All you have to do is come to Wisconsin any Friday night during the year for fish fries. Almost any corner bar, cafe or other restaurant has Friday niigt fish fries. Be sure to allow plenty of time. Many of them are very busy. It is quite traditional in Wisconsin to go out for fish on Friday nights. You can get walleye, perch, cod haddock, bluegills, etc.
Having moved from WI to MN, that was one of the biggest differences we noticed. The further east in Wisconsin you go the more common are the fish frys - all year. Door County down to Milwaukee was settled by a substantial Catholic population which kept the fish on Friday tradition. In fact, you'll even find some Italian, Mexican, and pizza places in Wisconsin adding a fish fry on Friday nights. The other difference is that while Cod is more common in MN, in eastern WI, you'll see Lake Perch on the menu. And something like catfish, fairly common in communities along the Mississippi River, is practically unheard of in eastern WI. It's kind of fun to see what people eat in different parts of the country.

Went to Deans last year. IT WAS AWFUL !!
Deans has been a great place for years, they have new owners and are trying to revamp the place. Meanwhile they are loosing the 'neighborhood friendliness and comfort'
I strongly disagree!! Deans was neglected and the new owners have BROUGHT BACK the neighborhood friendliness and comfort of a local tavern. All us locals love it, so maybe you should give it another try instead of bashing some place anonymously.

The South St. Paul VFW is great ... if you like incredibly long lines and the largest collection of obese slobs you'll ever see in one place. Honestly, it's a wonder the earth doesn't slip out of its orbit. Don't know if the smoking ban extends to VFWs, but the last time I was there you needed an oxygen to breathe. Yep, the food is decent, but blech!
Obese, drunk slobs !!

I ate there once. The food was mediocre at best. The pork chops were tough and cut with the grain. The cheesesteak sandwich had little steak in it. To top it off, while I was struggling to both push my mother's wheelchair out the door and hold the door open, two female employees were chatting with each other at the hostess area not 8 feet away and did not assist us with the door.

Worst experience ever at Deans on Rice. The beer was warm and flat. The fish took 40 minutes for the 2nd request. Never again!

I'll give it another try next Friday. We stopped by for a drink in early Dec. and vowed never to go back AWFUL SERVICE and DRINK (how can a run and coke be so awful!)(we live near and have occassioned Deans for the last 30 years) but we'd REALLY like them to improve and succeed. Not bashing them - but saying how it is.

I've had that experience to at Deans. Long wait to get an order. I've gone there at 10 AM for breakfast. Maybe 3 people in the place. Over 30 minute wait. Cook is busy, I was told. Huh, how can that be? There is only 3-4 people here...

Maybe they hired that drunk that holds up a sign, "will work for food"...

Today, I got the Cubs Belly Buster and brought it home. Was a 5 minute wait to get my order in. But that's not bad, compared to the over 45 minutes I had to wait to get to bad chili dogs at Deans...

If you enjoy good seafood, make sure it's safe for you to eat!

* Much of foreign supplied fish contains illegal and toxic substances.
* Due to overwhelming supplies, less than 1% of foreign supplied fish is able to be inspected by the FDA.
* Only locally raised (in this case, American farmed) fish is guaranteed to be properly regulated and safe for eating.
