Can this sauce be duplicated?

Production of our favorite spaghetti sauce ingredient, Spatini, was ceased in January by its longtime maker, Lawry's. It's been difficult to find a replacement.

My mother and I are devastated that spatini has been discontinued. We have used it for years for lasagna, and it s the only thing we use that really tastes good. Why did they discontinue the product?

PLEASE BRING BACK SPATINI! My sister got me to eat spaghetti by using this mix and we have been using it for over 35 years. It is the only kind I will eat! This is equivalent to Hunt's discontinuing tomato sauce.

I recently contacted Lawry's after receiving numerous requests from customers for Spatini. Here is their response.

The product you have contacted us about has been discontinued. We are sorry that we do not have any remaining stock, however we may suggest trying the Lawry's dry mix Original Style Spaghetti Sauce.

Our company's goal is to provide consumers with a variety of products to meet their needs and preferences. As you know, marketing is a complex function, and many business factors are taken into consideration before discontinuing a product. Before a product becomes available at the retail level, much time and expense is involved in perfecting the formulation, consumers focus testing, and marketing support. It truly saddens us when we must discontinue a product. However, consumer demand is a major factor. When the level of demand is insufficient to ensure that consumers receive high quality products at an affordable price, the product may be discontinued.

We apologize that this product is no longer available and hope you will continue to enjoy our products.

Thanks for your interest!
Your friends at Lawry's

Try this...
I did some googling and found this recipe for the Spatini Spaghetti Sauce Mix:

2 tablespoons Italian Seasoning
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon pepper
2 teaspoons seasoned salt (I presume by 'seasoned salt' they mean a salt like Morton Seasoned Salt.)

Mix all ingredients thoroughly and store in small airtight jar in a cool, dry place.

Quick Spaghetti with Meatsauce

1 lb ground beef, browned
1 bay leaf
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
12 oz. thin spaghetti, cooked
1-1/2 cups water
Grated parmesan cheese
1 large can of tomato puree
1 6 oz. can of tomato paste
2 tablespoon minced onions
1-1/2 tablespoons of Spatini Spaghetti Sauce Mix

Mix together all ingredients except spaghetti and cheese. Bring mixture to a boil. Cover and simmer for about 1/2 hour. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese.

Serve over hot spaghetti.

if you put MORE salt in that is no good--when they say season salt they mean season salt. not regular old morton's. since it is made by lawry's they probably mean their own season salt.

Everybody I know is discussing this product being discontinued and not one person is happy about it. It was a great seasoning for many dishes (not only sauces). I don't understand how the Lawry Co. says they try to meet the needs and preferences of the consumer, when you have soo many consumers trying to find it or petitioning it to be put back on the shelf.

I am so disappointed! I have made the BEST spaghetti sauce with Spatini for YEARS, and I was raised on it.... Spatini, plus fresh ingredients, plus red wine, makes the best spaghetti sauce, bar none, and I have been complimented for years on mine.
WHAT CAN WE DO?! I'll try the suggested duplication, but somehow I don't think it will compensate for the loss of our real product.
Please, if anyone hears about how to get hold of this product, or bring it back, let me know.
thanks!
Sue

I agree with one consumer. Raise the price, and we'll still buy it. I am very disappointed with Lawry's. My family has used Spatini for over 30 years, especially for making "Spatini Dogs", a great appetizer, and tradition for birthdays and parties.

My family has been using Spatini for years. It began with my grandmother and now the legacy has ended. I too went into a panic for months trying to figure out a replacement. I tried everything from celery salt to Old Bay. Nothing seemed to work until yesterday. I sweated 1 large yellow onion and 2 heads of garlic just until they were translucent. I then added 3 cans of crushed tomato, 1 can of of diced tomato, 1 can tomato paste, and a little water. Once that was boiling I added oregano, kosher salt, romano cheese, pepper, and soemthing called "Seasoned Salt". I usually use it on pork chops for my 7 year old but I had nothing left to try in my spice cabinet. I cooked it all day and let me tell you...my husband and son could not tell the difference. They thought I had found a box of Spatini in the cabinet. Good luck everyone! Maybe with all of the uproar they will bring it back.
