The BC Fruit Growers' Association says approval of a GM apple could cause consumer backlash and harm the industry for conventional growers as well as potentially contaminate organic orchards.

If Health Canada allows this GMO apple into the country it will destroy apple growing as you know it. GMO contaminates organic crops that is a known fact. Once you have it, you can't get rid of it. Canadians should object strongly with their health dept to ban this or any GMO into Canada. It is the fertile area of BC that is a growing center for tender fruit, and has always been organic. Don't let Monsanto fool you, like they did to others. Ban GMO now.

I am very interested to hear more, GMO has been around for so long sure there are benefits but in this particular case what are the tradeoffs?

The only effect of possible pollen gene flow contamination would be some GM material inside the seeds of organic apples. Due to the already established buffer zones between conventional and organic orchards, along with the lack of testing of seed material, there is zero risk to organic growers from GM contamination.
