Over/under on whiney "athletes make too much money" columns until the recession is over. I say we're up for at least 5 more.

Wonderful contrast in perspectives, David: the "many" versus the very, very, breathe-only-rarefied-air "few." Problem is that, sadly, there are still too many from among "the" many who will forego staples in order to pay the absurd fare to watch buffoons like Ocho Dinko does his inane end-zone dances.

One other point to consider:

According to an article in the Sentinel yesterday, the state underemploymnent rate is about 16%(the under employed being people who work part-time jobs, jobs at which they're over qualified, and those who have been out of a job for so long they've all but given up looking for work), so when you take both the unemployment rate & combine it with the under-employment rate, this means we have something like 25% of all Floridians who are either out of work or not working to the fullest extent of their talents. So things are a lot worse than what Mr. Whitley's saying.

Sure, you can choose whatever stats you want to describe the employment situation, but you must compare apples to apples. What is the combined number during good times? There will always be people who are overqualified for their jobs. It's the product of many more people attending college than 30 years ago.

25% seems like a big number, but I'm not sure it's an accurate depiction of the state of our economy.

The jobless might wish they had 85's choice, but they don't have his skill set. It might upset you, but athletes are afforded that choice these days. Right or wrong athletes make a lot of money.

Your article might be better if you pointed out how people are contributing to these absurd salaries, instead of ridiculing one man because you are jealous that he has the ability to turn down a lot of money.
