Miami Dolphins' kick coverage units under scrutiny

Full story: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Coach Tony Sparano nearly lost it following Sunday's 17-15 victory over Oakland when a reporter asked if he'd do something different this week to plug the leaks in the Dolphins ' porous kick coverage units.

Why are special teams being singled out this year? In fact it is somewhat of a tribute to the offense and defense. They have improved a great deal. Sparano has a point. It's the one big run back that is hurting their average. And will eventually be cause for a loss. On the last return for a TD, London took responsibility for getting blocked. He won't want it to happen again. On another big return, I saw about three players simply over run the tackle. As much as these things bother me, the worst thing is getting a touchdown return called back for a penalty that usually has nothing to do with anything. Charlie Anderson should be made to play with handcuffs on. If the penalties can be avoided, the other things will not be quite as bad. The Dolphins are in alot of close games. If they lose a game by 3 points and there is a TD called back for a penalty, and the opposition has a big punt return, I'll look at the penalty first. Stop the penalties first!!!
Dolphins are 6-4...last year at this time, they were 0-10. All things considered, this is one hell of a turn around.
To win this week, the subject above will have to be addressed. They will also need a different game plan. Don't sleep on Belliceks press conferences. Believe me, he will not want to lose this game and they'll be ready. Blitz Casell into oblivion. He's gotten alot better in a short time.

Having good special teams is a depth issue. We all knew going into this season that depth was an issue. Its awesome that the Phins starters are doing a great job, exceeding the expectations of most people and improving every week. During this years draft and FA then we can expect depth to improve. I also beleive the players we have now on special teams coverage will get better. They are certainly not having these issues due to lack of effort.

Stats don't lie that's for sure and being last or next to it is not something to proud about. But it seems to me that no team covers punts and kickoffs as well as in the past. Every team seems to have problems, and it's been that way for a few years now.

Look at the draft for example teams are picking players in the early rounds for there punt and kickoff return ability, hoping they can break into the line up in a few years. Ted Ginn was one of them. A first round return guy that's crazy, but that's a fact

With the importance the NFL put on special teams in the past, it seems they were still missing the boat. Because many more big plays are coming from the return guys than in the past.

Bess is not the answer returning kicks. Too slow. Ginn needs to return EVERY kick period.
We need to be "at least as good" as who we play on special teams and we're not there yet. Not by a long shot.
I don't care about a couple of good plays when you give up TD's too often.
Maybe Parcells should coach special teams for the rest of the season to get the best from them. Not sure the current coach is getting this.

L.Izzo said it it best;
to excel on special teams, having 22 battering rams charging at one another, the side that win the one on one battles wether your on retun or defendiing the punt or kick return, will come out on top.

Maybe the title should have been:

"Miami Dolphins' Kick Coverage Units FACING MUTINY"

Sparano does have a point about the numbers being skewed by a one or two long returns. Trouble is, if they don't get it fixed, it's going to end up skewing some other, more important numbers if you get my drift. And at that point, no one's going to want to listen to explanations revolving around statistical analysis.

What makes you think BP would want to coach special teams? That is not even his area of expertise. Thats why he hired Bonamego.

I am not in any way capable of determining if Bonamego is the cause of our ST lapses in kick coverage and I don't think anyone who posts here is either. One thing I DO KNOW is that special teams is just like other units of a fb team in that the longer they play together the more cohesive (and better) they get. So depth and cohesiveness are primary factors and it can't hurt to have a few really fast, athletic and tough flyers. We'll improve at that too. I'm happy with our teams overall progress up to this point and can't figure out how any Dolphin fan COULDN'T BE........

the dolphins are tied for third fewest in penalties with 42 (as a comparison, the top team has 80!). they have allowed 2 TDs on returns and a 95 yard kick-off return that actually didn't score!

yes penalties are very importnat, but they are not what's keeping the games close, it's the special teams that's hurting them! THAT's why, IMHO, everyone is harping on special teams so much!

and yes, London got blocked on that return, but what about the other 9 players on the unit?(I'm discounting the kicker)

All this being said, I'm extremely happy with the outcome so far! I expected between 3-5 wins this year! At the end of the game sunday, I actually had confidence that they could move the ball down the field and score a field goal... last year, I had no hope!

I agree wtih you on cassell, he HAS gotten better!

I remember us putting Troy Vincent to return kicks against the Steelers on a monday night, cuz we needed a boost from a guy who has done it before. Result....Torn ACL. Are we that deep at wideout , where putting Ginn there is a good idea??

Every team needs that Steve Tasker or Larry Izzo on their special teams. I remember Larry Izzo as a Dolphin rookie who was told early in his first training camp by Coach JJ that he already made the team. It had to do with his special team play and he's been doing it well for a long time.

Part of rebuilding this team is finding players like an Izzo who has an attitude of winning his matchups and making plays. If Izzo didn't have that, he would have a short-term career as a special teams scrub at the very best.

Some guys on a team may never be a starter or a major part of the rotation on offense or defense, but they make a difference on special teams.

I believe in Sparano's view on position flexibility and part of that flexibility is to play well on special teams. A lot of young guys on our team are playing special teams and have to show maturity by stepping up, playing smart, winning their matchups, and the bottom line, make plays.

If some of these guys consistently mess up, keep shaking up the roster until we get guys who will contribute on a consistent basis.

It will really hit the fan when it costs us a winnable game again like it did with the one point loss to the Texans after jumping them early.

The kickoff coverage is where the major problem lies. the other team is getting out to the 40 or more darn near every time. The punting unit has made some very nice take downs before the other guy can go anywhere, along with lots of fair catches or placing it out inside the 15, but then they let that one return get by them and its a whole new ballgame. You know what? I have to take my hat off to the Defense, cause with all that great field position we keep giving up after we make a FG its a wonder how we havent gotten blown out in all our games...GO PHINS!!!

They had him in punt return. Vincent was a dependable return guy dating to college. They ran him on some ill advised, poorly timed reverse which led to the injury. Let Bess return punts, and Ginn should handle every kickoff. Ginn, a former cornerback, should be a safety or gunner on coverage as well. At least take another look at Anthony Armstrong.
