Pompei you are a moron, you just compared 1 round too 6 rounds. If close too 40% of recievers are found in round one, including Andre Johnson, Randy Moss, Larry Fitzgerald, Tory Holt, David Boston, Plaxico Bang my foot Burress, Santana Moss, Reggie Wayne, Javon Walker, Roy Williams, Braylon Edwards, Roddy White, Calvin Johnson.
Basically your saying if the Bears draft a reciever every round 2-7 they will have a better chance of finding a reciever than in round 1 but need to spend 5-6 picks to do it. In round 1 of the draft there is a 40 percent chance to find a reciever, but in each round after that only a 10 percent chance exists and your suggesting the Bears will have better luck finding a reciever in later rounds. Nice, please learn to do a little math before you write anything Dan. I am not saying go reciever with the first pick, but I am really not for the Bears spending 5 picks all on recievers. |

Creighton,
You might want to go back and reread the article. He is not saying what you claim. PS: Don't you think you can disagree with someone without cursing? |

3rd or 4th rounf pick this kid Ramses Barden from Cal Poly ....6.6. 240 4.56 speed ...great hands and just think he already has a hard earned BS Degree from an outstanding acdemic University..A receiver who can not only play but can actually THINK......

I'm sorry, how many rounds are there after the first and before the sixth? What's wrong Pompeii, too busy working on your next Favre-worshipping column to be able to do first-grade math?

It does`nt matter what round they draft a receiver in if they don`t let him get on the field! Remember the all time rec. leader from the SEC? Earl Bennett never even played a down last year and he was a 3rd rd. pick! If he was`nt any better than Booker, Davies or Lloyd then they don`t know how how to draft or utilize players anyway.

How come nobody is talking about Marvin Harrison to the Bears? It's already been a day since the story broke. I would love to see Marvin on the Bears. If there is significant slippage on Harrison, I'm sure Lovie has the inside track via Dungy.

Berrian seemed to work out for the Vikings........

Well, yeah, there's usually a good reason they are free agents and not being resigned with their team. I don't know why that's any secret. A good reason for first round flops is because they go to crappy teams(lions) but wasn't Fitzgerald a very early first rounder?

since when is bobby wade a second tier WR? I bet he would also include marty booker and rashied davis in that category. Those three are all guys who are lucky to be on a team, not second-tier Wr's. Just the Bears excuse for never going after a big-name Wr and thats a big reason why there offense will never get to the next level.

Creighton, do they have elementary schools in Skokie?
|
||||

Or, for all other teams...just pick up almost any receiver the Bears choose to release...i.e., Bobby Engram, Justin Gage, Bobby Wade, Mark Bradley.....even Berrian..
|

Yes they do, 40 recievers taken in the second round from 98 to 07, 5 are currently starters, thats 12.5 percent. I said 10 %, but that was just a educated guess. So 36 percent is about three times better than 12.5 percent. Also in rounds 3,4,5,6,7, the percentage drops. So the first round has far and away the highest success rate. He did say the other rounds were better. He was wrong. Not to mention the calibur of starter greatly drops from round 1. I hope that educated enough for you. |

I didn't curse, I said a another word for dumb that begins with an M, hint sounds like Moe on. Go ahead and type it and see what happens. Read my second post for a break down of round 2. Round 1 has far and away the best success rate for drafting recievers. I know what he is saying but he did say the other rounds were better for getting a reciver. But the only way that is true is if you combine all the rounds. It's that much harder to draft a reciever later than it is earlier. Your chance of getting a starter calibur reciever after round 1 is about 10 percent a round. So you have 1/3 to 1/5 the chance of finding a good reciever depending on the round. Round 1 is better. Please tell me how drafting a gWR later is better if your odds are that much worse. |

much of this article makes good points. two missing points, though:
1) sometimes traded/free agent WRs turn out fantastic. randy moss to new england and terrell owens to philly/dallas (first two years in both places) were productive seasons. 2) drafting WRs means you won't reap the benefits until their 2nd season at best or more commonly their 3rd season but almost never their first season. there are exceptions, of course (eddie royal for denver comes to mind), but generally no. santonio holmes had bad games about 80% of his rookie season. so if you're drafting a WR and counting on him to produce the season you draft him, you're not a savvy GM. |

Berrian plays for Minnesota. All last season as a matter of fact.

so i guess calvin johnson is only so good because he plays for the lions. i always thought that 1331 recieving yards and 12 tds was considered a good year, especially when your qb was dan orlovsky. the guy ran out of his own endzone when being chased by jared allen for god sake. |

This is the dumbest thing ever written.
You're saying you'd pass on receivers like Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson and Santonio Holmes to get receivers like Kevin Curtis, Bernard Berrian, and Antwan Randle el... |
||||
|
seriously.... the best receivers are taken in the first round. all of Angelo's receivers are nothing special, including Berrian. Wow i guess us Bears fans would hate to see well i don't know maybe.......Calvin Johnson, Andre Johnson, Chad Johnson, Torry Holt,T.O., Randy Moss, Fitzgerald......yeah Pompei you have a point here!!! We have Bennett, we don't need ALL PROS IN CHICAGO!!!

Great article; however, historically (Jerry Rice, Lynn Swann) and even in today's NFL (large list) most WR starters come from Round 1. One of the main exceptions to this general trend is the passing attack of New Orleans. Their top producing receivers are Lance Moore (undrafted, Toledo) and Marques Colston (7th round, Hofstra). They made it work, why can't the Bears? Here is the main reason:
NEWS FLASH: The Bears run the football, play defense, and do some stuff of special teams. They are not a passing team. JA and LS have recognized that they need someone to compliment Hester, but that is all that they will do after throwing the return man a $40 million dollar WR bone. There is great value to be found in the draft in the 3rd and 4th round (Louis Murphy or Mohamed Massaqui). The key to this whole situation is coaching and play calling. Former Bears plays do great elsewhere: either other teams coach/develop better, or they have better play callers than Turner. Creighton: I'm surprised that you can spell your last name "1 round too 6 rounds. If close too 40% of recievers .... your saying ... starter calibur reciever". Here's a link for how to spell and even say c-a-l-i-b-e-r http://dictionary.reference.com/search... |
