This place is a bowel movement in the face of the area. I propose that that this gloried yard-sale venue be used for other purposes-after all, publice money helped construct it.

What crazy person from Abingdon put the LOVE sign on the front of the Heartwood building? It looked stupid to begin with and now just plain ridiculous! Tacky that's what it is..

I like the sign. I like the building because it is unusual. The people employed there are nice. The food is decent. I enjoy the artwork. You people are just too whiny.

I'm not whiny Thumper, I'm just stating my opinion. Still think it is stupid and Heartwood could have come up with something better than that. Love- who, what, when,where.Makes no sense.

LOVE was started by the Virginia Department of Tourism, it symbolizes "Virginia is for Lovers".

It is tough for the narrow minded to think analytically. When you see the word, what do you think, feel, ponder, remember,... Artists create things to evoke a reaction, be it positive or negative. Your like or dislike of an art object is due to manipulation by the artist.
The fact that you can be bitter and resentful to the word "LOVE" is quite hilarious and sad.

I think it's great for tourists to visit and get raped since you can buy the items they feature at local festivals for half what they ask at Heartwood. I wasn't impressed with the food when we ate there either.

I know what the word LOVED means stupid, I just think something else could have been put there instead of that word.It doesn't go with the building at all, maybe some kind of mountain art or something. The word love just don't fit right in the front of that building. Just looks out of place.

Ive been there once. The food in the resteraunt was okay, but at lunch they didn't serve the full menu as was advertised online and at the resteraunt. The pricing on merchandise is ridiculous. I understand the work that goes into it and I understand that all artisan centers are overpriced... But, WOW! I love Abingdon. Love the barter, like Allison's, and my boyfriend and his family live in town. I should probably give heartwood a second chance, but the first impression left a little to be desired.

I also agree that the building is an eyesore. Highly visible from I-81? Yes. But "A Rose by any other Name" hit the nail on the head with "gets attention from people DRIVING BY on 81." Without any insignia or advertisement for what the building is, who's gonna stop and look at it? The average joe traveler will probably think it's another part of the community college.
While I am not a fan of art/crafts, I do respect the trade. But let's face it, it's a dying breed and not an efficient investment to attempt to bring in tourists and their money. If any proof is needed that the crafts are losing their grip on the region just look at the Highlands Festival. It gets smaller and smaller every year, fewer quality vendors and has even been moved to a back alley behind the hardware/etc. Or the William King Regional Art Center. What used to be a thriving museum and social center is now a dilapidated old building that relies on the county office buildings held within it to keep the doors open.
The Creeper Trail and the A.T. pump several million dollars into the local economy. Having a place like Heartwood and the Barter add to that. The more there is to see the longer the people that come to the area stay the more money they spend. Tourism can't all be like Dollywood.
