting to look like a team destined for the cellar of the NFL's weakest division. Losing both starting tackles, one of the best safeties in team history, and the only QB in Bears' history not named McMahon to lead the team to the Super Bowl with no apparent need to replace any of them really tells me Angelo is losing his touch. But I don't know that he really knows how to evaluate and draft offensive players. How many offensive players has he drafted that have actually turned out to be worth their hype? Aside from Hester, who doesn't count, he's had two decent offensive draft picks: Greg Olsen in 2007 and Matt Forte in 2008. Look at the busts that he's brought in via the first three rounds of the NFL draft: Benson, A-Train, David Terrell, Garrett Wolfe, Mark Bradley, Terrence Metcalf, Mike Gandy. I'm not counting Marc Colombo because he starts for Dallas and people can bash Rex all they want, but he was still better than all be maybe a couple of QBs the Bears have had since Sid Luckman. I really think Jerry Angelo will work his way out of a job before the Bears make the playoffs again.

Jerry Angelo has nothing to worry about. He will get a pat on the back for not spending the money. As far as I'm concerned the Bears are finished with free agency this year. They will now focus on the draft feeling good about themselves that they squared away the OL and have their QB in Orton while our faithful fanbase continues to sell out Soldier Field and maximizing profits for the McCaskey's.

St. Clair is over 30 and as far as I know has even been mentioned as pro bowl caliber, so his loss doesn't strike me as dire. A worn down Orlando Pace is better than a fresh John St. Clair.

I have to wonder, did St. Clair give the Bears a chance to match? Or did he note that the Bear have made NO attempt to improve themselves this off season; that they have watched 3 quality wide receivers, one of their biggest needs get signed by others without (apparently) even talking to them. Since the Bears appear to be unwilling to make even a token attempt at improving the team, why would St. Clair want to stick around.

I have thought that Angelo has gotten a worse rap than he deserves, but this off season he has performed even worse than his reputation. The draft hasn't even happened yet and I already despair over the prospects of this team for this season. 4-12 here we come. Thank God I'm not a season ticket holder.

Haugh, Rosenbloom--these guys are all the same now...the mouthpiece for the Chicago idiot fan. Keep reading these comments, Haugh--you'll be guaranteed a steady stream of moronic thoughts. The Bears didn't get to the Super Bowl by listening to you lately, or to any of these other fools. So the Bears haven't been to the playoffs in two years. Big deal, that happens sometimes. If they listen to you and these other people, it sure to be a lot longer. You can make this team into something that it is not...

St. Clair was our top free agent priority, gee.......aren't we spoiled.

Maybe Angelo can find a lineman that's been released from someone's practice squad, they're usually cheap.

Haugh, first you take a shot at orton for not being concerned about it, then you smoochie up to jerry angelo, (that must make your mother proud), then you close by seconding ortons statements on things and taking a backhanded shot at angelo. This is confounded garbage even for you. Why don't you write something with a point, for example, yes the bears should get cutler, or no the bears don't need cutler. We're stuck with you and Bernie Lincicome's paper closes. Bernie said more in one sentence, and said it clearly and with wit, than you muster in a week or three. Maybe you are just afraid to upset the same people who were so angry with the things Lincicome would write about them. You know who I mean, the ones that were so angry with the things Mariotti would write about them. Maybe you are just afraid.

If you ask me, St Clair spent most of his time starring at the back of defensive players jerseys as they put pressure on the quarterback. He got burned so much during the games that he probably needed skin grafts afterwards. Why is everybody crying that he is gone? Was he really the best we had?

David, The Bears do not need Jay Cutler. The Bears need leadership from the top. Kyle Orton is good enough believe it or not. Sign offensive lineman nd then draft another. Trade down in the 1st round. The McCaskeys have shown the inability to run a successful football team in terms of wins and losses. I may be done bashing Jerry Angelo, he has his hands tied more than I ever knew. Still, he has made a few bad decisions and bringing in Cutler will be one more.

There are FAR more things the Bears need than to add to the old hat Days of Our Quarterbacks soap opera. Though Cutler would be a nice addition, Kyle has done his thing and far better than Rex.
Key loses in the already weak O-line should be the concern here, and some WR additions as well. Can't run the ball effectively when your O-line gets beat, and defenses don't respect your pass game.

I don't get the title. Orton has a job to do. I'm glad he's not listening to you dumb twits in the media.(Remember what happen to the Bulls and the Kobe rumors. It wasn't productive.) The media just loves to create a soap opera around football. This is the last Bears article I'm reading until week 1. Go Bulls and Hawks!!! Those are the real stories these days!

lol i love that they even lost out on a horrible o linemen because he knew how bad it is here in chicago. I am starting to hate the bears with a passion. They are becoming the worst franchise in town. they dont care abou the fans and teams like the hawks cubs and sox all show that they want to win for themselves and the fans. The bears are being exposed and the crew is starting to rebel. STOP SUPPORTING THE FRANCHISE UNTIL THEY FIRE, SPEND, AND CARE.

IM waiting for them to get a qb so i can just on that band wagon. I wish that they had gotten rex. His play action with AP and deep bombs to berrian would just make the bears look silly.

again class........we see the product of a blue collar city and a franchise that has them thinking they matter to them. If you look closly you will see the hope in its eyes but dont look to long because you just might join the march to another bad season

Kyle should be fixated on being able to stay on the field with the line he might have this season.Lovie should be fixated on turning this candy $$$ defense into something that can hold leads.Jerry is fixated on saving the owners money, which so far he has done very well at.

Putting all their hopes on St. Claire was their big mistake. For heaven's sake, the guy got beat like a red headed stepchild last year! Surely they didn't think that the draft was their back-up plan, did they? With so many holes to fill?

Agree. Great Post. I usually buy a new Jersey every year among other Bears memorabilia for myself or others but this year I'm not buying squat. It's not about winning, it's all about the profit margin. Anywhere from 6-8 wins a year and the McCheapsky's are happy.
