you need to talk more about if it is better for you

Organically raised vegetables are healthier than those grown under nonorganic practices that rely on chemicals for fertilization and weed, pest and disease control.

1 Since the USDA took possession of the word 'Oragnic', it now means nothing. Organic produce items (and the items on your page Erin) are not produced without synthetic pesticides ... it's just that they have had only 'approved' synthetic pesticides applied. In other words,'organic' items (and the items on your page Erin) are no different than the regular items one would buy, but have added intrinsic value (due to the mis-used word 'organic') and thus a higher price. Yes, I absolutely agree that organic food is better for us, because it is more nutritious and healthy. It can provide as a tool against obesity.

Yea, if it is 'organic food.' You do know that printing 'organic' on the label makes no difference of what is inside ... right? Les |

other than salt, all food is organic.

... all processed food contains synthetic ingredients. Tang is 100% synthetic. Les |

I read a report a few years ago (I think it was in Consumers' Report) that basically concluded that organics might be worth it regarding those fruits and vegetables that have porous skins (such as Tomatos) because with those the pesticides actually do seep into the part you eat.
But they didn't seem to think that it was worth it regarding fruits and vegetables with thicker skins (such as oranges). |

Even 'organic' labeled produce is coated with petro-chemicals ... it's just that they only use the 'approved' petro-chemicals. Did you know that there are about two dozen petroleum based pesticides that can be used on 'organic' fields/crops (according to the regulations?) See the scam here? Big food processors and grocery stores have written the organic rules. The only thing that has changed is that a small farmer cannot afford to grow/market produce with the 'organic' label. So, Dole and ConAgra will be the only source of organic food ... and if they can pass laws that require 'organic' labeling, small producers will find themselves totally out of the game. You get what you ask for, Les |

Yes! I believe organic food is better for you do to the fact; Organic foods are grown without the use of chemical fertilizer or pesticides and have not been processed using irradiation or added hormones.

100% "Chemical-free farming" is hard to believe especially when the United States continues to make DDT and use pesticides on a mass scale.
See the USDA's National Organic Program's requirements for certifying http://www.fmi.org/gr/USDA_OrganicProgram.pdf China has a fledgling organic industry, but as many know in recent news -- their standards are very lax. |

As an organic "newbie" I do feel that there are truths to both sides: yes organics are better but yes even they are treated with pesticides to some degree. I however, still prefer to buy organic foods and other products because of my children. After reading a book I found on organic baby products called "Healthy Baby Happy Home" I feel that it's better for my children to buy and give them organic foods and use organic/natural washes and soaps. It may all be a "hoax" but I am certainly enjoying the fact that I can actually read the ingredients listed on the organic/natural items I buy.

Les, I agree/disagree the large commercial food producers do get away with promoting food as organic that is not really organic, but as a small organic gardener basically just growing food for our own family we make our own natural pesticides, and plant border plants that help with insects and pests. There is also an organization I came across recently that offers people who are not gardeners the opportunity to have their own organic garden planted and maintained for them. They have a great concept and I believe they will do very well with it. you can check it out at http://myorganicacres.com/index.php... |

It seems like most of the results of studies promoting organic food are flawed and do not consider many variables that could be reflected in the results. Also, (and this is probably the most significant point), the functioning of the human body is carried out on the cellular level by very specific things called enzymes that require very specific things called substrates in order to do absolutely anything. It's just like a lock and key. It's incredibly complicated and is exactly why developing new drugs costs hundreds of millions of dollars. It's not like it's easy to figure out how to get something somewhere in a human body that is consumed through digestion. The digestive system has an incredible way of only extracting exactly what is needed from what is consumed. This is why people eliminate shit as waste. I'm a pre-med student so I'm not a doctor or anything but based on my education in organic and inorganic chemistry and biology so far, I can't help but think that synthetic pesticides are actually less likely to interfere with function because they are mainly inorganic molecules that would not mimic human cells at all. This is why there is a huge debate about whether or not synthetic supplements (the ones sold in the wellness section of whole foods- LOL) are even recognized by your body. This is why they are not approved by the FDA or even evaluated. Whereas some pesticides used in organic farming are just that, organic. Which means that they have a carbon based structure that immediately increases the odds of being more similar to something in the human body that may not be eliminated as waste. Anyway, its super complicated but basically I think the companies that market organic food as preventative or better than non-organic food are brilliant because they are making a ton of money off of something that's probably a load of crap or even causing health problems.

This is not accurate don't forget that the soil also observes the pesticides and that soil feeds all the vegetables, no matter what "skin" they have. Organic soil must be pesticide-clean for about 7 years. If you would like more information about organic care you can check out this free site: http://www.organic-care.info |
